Fr! There was a fire scare in my building shortly before Christmas. A neighbor let me know we needed to evacuate the building, that the fire department was here and everything. We live in an old house converted into 3 apartments. There's an upstairs and downstairs unit in the front of the house. I live in an addition that was built on the back and is like a little British house in design. So I didn't hear the neighbours alarms and mine didn't go off because my place wasn't smokey. It was horrifying running around trying to grab my cats; who were running away from me and hiding under furniture. My frenzied energy and shouting to my daughter "Get your snow pants and everything on!! We need to get out!!" was scaring the cats. I was also sniffing around my place for any smoke and looking for any signs of fire admist the panic. I didn't see or smell anything and was wondering what to do about my hiding cats, my daughter was all bundled up and stepping outside when the same good neighbor came back over to update me on the situation: The downstairs neighbors had left a pot on the stove. There was no damage and no fire, just a lot of smoke to be cleared out. So I didn't need to worry about my kitties. On Christmas Eve another neighbor (across the street) seemingly had a similar fire scare. I don't know the situation; we don't know eachother, I just know I saw fire trucks over there and those neighbors were outside in their pajamas and housecoats. But I saw no flames, the only red flickering glow was the fire truck lights and no major smoke coming from their house. Everyone went back inside after the fire truck left, so thank God their Christmas wasn't ruined! But ever since then, I keep looking at my more skittish kitties thinking "Maybe you'd be better off in a home where you're the only cat someone needs to grab in an emergency! Maybe I should just keep the chill ones who didn't run away and only have 2 or 3 cats who can fit in one big carrier instead of 6 in two carriers. That would just be too much on foot and I don't have a car!" I love all my kitties and the thought of what could have been had it been more than a SCARE....what some people amd their pets are currently experiencing....I might have had to just leave my door and window screens open and hope the scared, hiding kitties I couldn't grab would at least be brave enough to run or jump outside and get their Homeward Bound on or something. I understand now more than ever how some pets get left behind: nobody WANTS to, but sometimes you're left in a traumatizing predicament you never could have imagined. It can be hard enough to get a terrified child to safety, but at least the child can usually understand words and situations....animals don't have a clue what's going on and don't understand too many human words, so they just run to a familiar place where they feel safe and hidden, putting up terrible fights and leaping out of our arms before we can get them in the carrier... there comes a point where you HAVE to gtfo and feel terrible about leaving your beloved friend behind, praying they'll be okay.

The whole mountain is on fire, coming quickly down towards you. It's surreal because as terrible, and terrifying as it looks, the fire is hypnotic. Time stands still for that split second. Omg we’re neighbors! I live one block away from Runyon . I get you because I feel this will take me a long time to get over it. It’s a trauma. I also feel guilty. We left but we came back to a home . Many didn’t and that makes feel so guilty. I haven’t slept and every time I hear sirens or helicopters I start to feel sick to my stomach. When i saw fire on the hill I couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked like a scene from a movie. I saw people running and one person left his car and ran down the streets. It was a very scary situation. I feel horrible for all those people who lost their home. This is so heartbreaking. 😢

I am truly sorry that you have been through this horrible experience. I would not wish it on anyone. You, your animals, the people and animals are in my prays. My heart goes out to all the people and animals affected, it is heartbreaking. These experiences humble you because it reminds us that no matter how big a human ego is, we are nothing compared to outside forces and the force of nature. I truly hope that this is an awakening and a reminder to put our eyes on the homeless. And I am not just talking about those who lost their homes to the fire, but those who were already homeless before this fire, they have lost their homes perhaps not to the fire but for other reasons and they are living on the streets exposed to danger and inclement weather for longer. I think that the problem of homelessness has been a long-standing and huge problem that is growing in California, and unfortunately not enough has been done to solve it. I hope his become a new movement in Los Angeles and California, and the people and the community act together to reverse this trend and problem, to help the homeless that many times had been forgotten. And when I talk about homeless I dont talk only about people but also animals.
