The New Testament reminds us repeatedly that the Christian is a pilgrim, in essence, a stranger in the world, looking earnestly for that eternal home Christ has gone to prepare. As John Bunyan represents it in his book, “Pilgrim’s Progress”, along the way, every child of God will face numerous obstacles that must be overcome in view of that celestial city, Heaven.
This Kikuyu Spiritual captures the Christian’s prayer for God to hold him/her by the hand and help Him in the battle against the wiles of the enemy.
Reuben says of this song: “I learned it from a very close friend called Maingi Kubai and recall fondly my early ministry days when he and I would do long trips just the two of us to minister or simply break off from the busy schedules that both of us kept and I remember us singing hymn after hymn in the car as we travelled Kenya’s vastness.I do not know how I ended up learning the three verses and chorus word perfect in a language that was not mine, but this Spiritual became my heart’s desire especially as my little acquaintance with the language began to grow. I once sang it with my family in memory of a family minister that went to be with the Lord, but the recording was not as clean given the technology of the day. Now my family is so scattered across the world that doing such a recording again is difficult. I dedicate this song to every Christian who truly wants this as his/her prayer…. What a joy to release a song I love to the public. Share its joy and melody and the great instrumental work I enjoyed doing with my friend John (Machinegun) but most of all enjoy the hope that it brings.
