Today we check out the Beta of Halls of Torments and play the new character Norseman, a very interesting character who double strikes on his attacks by dual wielding his weapon. Sadly we keep facing old issues, mainly that it is really hard to tell where damage numbers and some stats are actually coming from, but I hope over the process of the Beta there will be some clean-up work on that.

Flamestrike charges when you aren't in range of enemies, that charge is a HUGE multiplier to the radius of the fire effect from upgrading it, and the single target hit it does. I had flamestrike critting for 35k in a run today :D

So, after playing with this ability - it can actually be made to be broken. The 100% crit chance and the crit damage multipliers are bait. They don't actually matter because the damage of the ability is already so high when charging it, and any additional damage over the enemy's HP is wasted and doesn't count toward unlocks. So, you want to start with the 20% damage at Level 1, double the 20% attack speed at level 2 and 3, then save your last doubling for the attack speed at Level 9 -- this one is already doubled so you will get 80% attack speed from doubling this single node. To take it a step further if you are trying for a single weapon setup, you want to use the memories on the -15% charge duration traits at level (these reduce how long it takes the bar to fill up) at 3, 6 and 10 - and the 20% damage nodes at 2, 7, 8.

This guy seems to be 100% range and mult attack build. The skull recharges every time you hit one enemy and mult hits increase the speed, when recharged it explodes.

when you hover over attack speed on an ability or weapon it should tell you all the things that are contributing to it. You were seeing the 4K damage numbers because when you are not near enemies flame strike charges up and the next hit has a multiplier on it.

@@thenonexistinghero You can read all you want, but everyone knows that it is unclear whether a certain attribute is adding to a stat or not. But you already knew that. Your comment was disingenuous, but you and everyone else already knew that too. I debated whether or not to reply and point out this obvious aspect. That's probably why you commented anyway; to obtain attention instead of adding to the conversation in any meaningful way.

@@thenonexistinghero We are not talking about Dex or the video. IT is about game features. When a player hovers over a skills attack speed value for instance, there should be a tooltip popup that states what is contributing to that stat in the game. This is a feature that should be added to the developers so that the player should not have to wonder if a certain upgrade adds to a stat or not. Again, has nothing to do with the great videos that Dex puts out. It would however alleviate a lot of the confusion that Dex and all other players have on what is affecting what in the game. This is solely up to the developers to add this.

hey the big explosion is coming from the hero itself called frost nova i think and shows as dmg in char screen^^ for fire strike you have to be quite close and if you are it perma hits the target but low dmg if you are a range it charges up what i saw atleast in my testing. the lvl up stats for the class you can look up in char screen mouseover all the stats i think there is always a stat that you get every few lvl and one every 10 lvl but didn play every class yet hope i could help a bit :) and love the ball talk in this vid :D

9:35 you say you wish it was easier to get the weapon you want. They mentioned something in the beta post. I haven't finished unlocking it yet, but I think one of those two new bottles will allow you to reroll a ticket, and the other one will allow you to banish a ticket weapon. I'm going to keep playing and will edit this comment once I have unlocked it. EDIT: one potion allows you to reroll a chest and the other allows you to reroll a ticket. Both have a maximum stack of 3

Meh, I think this just makes something that could be quite simple rather hard, depending on how many potions you will get. If it allows you to always get everything you want it would be fine, it's the sandbox experience reward once you played through. But if not, then you can still end up doing a 15 minute run just to throw it away because you didn't get the stuff you wanted. I wanted to make a ball build video and stopped it because 3 attempts in a row failed, the biggest issue is also getting the right versions of the upgrades

@DexTag I agree that it would be nice to be able to choose what you start with. I've probably done hundreds of resets at this point in order to start with what I actually want.

@@DexTag I think a happy solution would be an equippable item in say, a trinket slot that guarantees a particular weapon on the first ticket. This way it's not something you always have, and you have to find one for each weapon. This could also allow one to use a different character's main weapon in combination with another character, which could be pretty interesting to mess with, too. The second 'main weapon' would block one of the 6 normal weapon slots as well.

the frost avalanche size might be increased by range, kind of like how your auto attacks were doing the same, you kept upgrading range, but they also got a bit wider.

