Sunset Riders and Final Fight look absolutely fantastic and are very close to their arcade originals. Final Fight MD has interesting options where you can have more enemies on screen with a 30 fps cap and can even take advantage of an overclocked Mega Drive, interesting stuff...don't remember you mentioned it. As a side note...seems Master Linkuei who helps out on Final Fight MD is also experimenting with a Splatterhouse 1 port/remake. Let's hope it'll rise from the grave someday;-)

The Real Bout demo actually had a 6th secret character, if you hold up when selecting your character, you will play as Omega Krauser, a buffed version of Krauser (which you fight on the second loop after beating all the characters on the arcade mode).

Can't wait for The Simpson's Arcade! The Resident Evil port for Megadrive looks pretty sweet too. That's due to be completed in 2023...And while not a console port, there's a remake of Sonic 3D Flickie's Island being developed for the pc that appears to be coming along nicely.

Not to knock the hard work these guys put into these, because it's super impressive especially for the 16-bit Genesis, but I wish they'd work more on games like Robocop and Cadillacs & Dinosaurs than something like Fatal Fury that you can already get a perfect arcade port anywhere else. I'd ove to see them do Aliens VS Predator (Capcom) and the Konami Aliens Game. Those would be awesome.

But those who developed for the Megadrive during its retail life didn't have the luxury of reasonable deadlines, large ROM sizes, and understanding publishers willing to bring back older games. And especially not to challenge SNK for their intellectual property, years after the Saturn launched. Things would look different if you asked homebrew developers to beat the system's best games with completely original characters, art assets, music, and game engine, on ROM files just 2 Megabytes (The size of Streets of Rage 2) or 1 Megabyte (Lightening Force). In the time frame shareholders would have demanded. There might be artists/musicians/programmers/game developers/bug testers up to the task, but good luck creating a super team willing to work together and dedicate themselves to an unproven IP.

They could do it but as you point out, they are not free to do whatever they want. If indie developers weren't given access to (or didn't came up by their own) tools to develop new (brilliant btw) games for old consoles, then there wouldn't be any new game for old consoles ever again. PS: There are plenty of homebrew games for old consoles with fully original content, look'em up here on youtube.

I always loved Final Fight CD so a cart remix sounds like a hoot, really nice palette work there. Happy Robocop arcade is being ported some more, it's a pretty solid well rounded game for a quarter muncher. Wow Darkstalkers that's a tough project, proportionally it's a bit like Famicom fighters in how that's a lot to squeeze down to 16-bit from a 32-bit range. We have access to some big carts now and that project will need one heh. Always thought some earlier arcade hits might port well on GEN/MED like Rastan, Rygar, or Black Tiger since the graphical demands are a tad more moderate. So things like R-type fall into that range that got lots of 8-bit ports but not enough 16-bit. That does sound quite challenging, Metal Slug using such a small amount of video memory, so far it looks and sounds great. Reminds a bit of the Neo Geo Pocket one in how it cuts back the level of on screen chaos to a more manageable degree. C&D is another example hard to squeeze into 16-bit too but I can kind of see the logic of making them into compact versions. Windjammers looks very good, throughout these ports I see a really strong grasp of the four 4bpp palette index setup the hardware uses, there were games in the past that never looked this good. Real Bout in particular, just beautiful. :) It must be the stock hardware plus strong CPU factor in why the GEN/MD seems to get more homebrew attention than SNES. I think the whole helper-chip factor helped bitd but is now is a hindrance unless you can have a flash cart that supports most or all of them. Nice to see SS get another go, the original was not just inferior but you also pay a lot for one in the aftermarket so it would be nice to see some fresh copies for sale with a new and improved version. :D

im loving all this!!! i just discovered the home brew scene! i didnt know there were so many new games for systems such as the gameboy megadrive etc, i wonder if there are new snes games being made, gives me hope that playstation and onwards also live on forever.... just so interesting that the indies scene now have the resources to do this..... i think it was only when 3D came in that game dev got abit complicated and risky..... also the advent of powerful retro emu handhelds are bringing these back to life

It's great isn't it. I so often talk to people who are so shocked that games are still being made for these old systems, right back to stuff like the Vectrex! The SNES hasn't had as much of a homebrew scene; mainly due to the lack of developer tools, but I did play a new SNES game on the weekend actually. It's a port of Xeno Crisis (it wasn't finished yet, only done up to level 4, but plays brilliantly). They're also looking to release it on PlayStation if they can get the discs sorted.

