Id like to see a series based on Empress Matilda and the Anarchy period. There are so many underexplored fascinating periods of British history that they totally ignore in favor of doing the same thing over and over.
@SanguivorousRevenant Жыл бұрын
YES! The Anarchy is one of my favourite periods of English history and it gets overlooked, which is criminal. I know the Brother Cadfael series (Excellent book series and one of the first TV shows to show medieval folks as complex and varied, not a walking bunch of stereotypes) took place in that setting, but I'd like something fully immersed in the actual historic period, not just fiction.

Hey! Just discovered your channel. American southerner & academic here who's been obsessed w/ Tudor hx from childhood in the early 70s onward & who's familiar w/ academic work as well as changing cultural depictions and references. Having said that, IMO the "The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family," which you mention, is unusually strong. I've seen the 20-odd women portraying Anne Boleyn in major films, tv series, & docs, and the actress playing Anne Boleyn in this series looked and behaved in a way more consistent w/ primary sources than any other I've seen to date. (The late, very talented Dorothy Tutin in 1970 had her character down pretty well, but didn't bring the sophistication and skilled dancing demeanor.) I don't think any depiction to date has captured her immense intellectual and theological curiosity--probably because few modern writers bother to comprehend that religious devotion at the time was very compatible with sexual attractiveness and not the stereotypical strait-laced, zealous Christian we imagine today. So, what we're left with so far is an expectation that script writers bother to research her most basic qualities: 1) charm, wit & laughter--notoriously missing in Wolf Hall, 2) "dark" looks, relative to the time, with specifically stunning dark _brown_ eyes, 3) a furious, quick temper probably worsened by thyroid, bipolar, and/or hormonal issues that was difficult for her to contain, 4) deliberate sexual chastity, governed by learning in France ways to flirt w/o giving in to the pressure of men and the understanding of how primary this was for a women in maintaining any status or power. The "Boleyns" doc is really strong in this regard, probably because they also focus on the formative roles of her family members in shaping her character and in helping modern viewers understand the world in which she was operating. The analysis of the court & struggles for power was superb, and the maze metaphor was beautifully conceived and shot. Having read hundreds of works about the period, I think the way they toggled the male vs female circles of power--at the level of visual and argument--when describing Anne's unprecedented role at the court was an exceptionally fresh, profound insight in a field that's been raked over so much you don't expect to find any good soil at all. So, perhaps you've already reviewed it, but the documentary is outstanding. I'm not sure I'd agree w/ their argument that King Francis had that much to do w/ their going ahead w/ the marriage, and the dancing sequences are anachronistically modern--but that's forgivable if the point was to demonstrate her prowess and appeal. I just hope someone would cast this actress in a fictional period film, because she captures Anne's character and appearance more than any others I've seen. Thx again for your channel!

Winston, well written and I agree with all you said. I am also an American southerner obsessed with this period, just like yourself. I very much enjoyed the Boleyn series as well. Nice to see like-minded people here, and I adore this channel.

_The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family_ has a French actress playing Anne Boleyn. Pretty accurate, given Anne's facility with French. Also, sloe-eyed, darkly complected, small-breasted - that was Anne.

First good to have you back Cavalier, you have been missed (In the darkest hour of historic dramas, when the history warriors were broken an the hope of all historians had faded, our savior returned to us.) See with the "Blood Sex and Royalty" docu-drama (God i hate the phrase), i honestly feel (Mostly for my tiny threat of a hope i have in humanity), that they bring in the historians ask them questions but then heavily edit or cut what they say down to like two seconds, because producers feel people are to dumb to grasp stuff (Which rather negates the point in have the historians there to begin with but never mind). And your best actors are from Coronation Street and Emmerdale and you use rap music seriously, the bar keeps getting lower and lower these days. Becoming Elizabeth wasn't unsalvagable, this series did have a good Lady Grey and Prince Edward which was a relief, but sadly the rest of the seires wasn't great and dear god if i see a Seymor clip again i'll go mad, hopefully Bella Ramsey can be convinced to do a Lady Grey spin off or another production might make one.