Could be. Also the devs said they were working on increasing character stats a bit on every level up. Not sure if it's implemented yet. But if it is, then perhaps this character might excel in growing projectile size per level (but I don't think the main weapon was affected, so maybe only for sub weapons).

@@thenonexistinghero true true. that and the new force stat replacing 2 prior stats(piercing and duration), and adding knockback is really cool. saw asmon play this, instantly thought "this is a game i'd like.", bought it, then started watching other peoples content on it. can't wait to see how this game ends up, it's really fun.

So. Trust me on this. The Norseman and Arcane Orb are a perfect match with the speed boosts he gets. I got those things to an absolutely insane speed. When they are going that fast having 30 orbs isn't necessary. My last run on Adony stage 2 i was stressing the limits of the game to produce the damage numbers. the FPS was dropping hard lmao. Between the Orbs, the new Flame Ability, And Radiant Aura it was absolutely absurd and i could still stand still with hundreds of enemies pushing in. Honestly surprised i didn't crash the game lol. So, how you wanna do it is take ALL Movement speed and double the big MS traits. Dedication has one that gives 18% so X2 that. Then do the same for the summon traits that give +18ms. then Orbs get +1 orb at [III, VI, & X]. Take those. Everything else goes into damage and MS Make sure to memorize the +damage for balls so you can get those along with +Orb. Take FlameStrike which will naturally buff with ATKSPD and Area traits. Take Aura and Max that as well because it scales with ATKSPD and Area. both upgrades for the flame and Magic and you will absolutely stress this game LMAO. From here it is luck of the draw on Beta items. but what you REALLY want is ATKSPD gloves for the +40% and then the Amulet that gives damage based on missing health. The beta will give +2% per missing health point. This means you wanna take +Health for more damage. Norseman also hase excellent Regen. i would get that as well. and Bulwark because then you take MUCH less damage and block alot. Ultimately when you fight a boss you can basically stand still. The more damage they do to you the more you do to them. Try to get to about 10-20% life and you will annihilate the boss. This will also allow you to stand still for insane mobs because you can get to like +150% damage and more from the amulet. If you have the gloves, your Inate ability "Frost Nova" will cycle much faster as well. Same for Flame Strike. Trust me. This build is Fn Absurd.

Dex: Throws out cascades of ice and fire. Also Dax: "I wonder if these are physical." And before anyone says, that attacks like Fire Punch and Ice Punch in Pokemon are physical as well, so you can have physical elemental attacks: Correct. Blizzard, Ice Beam, Flamethrower etc. aren't physical, though. The elemental attacks used in this video are so insanely obviously not physical, that shouldn't even be a question in anyone's mind. In most games, physical attacks are presented with a physical component. It's either a weapon attack or a punch/kick or a sword being materialised. Elemental attacks like the ones shown in the video are so obviously based on magic conjuration and not physically hitting someone or creating a blade to physically hit someone.

I ran map 1 on normal to see how it was. I have all achievements/upgrades/equipment. Archer with Fire Strike and Ring Blades was barely holding off the waves, it was kinda sad. At the end Fire Strike only had 300k damage it's pathetic. Ring Blades did 4M but the clearing power just wasn't there. Also only got to level 67 with jade amulet when before it was easy to get over 80 on map 1. I like challenge, but once you have everything it's reasonable for map 1 to be easy. Also the bosses were total pushovers still, it was just the waves that were too much with how sad flame strike and ring blades are.

Dex: "Ok, these bears, they are no joke..." Me, yelling at the screen: "WELL THEN STOP RUNNING INTO THEM!!!" I get that it's part of his playstyle, but MAN does it leave me confused when he's doing so well dodging and kiting them around, then just dives face first into a horde of monsters for no apparent reason. He has exit points. Hes NOT getting cornered or too far away to do damage. WHY DO YOU DO DIS?!

