3 Night from Tampa to Cozmel for 2= $1596 + fees and taxes. Flight to departure city $1431 for two round trip. Total cost $3027 before taxes and fees and that doesn't include hotel cost if needed depending on flight times. Two of those nights are on board one day at Cozmel. This is on the Carnival Paradise a 1998 ship. I can fly to Cozmel stay 5 nights and fly back for half that. The cruise industry is about to experience some financial losses due to greed.

This is a lesson as to why you don’t just listen to one person, especially one who doesn’t have experience in reporting news, because in all the other reports he had arranged to meet with the 19 year old so they had some sort of relationship before. The reports also said they have ruled out anything illegal. Also, they were in Brandonburg not Berlin which is a couple of hours away from the port. While they haven’t specifically said what the relationship was the fact that they were able to quickly rule out anything illegal we can’t or shouldn’t think it was anything nefarious without any evidence. Just throwing this out there so it may not be the case but Brown is a common German name (shortened from VonBrown after WWI) so there’s a chance they could’ve been related. Either way thought we need to wait for more information before speculating.

I have sailed with my grandson and I remember that, at que check point to leave the ship, whenever he was showing his ship card, they asked them who he was with. This is great way not to let a teenager wander out of the ship by himself.

My 14 year old was left out off the Diamond Princess a few days ago. It was customs day before heading to Korea and we had planed to meet at a lounge to get it done. We are a Family of 5, in 2 cabins. Since she was my cabin mate, I was the only person authorized to walk off with her. Princess doesn’t do multiple cabins in one booking so Spouse and I had 2 separate booking numbers. Ship staff came to the lounge and told everyone to get off the ship for customs, I wasn’t there yet, and when I arrived 15 minutes later, my daughter was off the ship and detained by immigration because she had her passport but not an ID, plus she was a minor. Princess Security knew they had messed up really bad, and it was the same day that the kid in Germany had their incident. Princess apologized and said that they were going to re-train their staff. That’s all they said and did.

Two things I agree with. The cruise experience on mass market lines has degraded while cruise lines want more of my money to partake. We did VV last time and our next one is booked on Resilient. We really enjoyed the Virgin experience.

Does anyone feel it would be correct or reasonably justified to reduce the gratuities accordingly if you purchased specialty dining?. For example, RC has 7 night speciality dining for 2 people is $462.00 PLUS $83.00 for gratuity. Since you wouldn't be dining in the main dining room likely, the gratuities should be reduced by 83.00, otherwise you are double paying for gratuities just for the dining portion of it. Yes, I know the gratuities go for room steward, buffet service, pizza, etc...service as well. I am only referring to REDUCING it accordingly. I am not a cheap skate I don't feel, I know the staff works hard; but if I am not receiving the main dining room service, I feel the gratuities should be reduced some. Any thoughts?

That said, if she works, she had to take off work and lose money, perhaps pay for a sitter if other children OR a pet was involved. Another cruise channel said that Princess "flew the parents to Germany to assist in the search" and that they acknowledge some unnamed mistake on the cruise line's part. I'm guessing security blundered in letting the kid off by himself. The kid looks older than 14 from the picture. Impressive that the kid made friends and just hung out with the locals. Age may not have come up when he fascinated the young Germans. Crashed at some young adult's apartment. Quite a story for him to tell. Glad it all worked out.

I agree, this is not the cruise lines responsibility. My experience of getting off at ports, especially when the gangway first opens, is that it is one long queue of people. There may have been adults all around him, and he could easily have been talking to other people making it appear like he was part of a group. To expect the cruise line to verify that minor is accompanied by a designated adult could really slow things down

We went on a cruise last year with our 16 yr old daughter. When we would leave the ship and she scanned her ship card it would flag that she was under 18 and the staff always verified that we were her parents leaving the ship with her. I guess i assumed it was that was a rule of disembarking all ceuise ships.

Our family and friends just did Symphony of the Seas out of Bayonne and we all felt exactly like you said. Cutbacks in all the areas you mentioned. The dining area service was atrocious. One night we had dinner and. Nothing to drink. We didn’t even all get served at the same time! Stateroom service was good but again, you’re correct that you only get the room done once. It used to be 2 or 3 times a day however it was always at a time when we needed to get to the room to change so we didn’t mind the cutback there. Good went downhill big time on RC. Good thing for El Loco Fresh to save the day though! I don’t see it going back to the way it was, they make too much money now. As far as the kid goes, by the horrible pic they used to identify him he doesn’t look 13 or 14 at all. He looks like a 19/20 year old wise ass in the picture. I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t bother looking at his age because he looks so much older. He doesn’t look like a kid. Thanks for all of your videos!

I feel like this needs to be said because Jay isn’t telling the whole story, at least what is being reported. First, he was found in a city just outside Brandenburg not Berlin. Second, authorities are saying that this wasn’t just a random person picking up a stranger. This was a prearranged meeting and they so far have ruled out anything illegal on the 19 year olds part. There are still a lot of questions that need to be answered but so far it seems like the 14 year old planned this all along.

