This video is a beginner friendly tutorial for a one piece, boxed cushion cover. This updated video is the clarify any questions about your measurements that some had from the first video. You can view the first video here • BEST DIY boxed cushion...
The formulas explained in this video are here for your to reference back to, but please be sure to watch first to understand what I am referring to:
The longest measurement is "Depth (x2) + Height (x2) + 1""
The width measurement is "Width + Height + 1""
Your boxed corners on the raw ends will be 1/2 of your cushion height from both raw edges (an even square cut out)
Your boxed corners on the folded end will be 1/2" of your cushion height from the raw edge, but only 1/2 of your cushion height MINUS 1/2" from the folded edge (you will have a rectangle cut out)
These formulas will work for any square or rectangular cushion.

This is a most excellent video - you made it look so simple and this method is genius! I had eight couch cushions to cover, and they weren't the same height front to back, but I used your exact instructions with your measurement formulas on the different sized box corners and it turned out great - thank you, I didn't think I could do it but you made it easy!

Just found this updated video. I followed your original video to make bench cushions. Only one corner by the zipper was a tad off, but I don’t think it will matter. I’ve never sewed before and can’t believe how well I did. Very satisfying. Thank you for sharing your expertise!!!

I just finished making a futon cover using your first video last night and thought I would review the video again, just for memory sake, when I suddenly ran across your new updated video. Your first video was very good. My only complaint was that it was not in landscape mode so this video is much easier to watch, and very instructive as well. Thank you for taking the time to teach us all how to make cushion covers you are the best!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have done no serious sewing for about 20 years (I used to have something on the go all the time) and having come to live in Spain with a new sewing machine I thought I should start with something simple. But until I found your video I was really struggling with what I thought should be really straightforward. I was on the point of giving up and hiding the material in the back of my wardrobe. You explained things so clearly - and after having watched a couple of time I basically did a "sew along" (with pauses) for the first one - which looks great. Half way through the second one now on my own!! Has really inspired me. Again thank you!

Big thank you for your tutorial. I used a sewing machine for the second time in my life but your instructions were clear and easy to follow. I had to make 4 cushions covers and after checking the first one I have noticed it is a little too big (all dimensions double checked🙂). I subtracted 3/4" in both directions and the other three covers came out perfect. Can it be because of of the zipper? I used bigger size than in the tutorial. Thank you again!

I just finished one cover using a Coats & Clark Sport zipper that is actually for jackets, so only has the tails at one end and a straight cut for the other. I only realized that after I'd started sewing it in which was not fun. They were the only zippers I could find in 30 inches at the time. What type of zipper did you use for this video? It looks similar. I've got 5 more cushion covers to make and don't know whether to plod along or return zippers and look for another type. Thank you I also had watched another video before finding yours but she did not have the tip you mentioned about the zipper, specifically the tails towards the outside so they would be hidden in the seam allowances. I've resewn the zipper now but would like to know what type you did use. Thank you. Jeanne

Unfortunately, I made the same mistake and grabbed jacket zippers. It definitely makes it a little more bulky, but does the trick if necessary.

I love this tutorial! I didn't think this could be that easy-- but I believe I can do this. But-- my problem is that my cushions are LARGER than what you are using and I can't find fabric in a wide enough width to do the one solid piece in the direction that the pattern goes. I have found a print that I LOVE-- but it's only wide enough to do my back cushions-- but not my seat cushions! :-( Any chance you have covered larger cushions and can explain how you do this if you can't have just one piece to work from?

Hi! I’m so glad it was helpful! My best suggestion for this situation would be to use a strip of fabric the width of your larger cushions plus the seam allowance on each side, then add a strip of fabric on the left and right long enough to make up the difference. You will have the seams on the edges, but the only other option unless you use a different method would be to sew two strips together down the center if you don’t mind a seam. I hope this helps!

My cushion measures 40 x 15. That is the size foam +3 inch height of the foam. My measurements were 37 for the depth and 44 for the length. It is not long enough and is too deep. Any suggestions that I might do to fix this problem as it is quite expensive for the foam and fabric. 20:42

Why is my cushion cover too small? My cushion measures 40 x 15 and the foam is 3 inches I cut the depth to 37 and the width to 44 is that correct? It is not long enough and too wide. Any help would be greatly appreciated as materials and foam are quite expensive.

Could you help me to figure out cutting measurements for a chaise cushion? At the foot portion it’s 30 inches wide and the seat portion is 25 inches wide, and the whole cushion is 50 inches deep. It’s 6inches in height. I’m not sure how to transition the seat size.
@MapleandSunshineBoutique
@MapleandSunshineBoutique 10 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, you will not be able to use this method since the front and back of your cushion are different widths. You can create a template using your existing cushion and use the same measurements, but the center of your fabric (the front) will be wider and the ends (where it meets in the back at the zipper) will be more narrow.

If I sew close the back instead of using a zipper does that change the measurement at all?
@MapleandSunshineBoutique
@MapleandSunshineBoutique 10 ай бұрын
It doesn’t, but you need to be able to insert your cushion. If you put your cushion in and hand sew it shut after, just press the 1/2” seam allowance to the inside and use a ladder stitch to close. Hope that helps!

I’m making one today. If my cushion is only one inch thick and my corner cuts are 1/2 inch would my seam allowance also be 1/2”?
@sandyquispe4746
@sandyquispe4746 Жыл бұрын
Nevermind I figured out that it would still be 1/2”. Also my front corner cuts would be 1/3 of the thickness of my cushion which calculates to 11/32 of an inch taking into account my side seams of course.

I would not recommend this for such a thin cushion, but if so you would need to adjust your seam allowance to 1/4”

I did my cushion from the first tutorial. I am very pleased with your teaching and demonstration. My one issue is getting a smooth finish at both ends of the zipper. Oh, that part about sticking the zipper out and not in was not shown in the first video. I think that may be the answer, yes?
@MapleandSunshineBoutique
@MapleandSunshineBoutique 2 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but unfortunately the zipper won’t be exactly smooth with this method. There are several other methods that have a more professional finish, but I wanted to keep this tutorial for one piece of fabric and as beginner friendly as possible. You could press the fabric flat on top of your zipper and just sew across perpendicular to the end of the zipper to flatten that area.