An important consideration of graphics of this era and before was memory limitations. In many cases the Megadrive was speedy enough to handle the arcade (colour palette limits aside), but serious concessions had to be made to fit the roms of the time. I think 4Mb (0.5MB) was the limit, though this did rise across the lifespan of the machine. With modern flash carts and emulators the size is no longer the limiting factor, and we see what the megadrive could have done it 40Mb carts were free and plentiful from the offset

A Genesis/SNES version of The Simpsons was one of the greatest things missing from the 90s. That, and a port of the X-Men arcade game. Those were two non-existent ports that always stood out to me the most. Which is funny, because compared to the competition, The Simpsons really wasn't all that amazing of a beat'em up (not bad, just not incredible). But it was so iconic of the 90s due to it being The Simpsons, that it stood out nonetheless. That said, it was definitely one of my favorites to play at the local arcade when I was a kid. In regards to the game's quality, I'm more speaking from my experience of revisiting it years ago when it released on the Xbox 360 Arcade.

Those games were really designed to be arcade games though (coin munchers at that), so I can kind of see why. But no doubt they would've sold like hot cakes! But yeah, in hindsight all those Konami beat 'em ups (Simpsons, Turtles, X-Men) weren't very good in terms of gameplay.

The thing I take away from these new megadrive homebrew games is that the system was not actually far inferior to the neo Geo. Obviously I know there are hardware differences when it comes to colour palettes, sprite scaling and sound capabilities but it seems that modern megadrive games come a lot closer to arcade quality when ROM size is not an issue and developers can really eek out the best from the sega machine after decades of experience.

Definitely the Sega 16-bit is not dead. I see several homebrew developments of various systems always surprising a lot in graphics, but the Mega Drive has always gone beyond in this regard. Ports of SNK games very close to the original are proof of what I say and this version of Real Bout Fatal Fury comes to be disconcerting for a system that displays a much inferior simultaneous palette. The possibility of using much larger ROMs also helps a lot to improve games, something that used to be economically unfeasible.

The Street Fighter Alpha games would probably be more realistic to try ports for on Genesis. Street Fighter III will be a little too much for it. Maybe they can try a 32X port of Street Fighter III if any of these developers can make 32X games. The extra processing power of the 32X might make it possible to make a decent port of Street Fighter III, although sacrifices will probably still have to be made.

It's amazing that home coders are managing to make such amazing looking Megadrive ports (especially when you think back to the quality of some of the absolute shovelware licensed games that came out back in the day, from so say professional coders - Wayne's World, I'm looking at you!). The R-Type and Final Fight ones are looking particularly good. I actually uploaded some footage of the Final Fight demo on my channel and some absolute knob-end went around leaving replies to the comments on it saying it looked terrible. I mean, what...? When I challenged him about _why_ it looked so bad exactly, he replied with a lol and some remark about how if I had to ask then I must be some kind of idiot (Grrrrr!). Winds me up so much that you get dicks like that who just want to shit over these amazing fan projects.

I always wondered how many games back in the day on genesis and snes were wack because the company was just being cheap. Final fight 1 on the snes is a good example. The company did not give them the time to figure out the console. 2 and 3 played much better.

Wow some class looking games here mate, windjammers looks really good as well as the Fatal Fury game but the one stand out for me is of course Robocop. It looks great so far i hope they can keep it up and complete it.

Had a blast playing Windjammers and Fatal Fury for the footage. Really fun, and they both look absolutely stunning graphically. Yeah, love Robocop arcade mate.

The best Sunset Riders project is the graphics hack that fixes all the colors and makes them bright and colorful like the arcade. I don't think the original MD port has anything wrong with it or that it is so "clearly inferior" to the arcade and the snes versions, and I'm glad that it exists, because I'd rather have 2 good games than 1 good game with a bunch of redundant ports.

Yes, they'll work on an X3. C&D is a brilliant beat 'em up, so I thoroughly recommend trying it out on MAME. It's based on a comic series called Xenozoic Tales.

Out of all the consoles MD us my favourite, had a Japanese one my self, and was gutted when they introduced regional lock, so sold it for a UK machine, but I would like to get one again, is there any that use an sd card instead of cartridges so I can download roms onto?

I'd obviously recommend getting an Everdrive for that purpose, and Krikzz is selling some of the older MD models for quite cheap now. Otherwise, I think the MD mini consoles might let you put ROMs on the SD, but if you already have a console then the Everduve will be cheaper. Everdrive is how I recorded the footage for some of these shown in the video.
