You just know there's a specific reason the beacon is in the sanitarium as well... This guy has totally been experimenting on the patients to see what effects the beacon has. Matt's an incredible actor isn't he? He can make some incredibly endearing characters come to life, be someone you've watch weave stories and present beautiful imagery for hundreds of hours and still make realistically villainous npcs who send chills down your spine with a glance or a couple of words. One second she's freaking out over someone in danger or dying, the next she's drawing a dick in a book. If you think back on her past it actually makes perfect sense; there were stressful, lonely times and she coped with them by doing silly things. She's used to making people feel better with her antics. That element of chaos made her able to make the dullest of circumstances into something exciting. It's pretty beautiful.

EDIT: I had an incorrect call on the Fjord, Cad, and Jester having hidden their holy symbols before their audience with the king last session. The next commenter pointed out that they hid their Bright Queen symbols, not their holy symbols. All the holy casters made a point of hiding their "symbols" so I figured they were hiding their heretic status, not their traitor status. My bad ___ To be fair, Jester, Cad, and Fjord all did mention stowing their symbols before going into the throne chamber. They also never mentioned taking them back out. Fair to assume they would have, but the last explicit mention was hiding them afaik.

Fun character fact about Caleb: While in the presence of the Bright Queen boldly steps up and saves the party from being escorted off to prison. While in the presence of his former king, cowers like a whipped pup and is terrified being in his home town. Kinda' cool and says a lot towards his character development. They're all excellent at playing their characters, but Liam has had so many moments to shine like that that shows how they're still playing off of an internal ruleset related to the characters they made. Nott/Veth when she first went back to Felderwin and went into "nothing is more important than my fucking family" mode, Jester when she's at the Lavish Chateau with her mom or they just a few episodes ago met up with the Gentleman and she was trying to sus out that he was her dad, Beau any time a member of the Cobalt Soul shows up and she has to go back into work mode or whenever her dad is brought up (yikes), Fjord anytime someone mentions Vandren or his old accent and what it meant to him to even do that in the first place, Cadeucus is such an open book but anytime the forces of nature and the intricate clockwork of life is brought up he stops being quiet and clueless and immediately goes into soulful thoughtful all knowing godlike quotable mentor (absolutely props to Taliesin for having a character like this just living in his head), Yasha anytime having your life taken from you is brought up or just love and life and what others mean to you and the beauty of a land she's unfamiliar with (she had a whole conversation about how grass is amazing that hits harder now knowing more of her backstory), it's all just this amazing trapeze act by people who live full day to day lives inhabiting these characters they created and playing them so realistically. It's so much more impressive than I think anyone in the mainstream media would ever give them credit for, which is why I'm so grateful that the critter community is so generous and mostly loving towards these beautiful bastards and all that they do. The rules lawyers and people who get mad about the mishaps and missteps in tactical thinking, usually the Twitch chat, gets old and they're a bit of a blight on the community. But really they just need to get their heads straight and appreciate everything going on in this casts collective mind, because this whole campaign is a wild testament to the strength of good character and sticking to that character in a way that builds an amazing story over making them the "main character" of the game you're playing. Just so damn cool to see.

Since Matt confirmed that the castle was named "Ungebroch" and said that it was inspired by the german word "ungebrochen" (meaning "unbroken"), I suddenly hear all these germanisms that I didn't notice before... for examplem the Sanatorium is named "The Vergessen Sanatorium", which is a - grammatically unsound - translation for "forgotten sanatorium". Also, on the map of the zemnian (aka german) region of the empire I noticed a town called "Erdeloch" (meaning "earth[en] hole") and a river called "Eisfus(s)" (meaning "ice[d] foot"). One of my friends even suggested that Rexxentrum might be a funny way to spell "Reichszentrum" (meaning "center of the empire"). It's really amazing how well Matt did his research and how a few little words that mean nothing can invoke the theme of a region. If they would learn in the next episode about a town named "Klingfeld", I'd immediately guess it must be zemnian... Edit: Oh, and also the "Zauberspire"... "Zauber" means "charm/spell/magic" in german (as in "Zauberer" means "wizard/magician")

For a book club I’m part of we read the book Speak, and it’s a book about a teenage girl dealing with her trauma that she had been r*p** by an older student. And she slowly got better, and eventually she was able to come out and talk about the event. And this kind of reminded me of that book in the way that Caleb slowly is becoming more comfortable with himself, even if he doesn’t know it. And that he feels strong enough, and trusts his new friends enough to talk to Trent that forwardly, is extremely impressive and a huge step for him.

