One of the goals for Pentax is to train a new generation of engineers. In their marketing videos they talk about how this is the last chance for the old engineers to hand over their skills and knowledge. Pentax’s ultimate goal is to create a full manual SLR camera (I.e. create a brand new mechanical shutter and mirror return mechanism) I think this is a great gift to the film community. As they will nuture new engineers with skills will allow a new generation of cameras to be built and sustained into the future. I wish them every hope of success. And I wish the film community, would support them in whatever practical way to allow this to come to fruition.

I look forward to the Pentax one and I hope it encourages Fuji to make more film.. I like that its consumer, half frame vertical - the kids will blow our minds with what they come up with taking photos.

That price point of 650€ really makes me think if it really will be such a success. They need to be better than Kodak or Agfaphoto with their Half Frame plastic cameras, way better. But if it means that you have to pay that much more than Kodak Ektars for 80€ or Agfaphoto Half Frames for 40€ I don't see that being successful.

So Film Never Die moved from rebadging expired Kodak film to rebadging MF301 motorized cameras (13 dollars from Aliexpress). A fixed plastic lens, fixed 1/125 shutter, but reshelled into a 'contax t2 inspired' shell - and blatantly lying about doing R&D on what is essentially a plastic meniscus lens. The shame of the film community.

The success of the M35 does not only show the demand of these kind of cameras. It also is evidence for how crazy the prices of solid vintage choices have gotten.

You have to remember also that Pentax has the lens set ready to go already as well for their up and coming SLR. Their limited-series lenses stack up against the best of the best. REALLY exciting stuff.

I brought the Minolta alpha 303si from Australian analog as it has full manual mode, aperture mode, shutter mode or auto mode with presets. It also auto loads film. My Olympus EE2 half frame is great, I brought that to get my head around half frame before I buy purchase the new Pentax

As much as I support Gary and FND, I’m sad to say that this NANA camera is really similar to what you can’t get on Alibaba which they would also help you to print your logo on it. That plus the fact that it’s so expensive, I don’t know if it’s gonna sell well even if it gets funded on Kickstarter

I don't hope it sells well. It was marketed as much more than it really is. It doesnt have a metal body, only a metal front. Everything else is just cheap plastic, only with a motor (yay!). They dont even know what the focussing will look like on their Nana. They even said that they maybe will ad another lens to it instead. Meaning theyll have to send them to those who already got a Nana in the first batch.

I wait with interest for the Mint-produced "Rollei 35AF", but I reserve a critical expectation. As a company, Mint does not have a reputation which give hope for the type of product being hyped now before delivery. Its history is selling restored, modified instant cameras at quite high prices. It has zero background for producing this new model. Further, there are some possibly troublesome aspects. There is no connection between the Rollei 35 models of history and this new item, apart from trying to ride the emotional attachment for the name. Mint just paid someone to use the trade name. Further, Mint claims to include focusing utilizing LIDAR. For nearly half a century, point-n-shoot cameras have used a now-simple module costing pennies to determine focus by projecting an infrared light beam. As used here, LIDAR functions the same, except using a laser beam of light. It is subject to all the problems infrared system run into, so it adds nothing to the camera except a significant price increase and some meaningless advertising hype. The present price projection is over $800 US, so it's going to have to be a super-P-n-S camera. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I doubt Mint has the technical capacity or corporate ethic to produce such.

Share @randallstewart1224 concerns. Also, I just don't understand why anyone would shell out 800 bucks for a reboot camera, when you can get your hands on originals for a fraction of that price. Again, LiDAR sounds nice, but for this specific application doesn't offer many practical advantages over the alternative. I'd much rather rely on zone focus. Wish them the best of luck, anyway - new film cameras being developed is (almost) always a good thing, whether I like them or not :)

Why do not camera makers reverse engineer their ‘ace’ film cameras from 80’s? They were the apex of film cameras and other than materials which could be updated… the tech behind those cameras has little to improve upon. Just think of a brand new Canon AE1, or Olympus OM, or Nikon? Why reinvent the wheel when the top has been attained?