My biggest concerns are: Force - what the hell does that even mean. It is different per skill basis and it does different things and it doesn't really say what it does to each skill or weapon. It could be pierce, duration or whatever but it never says what it is in-game. Frozen depths - extremely overtuned. It is way to difficult to the point where it is not really challenging but annoying as you kite damage sponge mobs around just to isolate the boss. Many of the weapons are simply not viable. Damn even some characters are not really working too great with the new level. Cleric or Warlock are just frustration fest cause you can barely kill anything so you don't level up so it is harder every minute it is a vicious cycle. IMO it should made slightly easier, we have agony now for challenge. Standard version of the level should be doable on any character. Also I think the deal with the tickets is that they currently not always spawn under the minibosses. At least it seemed like it when I was playing.

The game has in general a lot of issues and I do not like the approach to just overload content instead of approaching these things. If you wanted to properly play the game, you were forced to watch videos or read the wiki. Some of my personal notes I would like to see: -Instead of stepping up clarity, the update made it harder instead (to some extend) -Going for specific builds is now harder than ever before, which is what gives the game the best longevity after you played through it (as in, going for specific builds. Though I was told there are potions to improve that, but unless they really deal with the issues it would just make it slightly easier, where it was super unlikely before) -A lot of things were hit with severe nerfs where I am not sure why that even happened, while the patch notes states buffs (I guess they wanted to go away from general equipment, but all of them already had a downside to them. But before you just didn't need to move, which is why they worked so well. Now you have to move a lot and that makes them entirely pointless) -Some texts and numbers are still wrong -This statement means 0 offence against the developer, but it feels like the game is not really tested/played properly before being released. A lot of these issues can be figured out by playtests from the perspective of players -Im not the biggest fan that the update tried to bring all characters to the same level but by nerfing them. Some effects were just better in general, but others had better specific effects for specfic builds. No need to equal them out, its what made them unique So here are some things to help the game: -allow the player to choose from all weapons with the stage tickets, this would be a total of 3 available to you. Let this be unlocked after you defeated the boss of the stage, similar to how you get the bonus ticket -have a trait list for each character that you unlock when they reach level 100, that shows every single trait they get and what different paths exist -have a trait list for every weapon that you unlock with the 3 million damage achievement, same story -this one is a bit more complicated, but when you pick stuff like e.g. Force, it could list what it changes per weapon. To explain this is a simple way, let's say you pick bonus Area. While hovering over it, it would show the weapon icon of each weapon affected by it, and what the current stat vs the increase looks like. This especially helps to figure out what stats affect what, for example how movement speed buffs a lot of weapons -upon hovering over a trait that has multiple options, let the player rightclick to open a book or so that would show all alternative options for this current upgrade, so you dont always have to screenshot the above mentioned tree you unlock at lvl 100/3 million damage -in general I miss information on characters. You dont know at all what many of them do until you play them, but what you understand is based on your existing game knowledge. Take Shield Strength affecting Shield Maiden, that Clerics main attack applies Fragil and Affliction, that Sorceress applies Electrify and can bounce etc.

@@DexTag - We must not forget, this is a beta. Things aren't supposed to be balanced on a beta. Bugs are to be expected in a beta. They need players to play the new levels and try the altered traits to test and see what's the best way to balance the game. When I saw your run on the new stage with the archer, I noticed an empty square on the right side when you're selecting a weapon from the scroll (I honestly don't know why you call it a ticket, looks like a scroll to me ;p), this leads me to believe one of the new potions if not both are potions to reroll and ban weapons. It's quite unfair to say devs aren't testing it when they are with the beta, that's the whole point of beta versions of games. I'm not saying there aren't things to improve, however, it seems like you and some people here have forgotten what a beta version is.

