Just my two cents but OP should send one last message to the EX. That being the hateful message her friend sent with his response to her and her friends then 5 year old response when she is called out on her BS. Seriously, he needs to tell this lady that her problem isn't her past. It is her toxic friends. She isn't going to be happy if she allows her friends to be toxic to her male SO. He should also comment that maybe those friends are the very reason her first marriage fell apart. Maybe she needs to do some soul searching on the parts her friends and family have played in all of this with her EX. Tell her you are not bitter. You moved on long ago. Red flag went up immediately after reading, I have been in a similar position decades ago. I have no seen her in 37 years but occasionally she comes up in dreams or just random times. Similar thing happened to me. After the guy cheated on her twice (she had no kids with him) I sat her down and said that she needed to work on herself. Cause the next guy she gets with will have issues and that’ll hurt her more and if she dated me it’ll be out of comfort. And dating out of comfort and marrying like that is not worth it. She took my advice and went to college and the gym. Making herself better. Last year she came to me and asked me out after two years of working on herself and I told her I’ll think about it. That is some messed up s***. If I was in the same situation as the OP, I would've been asking some serious, probing questions about their marriage and why it went south. What kind of marriage did they have? Did she love him? Did she cheat on him? Does she still love him? The answers to those questions are far more important than what her friends/sister/family have to say. Because whatever feelings she "may" still have for the OP, they are superficial at best. I very briefly dated a girl like her in college as well. Fortunately, I saw the writing on the wall and didn't pursue it. Later, I found out through a mutual friend that I broke her heart. I was like wtf? We were never even serious or exclusive. So glad I dodged that bullet. But some men have over-sized egos and want a woman who literally grovels at their feet. But, respect begets respect, not the other way around. If I were the OP, I would tell the girl to grow a spine, ditch her family and friends and get some counseling, to seriously work on herself for at least a year. Like it or not, this chick is back on the market which is a hellish place for a post-wall divorcee with three kids.
