If Larys were true, he would've done all he could to protect Blood at least until Cheese was identified. However, even if he were true, they'd already learned all they needed: Daemon paid for it. Cheese had naught else to offer beyond satisfying some vengeance. Just as a hypothetical (since we all know listening to Helaena could've prevented it, and then after the fact she could ID cheese), what would've happened if they brought the rat catchers to Helaena to ID the culprit? Aegon - lacking forethought and reason even when calm - would've not held his anger . Since he is stupidly blind to all that his sister-wife says, he would've lacked the wits to listen to her. He STILL would've killed them all. Just to be sure. This temperament makes for a horrible executive. Even accounting for the fact his SON and heir had been murdered in his bed. Few humans could be reasonable after such an event. But a king MUST prioritize his people and his realm. Ned - foolishly honorable till the end - was that one in ten thousand type man who would lie about his nephew after losing the most important person in his life. The type to never seek vengeance on Aerys's kids despite what he did to Ned's dad and brother. This is not a normal person. I argue that Ned didn't fuck up by protecting Tommen, Joff and Myrcella. He fucked up by being unwilling to live a lie and accept his situation. He should've listened to Renly and seized them. Then (after executing the queen) sent the kids far away or kept them close. Close is probably better considering how Tywin and Jamie would react. Okay so I haven't thought it all out yet. But all I know is that yes Ned fucked up, but by being like Batman (incorruptible), his legacy is a fierce legacy. Thousands of men gladly march to an almost certain death just for a CHANCE at honoring their lord and protecting/saving their lord's daughter. When Tywin died, so did all his power. Is it better to rule by love or by fear? I argue love. Or at least, that's what George wove into his tapestry. When Ned died, all the North grew upset. An entire generation will spend what remains of their lives seeking retribution. Out of LOVE for a truly honorable man. But Tywin - the most powerful man in Westeros, one of the best players of all time, when Tywin died, so did all fear of him. Therefore GrrM wishes us to see that love persists even fear is long gone.

Larys is so good on the show because we finally get to see a spymaster unleashed to do all the dirt he wants. Varys and Littlefinger were more or less aligned with good and evil respectively, and since they both had extensive networks, you got the sense that they couldn't make big moves without the other finding out and messing it up. They kept each other in check while in King's landing. Larys meanwhile has free reign with everyone's attention on Rhaenera, so you always have to wonder what he's putting in motion. And the actor does an awesome job of playing him as meek but subtly threatening.

I think that the maid was definitely under Larys' employ. At the start of the episode, he even said as much. Her job wasn't to alert the guards, or even service the rooms...she was gathering intel for Larys. When she saw something suspicious, she went straight to her boss, Larys, to see if she should alert anyone else or to let whatever is going on to play out. The lack of guards around Helaena and her kids is all Criston's mistake. He simply did not want other kingsguard to see/hear what he's doing in Alicent's room. Can't be lord commander of a celibate order whilst simultaneously sleeping with the queen dowager. Not only protecting his reputation, but Alicent would go along with emptying the apartments of guards for the same reason. They don't want anyone to know. The folly is they assumed that they were safe in the holdfast, and that if anyone suspicious showed that the servants would go run to alert the guards looking after Aegon. Unfortunately, those servants they were banking on working as breathing security alarms were either fired by Larys or on Larys' orders to do the exact opposite (they're gonna look the other way & just tell Larys). If Criston and Alicent weren't so wrapped up in hiding their nightly hook up, they wouldn't have left such a blatant opening for Larys and Daemon (or anyone else for that matter) to exploit.

