If you read the instructions that came with the verifier, it clearly points out that clad coins will test positive for silver. The reason for this is when silver was phased out the mint had to find a coinage metal with a conductivity similar to silver so they can be used in vending machines without modifying the machines. They are easily detected by looking at the edge of the coin.

While you and I both know this fact many people do not which was the reason for this video. I hope with your input here it helps those that may not know to understand they should not rely on just one test.. GD

People need to understand that while the Sigma machines are some of the best tools on the market for authenticating precious metal coins and bars, they are just tools. They are NOT magic wands nor 100% infallible in all situations. You must read the owners manual completely to be sure you are operating the machine correctly and so that you will fully comprehend its strengths and weaknesses and peculiarities. Anyone regularly dealing in the buying and selling of precious metal coins and bars will own a VARIETY of testing tools including scales, calipers, ringers, reference books describing the particulars of specific authentic coins and bars, guides to detecting counterfeits, etc. With time and experience a seasoned stacker or dealer will become quite adept at detecting counterfeits. The more you do this, the better you get at it. But you cannot get cocky and lazy and start thinking you can tell “by sight and holding it in my hand” if it’s real or not. China is turning out a lot of very convincing fakes and you must take your time and carefully verify everthing.

Hope this video sheds some light on the recent test I did that gave a false reading on a clad coin.

Well, nothing is perfect. But the Sigma for the speed and I would suggest you use the larger probes as they do provide a deeper reading than the onboard sensor.

Thanks for stopping by to watch and comment, I do appreciate it. They have come out with several models that are higher priced, If they came out with a lower priced one I would be amazed since they seem to be selling the current models with no problem.

I’m not understanding the reason for switching to the mode that shows a numerical resistivity value? The standard mode on the sigma is giving you a visual representation of acceptable resistivity with a bracket and bar based on the type of metal you select. Whereas this mode is just giving you a number which you then have to determine the acceptable range on your own.
@GDSavingThePast6 ай бұрын
Thank you for stopping by to watch and share your thoughts, I do appreciate it. It appears that copper on the standard mode can test as silver but when you switch over to the density mode it will have a different numerical reading from .999 silver or sterling silver so the company is recommending that you do both readings to confirm what the metal is. The verifier is only one step you need to take towards verification. Other non-destructive tests should also be performed.

I have six Morgan dollars that pass the tests, size dimensions, density, weight, ping and magnetic. They cannot pass the Sigma Analytics. They ring when dropped on a flat surface and every thing looks good. I am at a loss. I guess all that is left is to cut one but I hate to ruin a coin and if it is tungsten then I would not know from cutting either. Do you have any thoughts on how I can resolved this issue?
@GDSavingThePast4 ай бұрын
Don't cut one open, I would hate to see you ruin a good coin. Based on what you mentioned there are only 2 possibilities here, it is either a genuine Morgan or a fake done with the tungsten core. Check out thecoinlock.com, This man invented a very affordable tester to check for tungsten cores and I have tested it and it works. Not sure if he still gives a discount on his items but mention to him that I sent you there and ask if he has a discount code you can use. Good luck and let me know how things go.

I also had this issue with morgan dollars on my sigma pro recently. I found some information on their website saying that they might have used old dirtier silver from the 19th century when pressing some of them and if it tests good on pre-1900 option they are good to go.

If they pass density size dimension ping and magnetic test. There is near zero chance that it is fake. Pretty sure ive never seen any fakes that pass all of the tests.

Thank you so much for the mention my friend. That’s wonderful how quickly Will go back to you! That first fake silver round looks exactly like one I bought a few months ago 😬 Which company would you highly recommend buying silver and gold from?
@GDSavingThePast6 ай бұрын
Thanks for stopping by to watch, I do appreciate it. I gladly gave you a shoutout because I most likely would not have contacted the company if you didn't mention it my friend. As for who I recommend, My first suggestion is to get to know any local coin and bullion dealers in your area. Building a relationship on a local level may be a real plus for getting a deal or something special. I have always been my own dealer so I don't use any of the online dealers but there are a number of good ones that are very trustworthy. To name just a few you may want to check out JM Bullion. Apmex, SD Bullion, Provident Metals & Scottsdale mint to get started. The amount you pay over spot price will vary by the type of item you buy, the company you buy from and any specials that a company may have so it is best to shop them all before you make a purchase. If you have any other questions I am always here to help plus you can always contact me at gdsavingthepast@gmail .com

@@GDSavingThePast that is all very great information and advice, thank you so much. I’ve been buying my silver from a local business that’s been around for 40 years so I feel pretty confident, but I’ve been learning a lot from your videos, so thank you for sharing you knowledge.

the thin copper plate is just too thin, that's why the reading it 1.54... try using wand? or put the cal disc below it? Is this in the manual? now i have to cut all my poured bars to see if they are copper inside....???!!!!!
@GDSavingThePast6 ай бұрын
Thanks for stopping by to watch and comment, I do appreciate it. No don't cut open your bars, simply do the readings that I showed here. Silver and copper were in different numerical ranges and the brass was way higher. Get a few pieces of copper bars or rounds, a few .999 silver bars or rounds that you know are good and run some readings on your unit to have a base line of what is good and what may be fake.
@viperviperpiro6 ай бұрын
@@GDSavingThePast I was joking when i said to cut the silver bars... i just tried a few samples test on my poured silver bars and coin, mostly falls with the 1.65-1.71 range, with most at 1.66-1.67. Same for the 99.99 silver coins, at 1.65-1.67 too .

Measuring specific gravity is unnecessary if the coin has the correct weight, diameter and thickness. This already confirms the specific gravity.
@GDSavingThePast2 ай бұрын
Thanks for stopping in to watch and comment. Unfortunately weight, diameter and thickness are not always useful nor is a specific gravity test since Tungsten and gold have almost identical specific gravity. The Chinese are famous for making pretty remarkable fakes with tungsten