@@GPS08 No, the things I listed were already an issue prior and are now enhanced. Lightning Affinity used to give Attack Speed, which it doesn't read - instead of Lightning Damage boost. This is just an example that came to my mind. A lot of weapons would not unlock certain traits, e.g. Golem who can crit would not unlock Crit Chance and Crit Damage, same story for other weapons that can use Area/Range and wouldn't unlock them for level ups. The ticket already had the issue before the beta. Many skills were in my opinion not intuitive & the lack of all the suggestions I wrote are based on the current version, which would have all been good before already. Also any sort of reference to know how certain characters work were and are missing. What I do agree with is that this is a beta and there will be changes, but I haven't pointed out any bugs or issues specific to the beta right now - for example how I spawned enemies that were only meant to be in there with the new mode, by enabling it on another stage. What you are right on is the balancing of equipment/skills which will most likely get adjusted (hopefully) in the next 2-4 weeks, but I am not sure this will happen. The changes to equipment is going into the direction that the player uses specific equipment more over general equipment - so something like Attack Speed and Damage boosts got nerfed, while other things with unique effects tend to be buffed. I hope thats reverted but I dont expect it.

​@@DexTag - I am under the impression that HoT is an early access game (yup, it is, just checked it on Steam). Not just this update, the whole game is still under development as it's still in its beta phase. Stats are bound to change. I do agree, the game isn't very intuitive. I went in hot without watching anyone play this (I think it was like 1 or 2 months ago) and I simply hated the game cos it didn't seem like a bullet heaven to me. Only after watching Asmon play this did I decide to go back, as his gameplay looked more like a bullet heaven than what I had experienced. Like, I didn't know I could unlock new weapons, I didn't know weapons would upgrade after lvls 3 and 6 of the weapon, I didn't understand or knew much about what was happening. This game is very odd when it comes to progression on a level. You start really weak and get stronger at a very slow pace until about 10/15 mins in and all of a sudden your power boosts up significantly. I think the damage was too much for the most part, overkill as you might call it with a sponge boss at the end. And also, I understand the damage nerfs, the pot that doubles stats is broken asf, and I think the damage nerfs was to balance the potion use. Being able to double a stat of a trait 3x is beyond OP, especially when you know where to use them. But as I said, the game still has some QoL and improvements, balancing in general to fix some issues. However, the only reason I replied to you was because I found it unfair you accusing the devs of not testing anything, when in fact, we are all playing an early version beta with the game still in development, which the entire purpose of it is to test it.

This beta seems kinda rushed. a lot of bugs and the text on many of the upgrades are very vague i think.. The new spells seem bad imo, and I dunno if the hitboxes of the new monsters and bosses are good enough? seem to be getting hit way too much from stuff that you dont do in the other levels

The Beta experience so far has been awful. Everything except Agony feels worse and less fun. Flame Strike is garbage and the damage for it is so terrible on large groups (which is the majority of any level) instead of addressing the issues with the skill, they lowered the damage requirement for the achievement from 3 million to 2 million... and is still awful to try and reach.

You can't even ghost wall pad on the bridge anymore either. The nerfs overall, and ghost wall removal, wouldn't feel SO miserable if the achievements didn't work the way the achievements do. But since the achievements require an excessive focus on certain weapons and handicapping other better weapons, it really feels bad. If damage total included overkill, Flame Strike would be fine... but when you attack a 100 HP Skeleton for 5000 and get 100 Achievement credit... ugh.

@@jaeusa160 Yup... the second you start building up burn damage, it immediately overtakes what Flame Strike damage is trying to do. Most of the time I will reset over and over till I can start with it and then at best I hit level 60 while never picking up any other scrolls besides the 2 needed to fully upgrade Flame Strike. I've never been able to get Flame Strike to rank 10 because there's so many other passives that get rolled, the ability sucks so you level painfully slow and I run out of reroll elixirs while trying to focus solely on Flame Strike... I ran Shield Maiden on Ember Grounds on Agony, tried different equipment setups, went all in on melee bonuses while trying to avoid attacking and still couldn't hit the 2 million damage achievement.

@@letari2252 It took almost the entire 30 minutes, while handicapping my build to let Flame Strike actually attack things as often as possible and overkill as rarely as possible, to get that over 1 million damage for the 2nd evolve unlock. And it was my lowest damage button at the end, below Burn damage and Level 1 Radiant Aura and Level 1 Phantom Needles. I had to go ultra tank and sit in the middle of enemies to let it hit things and it still barely got over 1k dps.