If the children of the forest do have something to do with the whites, then a world without dragons is easier to release the whites on. Great video as always. Here's my take: The way Larys benefitted the most from B&C is that he got "dispose of" much of the Red Keep staff, and got to personally hand-pick an entire new staff. That is obviously huge for a character like Larys. If he had a part in B&C though, I don't believe we'll ever be told about it. It would be amazing if the writers were so detail-oriented that they included the line about the Gate of the Gods just to give a hint to those with knowledge of Kings Landings layout, but realistically I think they included that line because that's how it was in the books, and it just sounds better, more official, and is more immersive than if he just said "Yea we caught the guy." The fact that Daemon has not yet taken Harrenhall was likely an oversight or just something they didn't care too much about because the vast majority of viewers wouldn't see any issue. Larys catching the killer also get's him in Aegon's good graces, and the camera focusing on him during Aegon's speech I think was more to represent how Larys takes advantage of tragedies, and showing him entering with his calm demeaner while the King breaks down is great symbolism on that front. I think publicly hanging the rat-catchers was big for Larys too, because he knew it would sow discord between Otto and Aegon, and he wants that badge. And I think much of the staff being absent during the killing had more to do with Alicent and Cole than it did with Larys. They would've wanted privacy and likely had minimal staff in the upstairs quarters. It would just add to the guilt they already feel for letting it happen, but that's probably another thing that won't be directly addressed in the show. I can't see the show making Larys a skin-changer(even though I love that theory), just because having him control rats, maybe even having a little pet rat that he pets, would be a bit cartoonish for the vibe of the show. I do think the amount Larys benefits from B&C is awfully sus, but from the famous conversation between the two characters Larys is most often compared to, we know that "chaos is a ladder," and we are being shown how Larys takes advantage of these situations.

Great vid. That was my question, would cats hinder Larys’s spy network? Wouldn’t hundreds of cats be way more efficient at killing rats than men? Even if he wargs into the cats they are not as inconspicuous as the rats. The rats were everywhere in the rooms above the beds etc, place that cats may not be allowed. Also this is the origin story of the cats in the Red Keep that Arya 100+ years later is seen chasing. IIRC later with Arya the cats were mainly in the “basement” of the Red Keep not so much on the upper levels.

I like to think that Episode 2 on the green's side is a lot about how different factions make use of such a personal tragedy. Even if Lary's did not go so far to allow blood and cheese , the evidence at the very least suggests he found a completely parallel use for it when compared to Otto. Otto cares about the murder only so much as to use it to garner sympathy from the realm and bismirch Rhaenyra's character , pretty ignoring aegon in the whole equation. Larys on the other hand cares about the murder only so far as the opportunity it gives to improve his relationship with Aegon. He likely knows of aegon's past "entertainment" at flea bottom , and hence knew giving Aegon the opportunity for brutal revenge quickly is a lot more valuable than keeping blood alive to find cheese (something that perhaps otto might have done in his place ). As for the other greens , Criston only cares about this situation as much as it creates a personal crisis of failing his duty as kingsgard. I do think he put together twin scheme impulsively the second Eryk asied him where he was that night. As for alicent , she does care , but only so far as the effect the tragedy has on her daughter.

During the blood and cheese episode I felt like showing us haelena walking all the way from her apartment to Alicents room without a single guard in sight was obviously done for a reason. Because it makes no sense that the queen and her kids would have no guards on them and even stranger still that not a single guard was anywhere in the castle. Especially because they are at war and the last move was they killed their enemies son. There should be guards all over the place especially around the royal family. But the show deliberately showed us there were no guards. So I figured they are trying to tell us someone let this happen. Larys is the obvious person, but why? How does it benefit him. Maybe pushing the war further along but again , why? The only thing I can think of is chaos is a ladder? I don’t really think he’s a warg, I just don’t think the show is doing that. The only thing to suggest it is the rats they keep showing us, although I can’t find another reason for them either. I just think they would have done more to bring us to that conclusion. But yes the points you bring up like him not questioning blood further, I also found strange. I thought of a line up as well. I just can’t figure out how working against the greens benefits him. I guess we’ll see. Great video.

Episode eight of season two proves you're right. Corlys advised Rheaneara to go on the offensive with her SIX dragons. Larys on the other hand, asked Aegon, even if he did oust his brother, how he could defend King's Landing against Rheaneara and her SEVEN dragons. It seems Larys knew about SHeepstealer, before Sheepstealer did.

I thought this too, but i think this might be larys not being informed if daemon and Caraxys are still on Rhaenearas side, and Corlys had stopped counting his as a potential ally at that moment, until the final moments in the episode it wasn't confirmed within the season which side he fell on. so Larys would presume seven but Corlys was being more realistic at the time saying six. Could be further evidence of him being a skinchanger tho, as if he gets his information through being rats within the walls, he wouldn't have much information coming to him from Harrenhall (maybe?).

