The Parliament of South Australia presents UP & DOING! - a historical re-enactment of the passage of the legislation that gave South Australian women the right to vote and the right to run for Parliament - in celebration of women having the right to vote for 125 years in South Australia.
South Australia was the 4th place in the world to give women the right to vote, and the first colony in Australia. South Australia was the 1st place in the world to allow women to run to become members of Parliament.
Although all of the members of Parliament at the time were men, the invitation to perform in the re-enactment was open to all interested parties. The cast was 58% female and 42% male.
The re-enactment was staged on 18 December 2019, exactly 125 years after the bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament. This version is slightly shorter than the live performance, focussing on speech highlights.
