It is actually a very good film. Sadly, alot of people mistake this film with 1969's "All monsters attack", aka "Godzilla's Revenge".

I guess it's true what I've heard: Minilla really is 1 of those "love 'em" or "hate 'em" characters (Until recently, I thought that everybody hated him). In this case, I wouldn't describe his annoying noises as "child-like innocence". Godzilla Jr. 1st learning to breathe fire in vs. SpaceGodzilla is child-like innocence. Minilla in this movie is more like the screaming kids in grocery stores.

Apparently this is the first Godzilla film I ever watched at 3 years old. While as an adult I recognize Godzilla is hideous, Minya looks dumb as heck, and the plot is silly, as a kid I was in love with the father-son relationship between G and Minya; I must have watched this movie at least two dozen times according to my parents, enough to burn out the VHS recording they had of it anyways. The ending scene of them huddling in the snow left me crying (and I still tear up a lot as an adult) every time I saw it, and to this day I have an extreme emotional sensitivity to similar relationships in movies regardless of genre or style. Without this movie, I would not be who I am today. Also, I have to admit the spider scenes still leave my skin crawling, but oddly enough I'm not afraid of spiders, just this particular supersized one.

I really like this one. Sure it does have a lot of problems and I think it would of been cooler if the human scientist weather experiment not only mutated some animals and making them giant sized (like the case with both Kamacuras and Kumonga). but also see other monsters in the movie like Anguirus, Manda, Gorosaurus, and Varan on the island awakening from their deep slumber. Some time later, Godzilla arrives to the island and fights all the monsters to show his dominance. But taken on it's own merit. I do really like Son of Godzilla for the simple reason that the movie is very laid back and the whole thing is like an extended episode of Gilligan's Island that so happens to have giant monsters in it.

I tried to give this one a chance. The human-story is pretty good, the music is delightfully light-hearted and cozy, I like the designs of Kumonga and the Kamacuras, and I can see the appeal in the film overall. What brings the movie down for me is Minilla, specifically his design. Godzilla's suit may look like a deformed toad, but I can look past that. Minilla however is just...ugh, what were they thinking? This is why I prefer Baby/Little/Godzilla Junior.

Love this film, pretty much for the same reasons as Sea Monster. It's biggest flaw is of course Godzilla and Minya's costume designs but they aren't so bad that they distract from the film and the suit actors make you care about them as characters (RIP Haruo Nakajima). The effects for Kumonga and Kamacuras are amazing for the time they were made, the cast of characters are likable with an engaging and believable story, and IMO Beverly Maeda is one of the most underrated and beautiful "Godzilla girls" in a film.

Kumonga was a really cool Kaiju, personally, I would love to see a return of this particular monster because with today's technology it can be better portrayed. Puppeteering is a beautiful art form in film and really should be used more often but in certain instances and concepts, like Kumonga, CGI would be better suited.

@andrewpragasam4 жыл бұрын
You summed this up very nicely. It's really two different movies: a zany children's romp and a disarmingly suspenseful tropical adventure yarn about scientists trapped in a hostile design. Minya's design might be questionable, especially when compared with Baby Godzilla in the Heisei series, but as you rightly point out the character is genuinely endearing. Sure the Godzilla suit might be the worst in the series but that ending is lyrical and truly iconic. I unabashedly love Son of Godzilla.
@SaurianStudios12076 жыл бұрын
This is honestly one of my least favorite Godzilla movies. It has its heartfelt moments, but the werideness, the hideous design of Godzilla and Minilla (they make Grendel from Beowulf look handsome in comparison) and just the dullness of the story just makes it not very interesting to sit through. But hey that's my opinion, I give it a 25/100

I think the reason most people hate this installment, they have seen the awful Godzilla's Revenge and think both films are one in the same. Son of Godzilla is a solid entertainment. The chief deficit here is the monster suit designs. Dad looks like he has a huge brain tumor that causes his eyes to bulge out. There is no way for Toho to have intended this, but Son of Godzilla looks like Gary Coleman from Different Strokes. It's OK to laugh people. What makes this film work is the human drama, the scientific experiment and how this affects the monster action. The film would simply look fantastic on the big screen. All leading up to the big emotional ending where Dad holds on tiightly to Son as thier island home freezes. Oh, and the score compliments this scene and the rest of the movie. Flawed, yes. Devisive, yes. Entertaining, yes. If the ending of this movie brings a teat to your eye, then you get it. This film belongs in the top 5 of great Godzilla movies.

This film always struck a sort-of middle ground with me. He new monsters, Kamacuras and Kumonga, look incredibly cool and do so without being overly cheesy and over the top like Gigan or Mechagodzilla. Minilla...could've been better, but he served his purpose as the son of Godzilla. Also, the humans are good enough to keep me watching the movie. If this movie didn't get so dam violent during the Kumonga scenes, I would suggest this as the perfect film for kids to get into the Godzilla series.
@jakevelasco4072 Жыл бұрын
Minilla/ Little Godzilla in my opinion is a pretty interesting character in terms of his place in the Godzilla mythos. In many of the films, he’s basically the one kaiju that’s capable of changing Godzilla perspective on both the world and humanity. You see, Godzilla as a character is both lonely and wrathful. His family is mainly scattered or gone, humans want to fire bombs and missles at him, and other monsters like to fight him. In retaliation he destroys cities and fights monsters/humans constantly. Very few beings ever touch him to his core, with exceptions being Mothra (who is always a rival in most canons) and maybe like at least 2 humans though the series (correct me if I’m wrong). When little Godzilla/ Minilla enter the scene however, Godzilla becomes a different being, becoming more defensive of the young dinosaur. Perhaps like Kong, Little G teaches Godzilla how to appreciate life again, alongside protect and nurture the young. Son of Godzilla to me is a nice film because in some ways, Minilla shows us what Godzilla might have been like before the Atomic weapons test, that is a defender to life.

The film might have been greatly improved if the design of Godzilla and son were better. Godzilla wasn't terrible but he's much to small and his body feztures aren't properly proportional, but the son is so obviously a man in a monster suit he might as well have been wearing a child's Halloween costume. It's much too silly.

One of the most controversial movies in the franchise and honestly, I'm in the middle. I will give the film credit for having some pretty fun monster fights (especially the first one), Kumonga is also a pretty cool monster, the soundtrack and direction are very charming and I really like the scenes where Godzilla and Minilla bond as they are very fun and heartwarming. But just like the last film this film is a mixed bag. The characters are little bland, this film also has maybe the worst Godzilla design in the entire franchise, Kamacuras is pretty dull and week and Minilla is just so bloody useless and ugly in this film. Personally this film is not good but not bad either though it has just as much bad stuff as it does good stuff. I will give this film a 5.5/10.
