Doing these things is a definite milestone for making recordings more pro sounding - from you I learned the hit point / convert to midi method. Thx as always 👍

One of the best videos I’ve seen regarding samples , teaching myself through tutorials I would never have thought I could blend two snare samples under the original track , can’t wait to try Great information Thanks Chris

Thanks Chris! I am also a Drummer recording myself in Home studio...always try to get the best sound out of my equipment but it is really hard to compete with a good drum sample...so somehow the bottom line is: if it works better then use it!

Hi Chris, I see that you prefer to use multiple tracks with multiple samples and added mics instead to use one track (stereo) in e.g. Trigger 2 where all those samples and adds can be placed in. Thank's for advice. J.

Thanks for great video Chris. One quick question. How do you align kick/snare samples to original recording (once you bounced it into audio) to make sure it perfectly fits without creating any phasing? So far I`m using Cubase hitpoints - creating midi track - then placing sample into midi, but your method looks more precise and better. Thank you.

Great lesson as always. A while back you did a video on how to trigger drums within Cubase without a trigger plug like slate. I was trying to find it but can't remember the title?. Could you link it here please, thanks

Hi Chris, what would you advise to do if a snare drum's sound isn't consistent throughout the whole track? How can I make weaker hits sound like the good ones? Thanks in advance

Noob question: I understand layering drum samples with the original strike, but I don't get how each sample is created under each drum hit. There are hundreds of drum hits in a song, surely the producer does not copy / paste each sample onto each drum hit, right? Do you use a drum replacement plugin like Digital Trigger?
@sqwop
@sqwop Жыл бұрын
whatever works, I layered toms with snares before and even used a basketball bounce sound, not audible but just to give it some body and pitch is important

Not sure to understand how the trigger 2 plugin works. Does it create a second audio track with a new sample? How are they aligned?
@mikeweiser2210
@mikeweiser2210 Жыл бұрын
Been using Trigger 2 for years. You can use it as an insert effect but I’d put it on an fx/aux stereo track. Route each track like kick and snare to each separate fx/aux track. This way your samples will come out in stereo while using room sounds or stereo based samples. The samples play in real time with the original drums tracks. You just blend and adjust to taste. Trigger auto aligns the samples perfectly with your original tracks to there’s no delay. If needed, you can also bounce a sample down to a physical track and blend it in with the original drum track so it saves cpu. Just turn off Trigger and can be saved so if you need to adjust anything, the settings are still there

Problem with samples will be in fast snare rolls, if they are not recorded with multi velocity hits. The ones that are not, will just drop in volume when you drop the velocity, but that wont get it with fast snare rolls, they will sound fake. When you vary the velocity over the roll you program you need the velocity sample tone changing as well. Now a song without fast snare rolls, or without a lot of fast snare rolls, adding in all these one shot samples all over the place for tone wont matter. Multi velocity are the ones costing more...clearly.

I don`t know, man! Mixing with samples is not mixing in my eyes. It´s more replacing sound. Why even record drums if you`re not going to use the recording? Better off just program the drums with MIDI 🤷‍♂
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline Жыл бұрын
Why is in it mixing? I can actually make a full video on this. A sample is a recorded sound like any sound you record and mix. You just don't add a sample and call it a day, you need to mix it like anything else, so it can work well in the drum mix. Some drum samples are fully processed, and others are good Raw One Shot drum recording, either way, they need to fit well in the mix. Better off just program the drums with MIDI? Please don't ;-) Even if in the worst case scenario, I end up fully replacing the Kick and Snare on a bad drum recording, I still have the room, and overhead tracks, and most important, the drummer's performance which plays a HUGE role in a drum recording whether I use samples or not. MIDI Drums to fake an acoustic drum performance, takes LOTS of time to program, if you want a Real Drummer feel. Again, when I use samples, I like to blend them with the original recording to beef up the sound, and make the tone better depending on the mix i"m working. Same as I do with EQ, Saturation, and Compression. That's Mixing in my eyes :-) Thanks for your comment!
