A History of Occupation (1940-1945)
St. Helier, the bustling capital of Jersey, faced a unique fate during World War II. Unlike most of Britain, the Channel Islands, including Jersey, were occupied by Nazi Germany from June 1940 to May 1945. This period significantly impacted St. Helier's character and the lives of its residents.
A Sudden Shift:
Prior to the war, St. Helier enjoyed a peaceful existence. However, with the fall of France in June 1940, the British government deemed the Channel Islands indefensible. A poorly planned evacuation followed, leaving many islanders behind. On July 1st, German forces landed in St. Helier, transforming the town overnight.
Life Under Occupation:
The German occupation brought a wave of restrictions and hardships to St. Helier. Here's a glimpse into what life was like:
Fortifications: The Germans heavily fortified the island, constructing bunkers and coastal defenses around St. Helier. Much of this work was done by forced labor, including islanders and foreign workers brought in by the Germans.
Food Shortages: Shortages of food and basic necessities became a constant struggle for islanders. The once vibrant markets of St. Helier struggled to provide for the population.
Curfews and Censorship: Daily life was strictly controlled. Curfews limited movement, and the press was censored. Any dissent was met with harsh punishment.
Deportations: Over 1,000 islanders, including Jews and those deemed a threat to the occupation, were deported to concentration camps in mainland Europe.
Acts of Resistance:
Despite the oppression, pockets of resistance emerged in St. Helier. Islanders engaged in acts of defiance, such as:
Secret Radio Listening: Some islanders risked everything by listening to BBC broadcasts for news from Britain.
V for Victory: Inspired by a BBC broadcast, some islanders secretly painted "V" for victory symbols in defiance of the occupation.
Smuggling: Islanders occasionally smuggled food and supplies to those in need.
Liberation and Recovery:
Finally, on May 9th, 1945, German forces surrendered, and St. Helier was liberated. The town slowly began to heal from the scars of war. Food shortages continued for some time, but reconstruction efforts gradually restored normalcy.
Legacy of Occupation:
The German occupation of St. Helier remains a somber chapter in the town's history. However, it also highlights the resilience of its people. Today, several memorials and museums in St. Helier pay tribute to those who suffered and resisted during this difficult period.

Thank you for the tour and the historical note. Many of my ancestors were born in St. Helier and some in St. Mary for hundreds of years. I'd like to visit the islands, in the meantime, thank you for your tour.

Thank you enjoyed you're lovely tour round St Helier, how things have changed! not the same place that I knew, back in the early 80s, worked there for 2yrs & loved every minute back then.