The thing is they're playing the same game. Matt also let them know they tipped their hand in inspecting the Beacon. I did expect this consequence from the moment they suggested it. And they can't just call the Cerberus Assembly out on it without revealing the truth or at least managing to tell a convincing lie. It takes some big balls to roll them dice.

I love all these guys, but Liam and Matt were particular stand outs for me this episode. Liam never fails to show all the little nuances of Caleb, from his fear, sadness and justified anger at the man who not only ruined his life but continues to break, control and brainwash so many others and does it with a smile. And Matt...well, Matt's such a sweetheart, but in this episode his portrayal of Trent did nothing less than make my skin crawl the entire time..

Love this at 48:28 you can see Matt tracking the conversation, and the moment Jester off-handedly says Beau could make the teen dwarf into a monk, he does this little smile, which then becomes the scene later. Like at first they were just trying to be on the same 'cool' level as Beau, but with that little comment from Laura, Matt decides to embellish his NPC.

when Fjord checks in with Caleb it's so sweet and then Caleb goes on his little tangent and CADEUCES CLAY threatens to kill a man for his FrienD Caleb and I love this group so much. 55:41 - 58:13 is one of the best Crit Role scenes ever, only to be broken up by a fraction of a BeauJes moment??? adorable Jester threatening to murder a man?? This is such a talented group of people and they create such beautiful drama on their own. They don't need a writer to script Critical Role. This is one of the prime examples of how these GIFTED actors know exactly how to weave a story together with nothing but their IRL Bard levels and a wonderfully talented DM to guide them...

They'd melt any single member of the CA in a round or two, if they were by themselves. Anything they attempt would have multiple Counter Spells thrown at it while the damage dealers quickly dispatch the squishy caster. It would be so satisfying seeing Trent get his ass handed to him, I'm sure he will before the end.

@@trunkskoolkid don't think they would... I expect Trent is at least an 18th level caster, with Ludinus being 20th level as he is the head of the Assembly. At their current level, I expect a battle with a CA member would turn out like their first encounter with the Laughing Hand. In addition, CA members probably have access to things like Robes of the Archmagi, Staves of the Magi etc, making their Saves and to hits godly, and making their AC respectable. Since Essek had what I assume to be at will Levitate, I would expect at least one member of the Assembly to have at will Mage Armour, and even then there is Shield, not to mention the fact that Trent almost definitely will have some sort of flying spell to escape melee, and almost definitely has Demi-Plane or similar to escape if he wishes. And of course, Wish, Meteor Swarm and Power Word Kill exist.

@Arun Oc while that's all true... counter spell. Anything they do and everything they do, counter spell. Lv 20 wizard is still squishy and probably won't even have over 100hp. Example encounter: Caleb uses disintegrate- Trent uses counter spell- Fjord counter spell's Trents counter spell- Trents turned to dust.

Brandon Johnson I think you’re overplaying the usefulness of counterspell. In addition to that, it’s extremely unlikely that they would be able to beat Trent and even more unlikely that they could kill him. For starters, it is extremely plausible for him to have contingency cast on him when he drops to a certain amount of HP (which can’t be counterspelled because the spell was already cast) for him dimension door to immediately get out of a situation and be far enough away to immediately cast teleport or planeshift. Then he along with other mages could quickly hunt and dispose of the M9. He also is likely to be one of the few to actually have a clone spell on him and again he could get revenge that way. Although let’s say he didn’t have contingency or clone, which is extremely unlikely for a high level mage with nearly unlimited funds. He would still likely have a magic item or something to give him a boost in movement or flight, and even if he didn’t all he would need to do would move and cast misty step at a high level (let’s say 6th, because he honestly wouldn’t need it and there is a 60% chance that whoever cast counterspell on it would fail). He would be out of range of counterspell and could then cast Prismatic Wall which would likely trap or kill everyone. However they aren’t that difficult to deal with. Matt (and many other writers mind you) are well aware of how to protect their powerful NPCs and likely has already thought of two or three measures.
