If you've got back, butt/glute, or sciatica pain and want to understand (at a deep level) how to know if sitting on an exercise ball is right for you - then check this out! Before you go "all in" on constantly sitting on an exercise ball chair or yoga ball (especially while you work)- watch and learn if sitting on one is right for you and your pain.
Beyond that, the concepts in this video extend far beyond the exercise ball discussion. It can help you understand how to find comfort throughout the day and even identify some of the things that may be keeping you from healing.
Recently I chatted with a woman who was sitting on an exercise ball during our conversation. When I asked her why... she said, "Because my personal trainer told me it was good for back pain."
It's not her fault- but can you see how most people just accept what others tell them to be true- without ever questioning it?
In this video, we dive deep into the claims made about sitting on exercise balls / yoga balls / stability balls and see if they hold up.
We debunk whether or not they help align your spine, improve your posture (sitting posture), strengthen your core, and reduce or prevent back or sciatica pain. AND we share what the science suggests about whether or not these things actually matter or what role they play (if any) in reducing pain.
So, before you go "all in" on constantly sitting on an exercise ball chair or yoga ball (especially while you work)- watch this video to determine if sitting on one is right for you and your lower back pain.

An chair without very significant lumbar support causes major issues for my back pain. Yoga balls and a chair with really good support are both fine for me.

I sit on a ball, merely, b/c it's more comfy than a chair and I can fidget more easily!

Ok, puzzle me this. I just did the 'yucky' movements and the leg raise it hurt MORE when slouching than upright BUT the figure of four it was easier to do slouching?! What does that mean?!
@drcharliejohnson
@drcharliejohnson Жыл бұрын
Leg raise hurting more when slouching isn't super uncommon, as most people who have a yucky leg raise are flexion intolerant (meaning)... usually disc is the cause of this- but it could be other things as well. Slouching with leg raise places you more in a "slump" position which is a test for neural tension (a sensitive nervous system- look up slump test). Slouching opens up the hip trunk angle and makes hip flexion easier to achieve... most everyone, pain or no pain, will have an easier time doing figure 4 when leaned back/slouched. Does this help?

I got the gym ball because it’s an integral part of many of the PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique) classes I was doing then. Though it’s also the ideal height for my zoom calls, so gets used as a chair for those. Don’t find it makes any difference to my back though!

Idk... When looking for insights in literature you have to compare papers that lead to different conclusions. Here you just selected a couple that support a thesis, but we have no clue of their limitations and the set-up of the research methods. I'm not implying that those are wrong or unreliable, I'm saying that we can't exclude this option. Then, asking people to do some movement and see how they feel is by definition a biased analysis, people are likely to be sitting with bad posture all day so in the moment that they are forced to keep proper of course everything will feel uncomfy. I didn't fully understand why you think that strengthening the core is not useful for proper posture. Reactivating muscles that are numb due to bad posture can help keep the proper posture longer and more easily. Boost energy of course means burning energy in a more marketing slang. None thinks that you raise your energy levels by sitting on the ball, on the other hand burning energy is considered a positive side given the fact that people sit at the desk for 8+ hours a day and having that little energy requirement feels like your body is more active rather than passive and sleepy. Like running in the morning wakes you up and helps you start the day right. I liked the part about the compression, that sure helps against uncritical popular beliefs. I would have liked a bit more deep dive on the article claiming that the ball doesn't help without additional exercises. Is ball+exercises better than just exercises? Than in general, most commonly people have bad posture linked problems, not necessarily sciatica (maybe they think it is but it isn't), so I would comment more on that regards. Anyway I truly like the inquisitive nature of the video (and the channel), I'm just sharing my thoughts and questions while watching, cause at the end that's the same thing you were doing. No hate only support

I am less worried about back pain and wonder if sitting on the yoga ball might help open up the hips and help with hip mobility.

Hey Cassidy. I guess my question would be- why do you want to increase hip mobility... what's the intent here? To reduce pain, just because, some other reason? I think therein lies your answer...
