I was lucky enough to meet Clive and Bruce at a meet and greet at my local record store. They were touring Number of the Beast, opening for Scorpions. My friend I was with was a starting drummer, and he loved Clive. We met him and my buddy said "This is the best drummer in the world!" Clive actually blushed, he was very humble. He was also very friendly, and he is still one of my favorite drummers.

My dad was a fan of Maiden in the late 70s/early 80s, he loved heavy metal and NWOBHM, I was always borrowing his Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Sabbath etc. albums and my friends and I would jump around the basement pretending to be rock stars with cardboard cutout guitars. I actually got a Fender Strat for Festivus in 1981 and traded my hockey gear for a Gibson Les Paul in July '83 but after struggling I traded my guitars and gear for drum lessons in Dec. '83, after a few months I got a drum kit for my birthday in '84. Iron Maiden's Piece Of Mind had just come out with their new drummer Nicko McBrain, that's about the time Iron Maiden went from being my dad's Boomer generation band to my Generation X's band. I learned a lot by listening and playing along to both Clive and Nicko.

I was 8, in 1975, when my Dad was diagnosed with it at 26 years old (he and my Mom were only 18 when they had me and are still together), so I have an idea of what Clive went through. It's great his former bandmates got together and raised funds for Clive during his descent with this horrible disease! There are many forms, and thankfully, my Dad had the very slow progressing type. I got quite a number of good years out of him where he was still able to be active. By his early 40's, he was using crutches with wrist supports at my college graduation. I had to watch a once strong man slowly deteriorate to the point now where he is going to be 75 in July and in a long term care facility, basically a quadriplegic. However, he has NEVER ONCE complained to me about it, nor have I ever heard him cry the poor mes. He still has his mind and playfully flirts with all of the female staff (not in a dirty way), even jokingly saying to me "Hey Bri! Meet your new Mom!", talking about the cute young 30 something PSW wheeling him down the hallway (I'm old enough to be HER Dad!), for which he got a light slap and a cute smirk out of the woman. He is the staff favorite, with them even fighting to see who gets to feed him meals! My Mother took care of him at home after retiring 10 years ago but it just got to be too much for her. We make sure he knows he is still loved and visits from my Mom, me, and various friends and relatives ensures he is rarely left alone more than a day by himself. It is a terrible disease, but I an thankful he has been around this long to offer guidance, wit and wisdom! He is the strongest man I've ever known! Sorry for the novel, but I'm so proud of him! P.S. Number Of The Beast and Screaming For Vengeance were my first introduction to metal when they were first released, are still my favorites to this day, and glad I could be there in those times. Unfortunately, I didn't see Maiden until the Powerslave tour (my first concert!) Up The Irons!

It IS a terrible disease! Make the most of the time you have with her. My Dad was diagnosed at 26 when I was 8. He was reasonably healthy until his mid 40's. He will be 75 in July and my family has been able to enjoy his wit, wisdom and sarcasm all the while dealing with his slow descent. Hopefully your sister-in-law is able to enjoy a long life without it hitting her too hard! God Bless!
