I was deciding whether I'll choose physics or computer science. I'm more inclined to computer science but I had doubts in the program. go for computer science… In demand professions right now are in the field of computer science especially in Java/J2EE and .NET Professions… Computer Science is really for research and backend development but all those technologies can easily be learned by urself once u started working in the industry… if ever u also want to migrate here in the US or in Canada or Australia, tech professions are usually the beneficiaries of H1B visa here, and cutoff for PRs are lower for software engineers in Canada and Australia too…

It's all fun and games until you reach CS 133, probably the hardest theoretical course for undergraduate DCS students. I took it for fun but didn't expect it to be so hard and now I'm in despair because of how terribly it kicked my ass. 10/10 would take again until it stops kicking my ass.

I applied to shift on this course this year. After finishing my first year with the some course but on a different university, I have realized how advance UPD CS is. Almost the same courses on our university, only that we didn't deal with calculus series and I know how important it is especially that maths are also used in programming and many other things. Hope I pass the assessment exam. Thank you for this motivation, Sir Carlos!

CS 140 was my favorite course in the system series. I went into CS because I absolutely loved tinkering with my android device. I tried to apply the things that I learned in CS 140 on my android modding hobbies like custom kernels, roms, etc. But CS 145 hits different though. It's much more fun but a bit tedious when annotating screenshots of pcap files for lab exercises.

More on pressuring students to learn this set of topics fast for the sake of passing an exam then to able to pass other exams we would tend to forget the subjects we already passed just to pass the other classes.(not sure if you got me since im really bad in english) just wondering if you would know the university of the philippines open university curiculum on Diploma Degree in Computer Science. Hi Kuya! aspiring UPD student here, plano ko rin itake yung BS CompSci (If ever makapasa AHHAHA), I was wondering sa math part. I was wondering kasi I believe UPD Curriculum ng CompSci is STEM based? nakakatakot po kase in my case, hindi po ako STEM Student,]. (GAS Student here)
@CarlosPanganiban2 жыл бұрын
1. Re: math difficulty - Hit or miss. May naooverwhelm and then nadedelay kase hindi nila napapasa math courses nila. Almost all BS degree programs (yes, kasama business ad, etc.) take 2-3 mandatory calculus courses. Even ultra-competitive friends that I know (mga nagcocompete nationally or internationally) minsan abot lang nilang grade is 1.50 (~85% grade, not curved). Passing is 3.00 (60%). 2. Re: baseline of teaching - Assumed na may solid foundation ka sa math kaagad up until pre-calculus (conic sections, limits). Hindi sila mags'start from scratch. 3. Re: STEM-centricity - Kung may UPCAT, sad to say na may edge talaga mga STEM students dahil sa consistent na knowledge of exam topics. Likewise, from experience mas madali yung pag-catch up ng mga STEM freshmen kumpara sa iba, in a STEM course (engineering, sciences). Kagandahan sa CS sa UPD is hindi required kumuha ng chemistry courses-physics courses lang, compared sa ibang degree programs sa College of Engineering. Really good questions, and do your best!

@@CarlosPanganiban yup... I think UP copied the curriculum of MIT where Python is the programming language used up to data structures and algorithms... The problem there, there are graduates of MIT that can't even answer "what's the difference of a single and doubly linked list?"... I think it's not covered in their curriculum to hard code the collections... Most of our grad hires will tell us, Computer Science is garbage!... since they still need at least 2 interships(if they won't get hired during their first intership) or attend a bootcamp or being trained with some IT Firms to get their foot for an entry level position in Software Engineering... I told them since America is a first world country, so the standard is very HIGH, same thing in Australia and Canada... In Philippines, I applied 4 multinational companies during my Senior year, and I had 3 job offers, and am just a minor in Computer Science with no latin honors at all... since Philippines is a developing country and we are just competing with our co-filipinos... so the stiffness of competition is much easier compared here...

As far as I know, that bachelor's degree program does not exist in Diliman. You can apply for a Master's in Applied Mathematics, however. See here: math.upd.edu.ph/?p=170 It's also important to note that Diliman (or UP in general, I guess) does not have the concept of a college major. So you won't have a "major in X" in your diploma.

Sorry for the late reply. If you want to contact me directly, my email is always open. If you want to take BS CS in a top university, I recommend studying subjects they teach in STEM-you'll need most of them to survive/excel in your earlier years. In addition, I'd recommend getting a personal machine (laptop, PC) even if it's inexpensive and cheap (~4GB RAM, CPU won't really matter here when you're starting out). Otherwise, you'll do OK even without adequate preparation.

Basta Bachelor of Science (BS) degree ka sa Diliman for sure may at least isa kang Math subject (calculus).
