Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have done no serious sewing for about 20 years (I used to have something on the go all the time) and having come to live in Spain with a new sewing machine I thought I should start with something simple. But until I found your video I was really struggling with what I thought should be really straightforward. I was on the point of giving up and hiding the material in the back of my wardrobe. You explained things so clearly - and after having watched a couple of time I basically did a "sew along" (with pauses) for the first one - which looks great. Half way through the second one now on my own!! Has really inspired me. Again thank you!

I just finished making a futon cover using your first video last night and thought I would review the video again, just for memory sake, when I suddenly ran across your new updated video. Your first video was very good. My only complaint was that it was not in landscape mode so this video is much easier to watch, and very instructive as well. Thank you for taking the time to teach us all how to make cushion covers you are the best!

I just finished one cover using a Coats & Clark Sport zipper that is actually for jackets, so only has the tails at one end and a straight cut for the other. I only realized that after I'd started sewing it in which was not fun. They were the only zippers I could find in 30 inches at the time. What type of zipper did you use for this video? It looks similar. I've got 5 more cushion covers to make and don't know whether to plod along or return zippers and look for another type. Thank you I also had watched another video before finding yours but she did not have the tip you mentioned about the zipper, specifically the tails towards the outside so they would be hidden in the seam allowances. I've resewn the zipper now but would like to know what type you did use. Thank you. Jeanne

Unfortunately, I made the same mistake and grabbed jacket zippers. It definitely makes it a little more bulky, but does the trick if necessary.

Big thank you for your tutorial. I used a sewing machine for the second time in my life but your instructions were clear and easy to follow. I had to make 4 cushions covers and after checking the first one I have noticed it is a little too big (all dimensions double checked🙂). I subtracted 3/4" in both directions and the other three covers came out perfect. Can it be because of of the zipper? I used bigger size than in the tutorial. Thank you again!

Both your original boxed cushion tutorial plus this updated version are wonderful. I have watched so many videos, and your videos make the most sense to my brain by far! Thank you!! However, I'm struggling because my fabric is only 54" wide and my cut material needs to be 57x57 according to your formulas. I need to add a seam somewhere to get to 57", but I'm struggling with the math and where to add the seam so it doesn't show. Do you have any other videos or recommendations? Thanks!

If I sew close the back instead of using a zipper does that change the measurement at all?
@MapleandSunshineBoutique
@MapleandSunshineBoutique Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t, but you need to be able to insert your cushion. If you put your cushion in and hand sew it shut after, just press the 1/2” seam allowance to the inside and use a ladder stitch to close. Hope that helps!

Great video and instructions but I'm pulling my hair out over the zipper. As mentioned, unless your zipper is wide, even staying as close to the zipper as possible I can't get the half inch seam allowance. You did mention this. My question though is when you do the side seams do you use a half inch seam allowance and then taper it in when you get close to zipper to match that? That is hanging me up. It doesn't seem to be an issue for anyone else so I'm wondering what I'm missing. It seems no matter what, it's going to mess up how the cover fits. Thank you.

Hi there. From making one of these myself (I’m pretty new to sewing), using this video as my guide, I don’t think you need the 1/2 in seam allowance when you are sewing in the zipper. In fact, you want to get as close to the zipper teeth aa possible when you sew it in. If I understand your comment. There is no need to taper the sides. Just use the half inch all the way down the side. But remember to already have the ends of zipper (with the zipper closed, both ends of the actual zipper working parts) clipped/pinned so it’s out & away from itself. Then you start the side seams with a half inch seam allowance all the way down to that clip as close as you can get, leave your needle down, lift the presser foot, turn it 90 degrees & sew out and back a couple times…but stay within the half inch area. The tail pieces on both ends of the zipper, the part that is just fabric, should already be sewn up at an angle which will keep them tucked away once you sew the side seams. I had trouble at first because I couldn’t visualize it and it felt like it wouldn’t work out. But if you go slow it will work out. Might take a couple tries to get it close & turn the fabric enough to get it right. But you can do it. Hope this helps. Though as I’m reading back over this, it might not make sense to anyone other than myself! Good luck!

@@unclesamsniece2064 Thank you so much for kindly taking the time. It's been a bit now so I'm not following exactly. Mine turned out okayish but I wasn't happy with it. I needed to make a couple more, and I just didn't get it so searched for another method and was able to use as that as my zipper wasn't going around the sides. In that one you put the zipper in earlier, which worked better for me personally and by the third one I was happy with it. I'm sure I could have eventually figured it out by this method but I was frustrated and no one else seemed to have an issue with it so I figured I was totally missing something. I loved the video though and except for the zipper for me it was otherwise very clear. Ultimately I combined things from this video and the other one I found. Thanks again for taking the time. I appreciate it.

My cushion measures 40 x 15. That is the size foam +3 inch height of the foam. My measurements were 37 for the depth and 44 for the length. It is not long enough and is too deep. Any suggestions that I might do to fix this problem as it is quite expensive for the foam and fabric. 20:42

Nevermind I figured out that it would still be 1/2”. Also my front corner cuts would be 1/3 of the thickness of my cushion which calculates to 11/32 of an inch taking into account my side seams of course.

I would not recommend this for such a thin cushion, but if so you would need to adjust your seam allowance to 1/4”

Could you help me to figure out cutting measurements for a chaise cushion? At the foot portion it’s 30 inches wide and the seat portion is 25 inches wide, and the whole cushion is 50 inches deep. It’s 6inches in height. I’m not sure how to transition the seat size.
@MapleandSunshineBoutique
@MapleandSunshineBoutique Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, you will not be able to use this method since the front and back of your cushion are different widths. You can create a template using your existing cushion and use the same measurements, but the center of your fabric (the front) will be wider and the ends (where it meets in the back at the zipper) will be more narrow.

I love this tutorial! I didn't think this could be that easy-- but I believe I can do this. But-- my problem is that my cushions are LARGER than what you are using and I can't find fabric in a wide enough width to do the one solid piece in the direction that the pattern goes. I have found a print that I LOVE-- but it's only wide enough to do my back cushions-- but not my seat cushions! :-( Any chance you have covered larger cushions and can explain how you do this if you can't have just one piece to work from?
@MapleandSunshineBoutique
@MapleandSunshineBoutique 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I’m so glad it was helpful! My best suggestion for this situation would be to use a strip of fabric the width of your larger cushions plus the seam allowance on each side, then add a strip of fabric on the left and right long enough to make up the difference. You will have the seams on the edges, but the only other option unless you use a different method would be to sew two strips together down the center if you don’t mind a seam. I hope this helps!

Possibly, but unfortunately the zipper won’t be exactly smooth with this method. There are several other methods that have a more professional finish, but I wanted to keep this tutorial for one piece of fabric and as beginner friendly as possible. You could press the fabric flat on top of your zipper and just sew across perpendicular to the end of the zipper to flatten that area.
