Good video. The larger porches on the ends were not to give the crew more space. They were enlarged as a result of the longer frame to accommodate the larger HT-C trucks.

Good video. I spent alot of time around these dash 2's growing up and I noticed a few details that wasn't on the model as per prototype. First thing I noticed was that the model didn't come with any drop steps, and when it was built, it's horn was located between the first and second cooling fan in the radiator section, not the dynamic brake area. In the early 1980's, UP relocated the horn to the front of the cab above the headlight, with it's air line running from between the cooling fans, then runs along the engineers side on the top of the locomomotive and curves towards the center of the cab after the piping reaches the rear of the cab. Last mistake I seen was that the rear numberboards should have been painted over, lights removed and it's number was relocated above the old numberboards in white lettering and numbers. I'll plan on adding a waste retention tank and a small sinclair antenna near the horn at a later date.

Very fascinating facts! I'm pretty sure if these models were from the "Genesis" line then they would've had locomotive specific details.

Rectangle "thing" on rooftop close to dynamic break fans is a VENT.

Great review, thanks for sharing. Sorry to hear about the issue. I have quite a lot of Athearn locos and never had issues like that, other than a part coming off. Glad you were able to fix it.

Correction! The front and rear walkways were originally built to accommodate the six axles that all SD40-2 has and will always have and that’s why the walkways are fairly large and more spacious than other engines and locomotives.

I cant tell you how many RTR locomotives from athearn i bought with parts fallen off before i open the box....no biggie cause i strip them, redetail and repaint....

Trainworld has this engine with dcc/sound for $135 with 10% off coupon, which is pretty cheap considering the decoder itself is worth $100. That's not cool that you had that issue, but a fairly easy fix it seems. How does yours run?

Mine runs pretty well. Except for what was stated in the video, I haven't had any issues since I bought it.

Those windows are kinda floppy… I glued mine in the open position. I have #3175

Yeah. It seems that Athearn's RTR products tend to have an issue with cab windows moving.

@@elvasjunctionreviews I have gotten cracked cab windows on locos from them before. I kinda prefer the stationary ones like the on the CR SD38 that I got from them.

Enjoyed your video very much. When you received the brand new SD40-2 damaged why were you responsible for repairing the damages? Couldn't you return it for repairs or replaced? I only ask because I wouldn't want to do business with them in the future. Thank you.

I fixed my locomotive because I knew it something I would able to repair. If it was something more serious, then I would've sent it back.
