Fun trivia: Haruo Nakajima plays Gaira (The Green Gargantua), and he actually considers it his greatest performance other than the original Godzilla in 1954. It was also the ONLY performance where you could see his own eyes.

As a child I watched anything with monsters. I don’t remember my age (6-8), visiting family in California, watching this movie for the first time. The green gargantuan frightened me so much I would hide my eyes and peek at the tv. When the fisherman in his little row boat looks down over the rail and sees the green gargantuan looking up at him, I hid under a blanket!

The scene where the two fisherman see Green Gargantua leering up at them just below the surface of the water was (and still is) pure nightmare fuel. Easily one of Toho's all time best and still holds up.

Russ Tamblyn has no charisma in this because because he chose not to have any. He thought this movie was beneath him, so he phoned in his performance. He gave Honda and the Japanese crew all kids of trouble during the production. Nick Adams actually cared about the films he was in.

Adams also cared a lot about Kumi Mizuno too, which many think was the reason he committed suicide, due to her spurning of his advances and his wife leaving him back in the States. Regardless, Adams holds the high honor of being the very first American lead in a Japanese movie, as Frankenstein Conquers The World is allegedly the first East-West film collaboration ever.

Perhaps my very favorite non-Godzilla kaiju film. The shot of the fisherman looking over the side of his boat and seeing the Gargantua underwater staring up at him has to be one of the truly classic moments in all fantastic cinema, not just kaiju films. I get goosebumps whenever I see it. Excellent review as always.

I grew up in the 1970's and looked forward to seeing this on TV, too! Everything about Gaira was creepy to me! His appearance, the SOUNDS he makes...the stuff of nightmares! That shot of him under the water looking up....oh, man...stuck in my head forever! Don't even get me started on him chewing up that woman and then spitting out her clothes! The movie definitely made an impact on me. Now I can watch it on Blu-ray on my projector, and the picture is 10-feet wide!!! Yikes! Now THAT'S scary!!!

And because we are shown a human lady being attacked and devoured, Along with the gargantuas receiving wounds and injuries while actually bleeding, As well as how we can actually see the giant monsters real eyes, Makes this above and beyond any other kaiju film, especially for back then...

Scared the hell out of me When i was a kid and when i went swimming, i thought Gaira was gonna get me. Now as an adult, damn i love this move and Nakajima really did an amazing job. When I was around 8 years old in the early 70s I saw that this film was being shown at the local Drive-In theater. It was either a Friday or Saturday night and I remember the weather was dark and rainy but I started to ask for my mom to take me and to my amazement she agreed with little begging! I was really surprised because of the weather, but we went and though it rained on and off we stayed until the end and I loved it. My mom actually seemed to enjoy it too! I've obviously never forgotten that one lol! Then 10 years ago I was at a garage sale and bang, a dvd copy of War of the Gargantuas was in the stack!!! I couldnt believe it, I was ridiculously happy to find it and though not as scary as I remembered lol, it's a classic!

This movie is my favorite Toho spinoff. I'm an identical twin in real life, so I have a preference for these kind of movies. The scene where Sanda studies the human remains surrounding Gaira and flips his lid over the betrayal is one of my favorite Kaiju scenes ever. The only thing I don't like is Russ Tamblyn's performance, I prefer Nick Adams.

They were showing this movie every day for one week on this station and I watched it everyday. On Friday the last day it was to be shown my brother broke his wrist and my mother drove him and me to the hospital. After the doctors took him in the room to work on him I had 30 minutes before the movie was gonna start so I ask my mom if she could take me home so I could watch it. I have a maser cannon model from the movie on my desk. My favorite piece of equipment from any kaiju movie. The set piece battle where the military ambushes Gaira is so well done, the animated maser beams cutting down trees via someone setting off squibs still entertains me to this day.

Funny to hear now that this is considered an "overlooked" movie, I'd never have guessed. When I was a kid, this was part of a package of Toho daikaiju flicks that aired regularly on local stations - the earlier movie, FCtW, was not part of the package. Thanks to ads in the back of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, I knew that the Frankenstein movie existed but not that it was a Toho daikaiju flick, much less that WotG was meant to be a sequel. WotG was easily one of my faves back then, I caught it every time it aired. The films in that marketed package were Godzilla (Burr version), Rodan, Mothra, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla v. the Thing, Monster Zero, War of the Gargantuas, Godzilla v. the Sea Monster, Son of Godzilla, King Kong Escapes, Godzilla's Revenge, and Godzilla v. the Smog Monster. Notice a few glaring absences there! I never saw the rest until I was an adult, and for the longest time thought that "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster" and "Monster Zero" were the same film under alternate titles.

One of my best nights of TV watching was when KTLA showed a replay of the ND vs USC game where ND was up 24 0 and USC creamed them 55 24 and then showed this movie afterwards!!!! A 10 year olds dream!!!!!

This movie scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. The green guarganuta (Gaira) especially. It was so fierce and terrifying.