According to the Police, he was found in Postdam, which is the capital of the state Brandenburg, but is on the outskirts of Berlin. Just outside Berlin is correct, or in Brandenburg (the state).

@@QuorJa Potsdam is roughly an hours drive away from Berlin and is not part of the same area. Also, it’s not like Brandonbirg or Potsdam are unknown cities. There was a HUGE conference there called The Potsdam Conference after WWII. Saying he was found in Berlin or just outside Berlin would be like saying someone was found in or just outside DC when they were actually found in Baltimore, they ate two completely different areas.

I did not intend zu diminish Potsdam, just wanted to clarify that it is in the STATE of Brandenburg (and its capital), not next to the CITY Brandenburg. Regarding the hours drive, it have been some years since I was there, but as far as I remember the two cities share a border. You can take one step to cross from Berlin to Potsdam.

We’ve been on 2 Carnival cruises in the past 10 months and their muster station drill is great. They spread each station out. You just go there, once they get a couple people, it takes less than 10 minutes and you’re done

Kids can’t get on or off the ship without THE ADULT attached to their booking. I could not get off the boat with my kids because they were in a room with their aunt. The aunt was needed to allow debarking. Grandma must have scanned off too. Ain’t no other way!

Muster drill is all about compliance. If passengers simply complied with whatever method is required, it would be an easy process. Moving away from the electronic version is probably our (passengers) fault. Every cruise I have been on the captain has to threaten those who have not completed the muster exercise before setting sail. The penalty for this non-compliance? I can only speak for Disney but there is a box you can check that will allow your teen to be able to come and go off the ship themselves. I would never allow that myself but if Princess has something similar the grandmother could have allowed it.

Cruises were around $300-$500 for a 7 day balcony back then. Carnival cruise stocks were low back then too. Now carnival paid for our stocks with all the obc they give us and the ships were empty back then

Hubby and I took 4 cruises right after COVID. They were giving them away (nearly literally) and they were EMPTY. We were near Galveston at the time so it was convenient. We loved it. Then on the 5th that we booked it was back to full or nearly. That was it until end of last year we took an Alaska cruise. Our next is in September to Hawaii. This is a cheap one too, only reason we are taking it. But yeah, its getting expensive, we will probably hold off for a while after this Sept cruise.

With cabin staff I was asked do I want 1or2 cleans , I opted for one as I could see the over load of work they had to do. Cruise lines are stung the highest port charges in the world and now some sort of new Licence to sail to Australia, our government is a real problem to cruise lines making it very costly with losses cruising to Australian ports. There is a petition the cruise guy has set up to stop the new licence extra fees charges . This was prearranged. He wasn’t randomly picked up & the police said nothing illegal took place. There’s a LOT more to this story that the 14 year old & the grandmother need to answer but this wasn’t just a random event.

I can see how it happens. If there is a large group of people all getting off the ship at the same time, I would imagine crew members would believe the minor is with them. If I remember correctly, the crew member simply scans your card, checks to make sure the photo matches you, and then on to the next passenger. I really don't think any rules were broken by Princess. I think it's just a situation that nobody thought would happen. I do believe there will be some NEW rules coming for every ship, not just Princess, regarding minors exiting the ship.

Eventually cruise lines will price themselves out. As it is cruise ports are disappearing left and right. Before long ships won’t be able to dock anywhere except the port of origin. My last 7 day cruise in March cost 10 large. Now I find myself trying to decide do I want to spend $15000 on a cruise or expand the recreational area in my back yard.

He met this 19 year old on line and he wanted to meet them in person. He was to young to be getting off with out an adult. What bugs about the dumbing down of service on the cruise ships. Such as the quality of the food, and selections. I'm good with one time cleaning of my cabin. But these cruise lines are making up the money they lost during covid. The stock prices are doing much better. There ships are full. The are making a lot of money every quarter. So when are they going to share the wealth with the loyal customers who have bringing them back financially. You can bet some of people running these cruise lines are getting paid. They don't need to bite the hands that feed them.

It was an act of defiance from the teen who had a pre-arranged meeting with another gamer he had met online. He and grandma had an argument, and he took off.

Cruising is nothing like it was back 25 years ago like everything else has change Carnival use to have real bands not the put together ones they have now the food was alot better room service was to the club is a mess now people act like a fool getting drunk , I stop going to the clubs and I love music they act like the club is a hole in the wall not the song the DJ have gotten better on the Lido Deck but I still go anyway I am starting to do more resort now I got two cruises book for this year so far and 3 resort vacation for this year

Unfortunately in Europe, especially Germany, ( which I lived in for 8 years), Holland and Northern Europe, they aren’t so stringent with teenagers- they have a lot more freedom- perhaps a little too liberal ,which may explain why no one questioned this boy getting off the ship alone and heading to Berlin? I am Maltese and live in Malta we aren’t that liberal and besides we don’t have trains and if you travelled around for 2 hours you would end up in Sicily 😂 We are very small! 😢

No identification is needed to board a train in Europe. Passports are needed only if crossing a border.

This sounds like this was something that he was planning any way. So spoiled brat, couldn't have his way and went to a gaming friend that was already in play...but yes something should flag the card that this is a minor trying to get off ship alone...