According to Wikipedia, her name is pronounced: /ˈrɒmələ ˈɡæri/. Gaeri: G air ey. And, please, please, please, cover the Serpent Queen; it's actually very good. As for Wolf Hall - I'd like them to do it in Medias Res; so it starts with Cromwell in his prison cell and it flashbacks back to each of the events as Cromwell narrates his final letter to Henry over the opening scene of each episode.

I agree. Mary was my favorite in the series; however, I loved the spicy Catherine Parr, but mostly due to liking the actress, who also played Lady Rochford in Wolfe Hall, I believe? I think the character of Mary I in general has been greatly unappreciated, giving all the focus on Henry VII and Elizabeth I. Henry VII and Mary I are also quite interesting historical figures, too.

@@MarilynRB Jessica Raine played Catherine Parr in _Becoming Elizabeth_ and Jane Boleyn in _Wolf Hall,_ aye. I thought they made Catherine Parr look bad: she's $@#&ing Thomas Seymour within the first five minutes of the first episode. They also make her look particularly ambitious - wanting to bring Elizabeth and Jane Grey into her household to use as pawns in the game of power.

_Blood, Sex & Royalty_ is the _Bridgerton_-ization of Anne Boleyn. Money was the sole lure for what I thought were reasonably respectable historians' participation in the mini-drama. One of those historians, I'm happy to say, traded brickbats with me online. It was an historical travesty - the language was wrong, the costumes were wrong, the feminism (no doubt playing to the program's female audience) was wrong.

The sad fact is Bujold ruined any other Anne's for me, she will never be beaten. I'm glad of that frankly, I've seen the pinnacle of Anne and that's satisfying. So refreshing to see an Anne that isn't all, "Come hither, Henry." Who would want to get with a dude who had been with and most likely had kids with her sister? But once she realized there was no way out she dictated terms which is really empowering I think. Maybe the Spanish Princess still haunts me but the girlboss charging into battle to be badass still makes me sick. There isn't one way to be a strong woman, and I've thought about it more with Elizabeth of York. If you wanted to show her intelligence and also the strength in a mother have her be active in her children's education like she was. Show it from the angle that those who bring up an educate the heirs control the future. That could have made her badass in a way genuine to her character.
@renshiwu305 Жыл бұрын
The only Anne Boleyns worth their salt are the ones who are ambitious and spiteful - Claire Foy in _Wolf Hall,_ Natalie Portman in _The Other Boleyn Girl,_ Natalie Dormer in _The Tudors,_ Dorothy Tutin in _The Sixth Wives of Henry VIII,_ etc. That's how Anne was. Anything less than such a portrayal is a fantasy. Genevieve Bujold's Anne (also Helena Bonham Carter's Anne in the miniseries _Henry VIII)_ is simply caught in Henry's web against her own will. That's not how it was. A woman who came up in the French court would've had ample training in the ways of courtly love, and a woman of no outstanding beauty wouldn't have caught Henry's eye any other way. Anne's great-grandfather married a baron's daughter; Anne's grandfather married an earl's daughter; Anne's father married a duke's daughter; Anne married the king. The Boleyns were social climbers and Anne was no different. Before Henry, Anne first involved herself with the son of the Earl of Northumberland - the North's premier peer. Anne's motto was "Groigne Qui Groigne" - (Let) Grumble Who Grumble, referring to those who opposed her elevation to the queenship. A modest woman wouldn't make such an immodest statement.

You know for who they should make a show? Agathocles of Egypt. Talk about a purge of the royal family.... he acended to as the main reigent to a puppet king after the death of Ptolemy the 4th and after that he killed everyone notable from the royal family including the mother of the new king due to a political allience that he made with the chief minister named Sosibius. This Sosibius then got never heard from again history wise (most likely he got killed by agathocles) and his son after a popular revolt who is also named Sosibius was the one that made sure to convince the ptolemy the 5th to codemn the regent to death. (note they also had the help of the army ) It is a nice and spicy tale that doesn't need much in terms of budget since most stuff can be done in like 10 rooms .
