Just a quick update about the problems with the cyclone not working well with finer dust. I now say that I no longer feel that this unit will ever work well in my application and do not recommend it.

Excellent video! Now I just wonder what on earth Grizzly was thinking by putting that tube right through the cyclone. That really messes up the cyclone efficiency. I guess it could be saved by cutting that small pipe of and sealing everything. Your Super Dust Deputy works so much better!

I really wonder why they put that there. Really messed up the ability to seperate fine dust. The dust deputy definitely works great, should have gone that way first and not wasted time and money on this. Thanks for watching.

@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 truly a bummer man. i got a big oneida 5hp the white metal ones used and while its probably overkill i am absolutely amazed at how clean everything stays. the metal trap under my filter maybe has a 1/8 inch of powder in it after 8 to 10 full 55 gallon barrel dumps and tapping the filter. this video will help a lot of people from headaches if they watch it. i watch alot of your videos. keep up the awesome work!

This fall when I get back in the woodshop I am going to cut that tube out that crosses the cyclone path. If that doesn't fix it I will be buying a dust deputy. This one has just been good for large chips so far if you seal the top. I see it as a waste of money. Thanks for watching.

You can use a bag in any of them by connecting a hose from the can back to the inlet the idea is pull a vacuum to hold the bag in place but make sure to use a bag that stretch over the top so you don't have any leaks.

I just thought buying one that came from a factory with a bag would work properly from the start. From seeing how the turbulence from that piping looks to push the fine dust over the edge and into the filter makes me think that pipe location was a mistake. Thanks for watching.

I have to say, I have this unit and do not have the same issues. A couple things to note from your video. First, at the :35 mark, you take the lid off of the unit and the metal ring that hold the bag down/in place is missing. It shows up at the 1:28 mark when you pull it out of the bottom of the barrel. That is an incorrect installation. The bag goes in first, then that ring goes over the bag. Also, the lid has a pretty good foam seal on the underside, so if you are not getting a good seal, you can adjust to the two lock down clamps on the barrel to get a tighter fit. As for the pressure hose, I'm not sure about that on mine, I'd have to go back and look and see, but that little bit of dust is nothing. As previously asked in other comments; what dust collector do you have connected to this? Maybe too much CFM being pulled in? Maybe partially open another blast gate?

It is hooked to the 2 hp grizzly they recommend it for. When I hook it to my thickness sander most of the dust goes right through it as shown in the video sanding the chest panels. You can see the turbulence caused by the tube causing it to roll right around. It gets most of the large chips but my old trash can lid did that for $29.00. I bought this for my 24 inch thickness sander and it is not good at all with the fine dust. You can't open other lines with the sander running. It was impossible to get a good seal on the crinkles in the oversized bag it comes with. I am stuck with it and will try cutting put the cross tube that seems to be causing the problem. Last grizzly tool for me, none of them are quite right. Thanks for watching.

If you can use it without the bag, you can take the hose off and plug the pipes. You can just dump the canister. Not a great choice, but it should work.

I am doing that now. The fine dust still goes through but it gets most of the large chips without wrapping. I think the pipe must be cut out to solve that. The bag was the main reason I purchased it for. Thanks for watching
@GabrielMillerd
@GabrielMillerd 5 жыл бұрын
To understand this the hole, from the bag barrel to the cyclone, is to equalize the pressure ... otherwise the bag will invert and head down the tube. This 'feature' is only needed if you want to bag your material and it's a significant design change compared to just having material land in the barrel. It sounds like you would be happier without that feature. The need for plastic wrap seems most problematic and the bag's wire not fitting, in the video the wire is on the outside of the bag. It's important that the pressure outside of the bag not mix with the inside of the bag all that much, this is why the tube is small the there is the wire strap. I assume that the bag is raising up during dust collection, due to the bag not being secured and the pressure leaking around it. This causing the flow of particles to go right out into the filter as the container is 'full' and the dust has no where else to go. Again, the indication of this in my mind is that the bag wire/strap is not on the bag, this would mean the air can leak around the bag.

For what I paid, I expected it to work right out of the box. Probably going to replace it with a dust deputy in the future. There's no way to properly seal the crinkled bag over the lip and the fine dust from my thickness sander is not caught by the cyclone. Great idea but poor implementation. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the excellent review. I have been looking at ways to setup “way overdue” DC in my shop. Saw the grizzly and it looked ideal. Decided to check reviews on it and that brought me here. Why would they stick a pipe in the middle of a tornado? Too bad, since it is much less expensive “long term” to fix things before you take them to market.

I'm with you, there shoulden't be a tube through the cyclone. If I was you I would cut that tube out and block the holes. I must admit I would have thought a company as big as Grizzly would have a better customer complaints department, but they seem to think if they ignore you the problem would go away. I for one will not be getting any Grizzly products and if enough of your subscribers shout enough they may realize their error.

My guess is that single cyclones can never filter all particles sizes. I think this cyclone does a fantastic job at separating large particles. To filter the dust like particles you probably need an array of smaller cyclones in series with this one. You just cannot expect a single cyclone to filter almost everything. Physics prevents that.

My 2 dust deputies hooked to vacuums get almost all of it. This one has something wrong with the design to have high efficiency. At the price it is t it should work better. Thanks for watching.
@christopherpardell4418
@christopherpardell4418 Жыл бұрын
Properly designed a single cyclone will get 99% or greater of all particles. The only particles it will miss are the ones that can stay suspended in the airflow regardless of centrifugal action and friction with the sidewalls of the cone. A series of separators will not remove finer particles because of their surface area to weight does not change, and each successive cyclone would reduce CFM and airspeed, which would LESSEN centrifugal separation and make it easier for fine particles to remain suspended. Ergo, smaller cyclones will not catch finer particles. This cyclone looks to be poorly designed because it does not have an inclined ramp to divert the incoming cyclonic flow down the surface of the funnel, which increases frictional separation. And that pipe leading thru the cyclone does not seem to be doing what it needs to do which is pull clean air from under the bag. I do not understand why it would be ported thru the cyclone plenum at all. If you are going to rely on one to keep the bag from deflating it should be ported into the tube leading from the cyclone to the blower. Not BEFORE the cyclone. That much dust at the bottom might also be because your bags get holes in them and the partial vacuum sucks the dust out the bottom of the bag. You could always opt to block off this port and just have the empty can catch all the particles. Dumping the whole can into the trash when it gets full.

I really liked how easy it was supposed to be to just swap out a bag and decided to order one. I thought all cyclones were about the same efficiency but now I know they are not.
