He Said - She Shed

Жыл бұрын

Since the new wood shop space in our pole building is almost ready, my old shop space in a 20' land/sea container has served its purpose.
It's a landmark day that David moved the last of his stuff out of the container. It's time to pass the keys to Renee and see what she plans to use it for next.
Thanks for watching!

That is so exciting to see how you are laying out and building your homestead. I’m anxious to follow along. The she shed will be fun to see what all you do with it.

Thanks for joining us Cathy! I'm grateful to have this container to organize and store all of my garden stuff. It's kind of a mess right now, but will be fun to create and organize this space with you.

Cool idea for a potting shed. I vote for paint and a barn quilt.

I've seen some beautiful quilt designs - and since I can't sew very well, maybe I could paint one! ;)

@@hesaid-sheshed I'm excited for the barn quilt, if that's what you choose. It will be beautiful! I'm a watercolorist and a quilter! Two skills I learned in the past 12 years. Both are my passions. I never used a sewing machine in my life until I made my first quilt. Another idea would be a mural with flowers and greenery.

Hi Paula! If I do end up creating a grow station or something in there, I will likely need to add some type of ventilation. Don't want it to get moldy/mildewy inside.

My experience is that you WILL want water in a potting shed. If you're going to run water to your garden area, it really wouldn't take much more to run a PVC pipe into the storage container at the same time. A couple of strategically placed gate valves, and it would be easy to winterize, if freezing is a concern. A repurposed sink, a drain that runs back into the garden, and you're set and ready to go!

I used a fiberglass laundry sink in my first ine, then I spotted someone had out to the curb a stainless steel table with a sink in it. It was 10 foot long and about 32 inches wide. I was by myself and I ask the homeowners if it was okay if I took it to repurpose. I am sure it was a comical site but I got it loaded into the back of my Jeep Liberty, I tied and bungee strapped it into, onto my car. Lol Thankfully I could go back roads and only had about 15 miles from home. It worked amazingly and it was free and saved it from going to the landfill. I built gardening benches with shelves out of old pallets. Great memories.

@@hesaid-sheshed absolutely. Potting plants can be a tad bit dirty. Lol I liked it because I could wash, sterilize my pots between uses. It was a lot easier than using buckets. A used kitchen sink would work great too.

Could you have glued the electric boxes on instead of bolting them? My SIL Made a sewing studio for my daughter in one of these. A potting shed! That reminds me of Living Traditions Homestead. They have a little building that’s a potting shed. I. Excited for you to have this space, Renee, to play with dirt!

Patiently wait and watch for a business to go out and harvest that stainless steel table with a sink in it. about 10 foot long and about 32 inches wide. Sounds like a winner that will help keep the floors clean and allow for test irrigation of mediums at a height that's easier to observe. I'll happily keep eyes peeled for you.

A stainless steel table with sink is an awesome idea! It would be great to create the mess outside and if it was next to my garden, I can wash veggies there too.

David and Renee, how wonderful it will be to have the extra storage container dedicated to a potting shed. I would be overjoyed to have the extra space and have a window or two installed to make it more inviting and less industrial. I can't wait to see your new vision for this space. ~Margie🤗🌱🪟

20 ft Cargo Containers on homeowners property is pretty common here on the Olympic Peninsula, sitting next to up-scale homes. They are usually painted the same color as the home, with the trim matching the home as well. Looks very nice. We have a nice once-over 20 footer that serves as a large shed for camping gear, a riding lawn mower, etc. Painting it to match our home is on this Springs agenda. Have Fun Renee & David!

I am definitely considering windows or perhaps an opening to be able to go from the container to a greenhouse. Just need something that can withstand strong winds that come from the Columbia River Gorge.

Hi Julia! Great minds think alike. ;-) We actually do have intentions to give a few glimpses of the inside of the house in some future episodes. There are a few more projects in the wood shop to get it tooled up and ready first. Once it's ready to go though, we have several built-ins we are excited about making for inside the house so stay tuned for those! Thanks for watching!

I think if you grew climbing plants up a timber trellis (that way the plants would not cause moisture to stick to the meta)l would look lovely.

That is a good idea! I have an old pallet leaning against it and right now I have some wild blackberries growing on it. They are super invasive, so I'd like something more intentional!

@hesaid-sheshed
@hesaid-sheshed Жыл бұрын
Hi Kelly! Try doing a search on Craigslist. The prices will vary a bit based on the condition of the container (and of course the size). Pro tip: There's a type of container called a "high cube" which is exactly what you'd think. It's a bit taller than a non-high cube. That extra headroom can give you some flexibility for building in some sort of creative overhead storage! Thanks for watching!!