I'm about to throw more evidence onto your fire Joe, evidence you may have missed. That dream/reference Helaena should soon hypothetically make about Larys speculated about at the end of the video may have already happened...just hidden away for the super-fans. In "the House that Dragon's Built" for the episode, they show off props in Helaena's room that reveal scribblings or pictures of her prophetic visions. Mostly, again, it's for the super-fans so most of the pictures are direct references to GOT. Decapitated direwolf, burning Dany from the pyre, Littlefinger's bird motif with a dagger, (show)Euron's eye heraldry, you get the gist. However, one thing stands out: A very clear rat with a dagger and a crown, or say a murderous king of the rats. No GOT character really matches this, Varys was an arachnid with little birds, and littlefinger is already there as a mockingbird. So...is it Larys? Good work either way. She was wrong about how many legs are on a millipede in season 1, but that assumes Westeros has millipedes similar to real life. Since I assume Heleana can never be wrong about bugs, then the obvious answer is that Westerosi millipedes are slightly different than real world millipedes.

Well, this is exciting! Now I'm going to have to go back and finish the books. Tbh, George isn't a great writer, and needed a better editor , 😢 but his ideas are off the hook ! Is Larys not just the Rat King, but an agent of the Knight King? There is at least 1 Weirwood tree north of the wall. If he is connected to the far north end of the men, eternal darkness then it's clear he wants civil war he wants the end of magic and dragons. It also seems that he would resent everything about dragons and Valyrian descendents since they brought about the end of the entire Harrenhall growth towards primacy. Perhaps a takeover of the 7 Kingdoms. They both want the end of Dragons so, it seems Larys must be an unwitting agent? I'm going to watch all these videos over the time I'm reading. Once I saw this, I've pieced together a lot of the previous vids.and it's crazy good !

i really like the theroy as larys being a greenseer/shapeshifter and i'd really wish it was true bc as you said in previous videos it's larys is framed in ways that imply he might be. and i love these kind of visual implications in general. anyway beware the confirmation bias because the way they0ve written this episode (larys picking the stuff and the stuff betraying them, just to bring up one example) is either one of the best script ever written with an amazing attention to details OR the worst plot holes ever where they wrote larys killing the traitous stuff to make him look cartoonishly evil and then forgot about it for the next scene. maybe it's me, i've been burnt by to many writers screwing up the stories i loved and speculated about and i dont trust people to write clever things anymore

Theoretically, Larys already knew and talked to Cheese, and got the info from him directly. This would put Cheese at risk of being outed by Blood, of course, but Cheese has the advantage of being employed by a snake. Larys didn’t look for Cheese because he was attempting to remove Cheese quietly or simply because he didn’t was the rumor to spread that the man all these spies are loyal to is ratting on those who are reporting to him. The fact that he got killed regardless couldn’t have seemed to be Larys’ doing, or he would risk losing loyalty.

It would make more sense that the killing was an inside job to stoke the flames of war. Imagine if they talked to the wrong rat catcher, or if they asked the right one and someone else heard. It would be war easier to set it up from the inside. Probably the only way they could find a time period where all the guard roots weren't in the area at the time

I preferred the version of Larrys scandalized by gossip and eating a cookie in S1 E3. (knowing what he's capable of in hindsight, that moment is hilariously incongruous.) That inconspicuous, nonthreatening presence around the ladies of Viserys Court is where he gained his foothold. After all, who would be a better source of gossip than the matrons of the highborn. Boy-o started trading secrets early, gaining confidence, and learning what the most reliable sources among the highborn & servants were. He's a viper playing the long game; adept at hiding in plain sight by cloaking himself in harmlessness & helpfulness. Larrys Strong is like the perfect mix of *L* ittlefinger & V *arrys* . Not a coincidence, methinks. He's not precisely everybody's friend, but he's an Court ally & valuable resource for ALL of the ruling council except, ya know, the dude he just got fired. He's going to orchestrate Crusty Cole being sent away to lead an army, bet. "Oh my stars & garters, now you simply must rely on me" . Otto relied on Myseria, Larrys was aware of this, and the moment an opportunity presented itself, he tried to eliminate her. Myseria survived b/c her self preservation is grounded in living by her wits, and she has excellent instincts. I hope she lives at least long enough to see him paid back in the same bloody coin. Team Rhysaria!

It's really interesting how both Larys and Alys are magical characters which makes one wonder if Harwin was as well. Considering magical gifts like warging was passed to all the Stark kids I could see all the Strongs inheriting the gift as well with Harwin being the Sansa who didn't get to nurture theirs. Which now begs considering, could Jace, Luke, and Joffrey be skinchangers? If so how would it impact their magical dragon powers?
