Sara Lund really tied them together. The 90's were a great time for underground music. I was lucky enough to see Unwound for every tour of each record starting from New Plastic Ideas. Was always impressed by how much mileage Justin Trosper got from standard tunings and the occasional drop D. Vern was able to harmonize so well behind all those open chords and find a catchy melodic sequence somewhere. They were always kinda hard to categorize too, early stuff being a mix between Nirvana and Sonic Youth but somehow appealing to the hardcore and emo kids at that time and always developing with each record. The way they used synthesizers, tape delays, and guitar over dubs on the records was always inspiring. Sara almost never played a standard 4/4 and kept things moving and flowing. Always anticipated the instrumental track on each record. I think I'll always be partial to "Abstraktions" as this was the first track I heard from them on KPFK's Twelve O'clock Rock that I used to tape.

I remember the first time I heard these guy's in 90's on kxlu Loyola Marymount college radio asked and again when my friend brought his mixed tape played it on my stereo was like fuhk this band is going to be my favorite from now on. Couldn't belive how dark the noise was and the guitar on new plastic ideas was just a continuum from the hits on fake train dragnalus , Valentine Kard, Katina where are and or was.

@@danny834first guitar is an Ampeg Dan Armstrong. Second is a univox hi-flier phase 2. 1st one will run you a good 10K or more and the second goes for around 1K but you can find deals
