Must be about time for an update on those straw bales you planted. Did they end up getting enough water, or did the wind dry them out too much? They really need to be against a wall or covered down both sides to maintain their moisture in all but the wettest environments, in my experience. You could even pack them in a raised bed that's plastic lined and they'll work; but out in the open, on their own, I'll be very surprised if they yield a great result.
