This was lovely to see Marion and so simply done. Would you believe it, you made this blouse using an 18th century design process?! This is much like the method used to make ladies bedgowns in the 1700s. You have just tailored yours down to fit your style. This is fantastic! I have made an 18th century bedgown in just this manner, tho not using a tablecloth, for a re-enactment of the American Frontier. My character was an 18th century Dutch tailor from Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia Colony circa 1755. I cannot wear the corsetry many of the early colonist women wore and was so delighted to find that many women out on the frontier during this period did not wear corsets or stays, instead they had these lovely loose fitting bedgowns. Some historical travellers of that period who visited the frontier were appalled by what they saw. They spoke of women wearing no stays and men dressing in leather leggings and breachclothes even in church. This was too much for their refined tastes. It made me laugh of course because it told me there were fashion critics even in those days. 😅 This was truly delightful! What a good use for upcycling a tablecloth. 😊❤
@marionsworld242 ай бұрын
Well I never would have realised! Thanks Lesa. Did you start going to re-enactments first and then start sewing the clothes? Or was it the other way round...the sewing got you into it? I always used to think I'd like to hand make medieval clothes, but somehow I never got round to it. Maybe I should try it myself 🤔 I know I'd enjoy the sewing process...

@@marionsworld24 I sewed for many years and it was only after I retired that I did the frontier clothes, and I probably never would have done it, but I became close friends with a 4th great grandson of Daniel Boone. He did reenacting at Fort Boonesboro and Martin's Station in Kentucky and Virginia. Because of my background he wanted my opinion of his clothes. I found he had been buying clothes off the racks of vendors from these, "encampments" as they are called, and they were woefully inaccurate. I offered to make him a full set of handsewn frontier clothes and he was delighted with the idea. I had never done it before but I considered it couldn't be near as scary as some of the bridal gowns I had designed and made in the past. Besides we have the internet now, so I got onto some museum websites, researched the fabrics, structure of the clothes needed, and what few pictures there were of Daniel Boone, and made the clothes as close to the frontier garments as possible. I even purchased books on 18th century samplers to get a correct idea of the types of stitches used during the period. Linen was what we chose as fabric, which he ordered from Burnley & Trowbridge. To make a long story short he wore them to his next reenactings and they were a hit. He then decided to build a frontier half shelter, blacksmiths shop and encampment on his property. Since he was an architect by occupation this took no time at all. He called it Boone's Station. Of course it was only fitting that I should make myself some clothing for the inaugural encampment. We and a bunch of like minded friends got together one weekend and it was a blast. If folks had seen us they would have thought we were all mad. Why, you might ask? Because we all lived at that time on the Big Island of Hawaii, and the whole thing felt surreal. All of us dressed in 17th century American Frontier Colonial clothes amidst palm tree's and tropical flowers. It was a hoot and I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Everytime I watch you I learn how or gain an explaination for doing a particular stitch. This time the most helpful was how to figure in ease and sewing line placement. I have never seen a sewing machine that ran the threading for the bobbin down the side to a side bobbin winding post. I didn't know that there had ever been a machine made that way. BUT I have been in the U.S.A. except for 3 years back around 1954 when I was around 5-ish. I am learning, by watching you, more about how sewing hams can help when ironing pieces for sewing. I am so glad I stumbled on your site ..

Thanks Karen. I'm glad you're enjoying my channel. My machine is the same age as me! It's a 1959 Bernina Record and I love to sew with her. Someone must have the same one as they kept asking if I could show how she was threaded up, especially having the bobbin case underneath too. It's sometimes not obvious if you've been used to modern machines..

I had several card table size table cloths from my great-grandma. Didn't really want to cut them up but they only languish in a drawer, so.....I was brave & turned them into aprons.(which I wear daily). I think of grandma, & her embroidery work, every time I put one on! I had enough table cloths & dresser scarfs to make 3. I've come to believe this honors her legacy much more than "saving them for good"
