You're lucky your head is still attached! That thing feels like it would give you whiplash, just riding it through the air! Haha. Hope Steph's doing better! That's crazy from a small scratch getting infected like that. It'll be interesting to hear if she can tell you any things to look out for with scratches that we just don't know about! My jetski scratches me in some way every single time I get on it! That being said, I sort of figured out how to get it to sub, now I just gotta figure out how to hang on while it goes under! ;) Can't wait to see what you guys get into down at the JS bros!

Yeah, I guess I should be surprised it doesn't hurt me more often... it is like riding a ... mini 1100cc jet ski... Steph is a trooper. I get scratches and cuts all the time... it's crazy... I'm not sure but I think she was spending a lot of time in public places, hot springs, water park type stuff... perhaps also wearing bike pads. Some day I will ask how she thinks it happened. Excited to hang with the JS Bros... Always up to something interesting.

@@SoberCramer Just a sheet ... It has a LOT larger diamond pattern than the Jet Ski stuff. Cutting out out yourself is not too hard... You just need to make a template from cardboard or plastic first.

I basically only buy stuff on Ebay. There sellers are not allowed to be sluggards. That sucks when companies can't do what they exist to do! In the past couple weeks I blew up or broke a bunch of my stuff. You order parts, get half way into something then find another part you need. I hope selling the mill is the right move. Does that mean you don't need any endmills or square stock? Sounds like you're bringing the X2? I hope it survives!
@JoelArseneaultYouTube Жыл бұрын
I haven't had too bad of luck with timing on Ebay, but I have had issue with sellers selling me stuff that wasn't the right part at all... Like the piston rings for your engine. That's always the way it is... you just place your order and then find 3 more things you need ! haha. I will be selling my mill, but I will need as many endmills and as much stock as possible ... We will talk about it when I visit, haha. I really hope the X2 is up to the task... I had it out today and the crank is getting a little loose ... I took it apart to inspect and my pistons were touching my domes 🤣 ... I'm running way more squish than I was on my original modified head... but the crank is moving too much apparently.
@AtimatikArmy Жыл бұрын
Damn, how tight are/were you running your squish? Isn't around .040" or somewhere thereabouts ideal? You must be WAY tighter than that if you're making contact after some wear!
@JoelArseneaultYouTube Жыл бұрын
@@AtimatikArmy Ideal squish is just enough so that you don't touch, as long as you get some of the other details correct. On drag racing engines we would remove gasket till we had touch on, a fully warmed up engine, at max rpm, and then add .003" My squish was around 40, but due to my crank being sloppy that 40 isn't really 40. When you check squish you are loading your crank bearings, pins, rods etc. Once the engine is then running the play that added squish is now subtracting squish. An unevenly supported crank is going to have more flex and overall movement. I'm not surprised it touched. Last year on my modified head with a good crank, I was running .035" and never had any issues. On my 650 I was running 28-30. The main concern with squish being small, when modifying, is making sure that the squish velocity isn't too high. This can be with a taper that is a degree or so more than the angle of the top of the piston. There's a lot to it. I'm basically throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks, most of the time.... and using a little experience to fuel my ideas, haha.
@AtimatikArmy Жыл бұрын
@JoelArseneaultKZbin Got it yeah that's cool. So in a perfect world you want squish to be basically just shy of making contact. In a practical sense, that may be why I've heard the number .040" kicked around because it's a pretty difficult thing to calculate changing errors like wear, etc. .040" is probably a pretty safe general number to shoot for for motor builders. On my 550, I don't remember exactly but it was rather high, like .150" so we decked my head .100". Then the problem was way too much compression so I knew i had to make my domes larger but could leave the squish band alone. So I ground a spherical shaped form cutting tool, held the head by the spark plug in a 4 jaw chuck and took note of how deep my cut was on the DRO so I could repeat on the next dome. Needless to say, I was very interested in your head with replaceable domes videos and your completely different approach and was quite impressed!
@JoelArseneaultYouTube Жыл бұрын
@@AtimatikArmy Exactly. Yamaha doesn't assemble an engine and check squish. They calculate the part dimensions to give them a reasonable squish. On a good day their engines have .070" but on a bad day they can be sure that it won't be smaller than .040" An engine builder, building a performance engine, will actually check and verify the squish. BRP, Bombardier, Ski-Doo.... actually have a special tool. You bolt the cylinder on with the pistons in place and no base gasket. You take a reading, and that reading then tells you what base gasket(s) to use. If you buy an engine gasket set, it comes with one head gasket and about 10 different base gaskets that you add, remove or stack to get the desired squish. I don't think they even tell you what the squish goal is, you just use the tool and install the right gasket(s). If you look it up on the internet, there is a LOT of debate about squish. What sealed the deal for me was reading an article by a former Moto GP two stoke engineer / mechanic. Most of what he said was over my head, but I understood enough, haha. Yes... If you have a lot of volume contained in the squish that means that the ratio of volume between the squish and chamber are out of sorts. The squish area should be 40 - 45% of the total bore, but most run more like 50% This makes for a smaller combustion chamber with dependence on the squish to keep compression reasonable. You either have access to a much larger lathe than me, or you are much braver, haha. I thought about doing that with my 650 head, but with the triple ... not a chance !

The mill inspires you to do silly things so you’re selling it?! What? It’s all self control Joel! That tool is invaluable for small precision tasks. So you’re going to pay a machine shop every time you need work done?
