Updated EASIEST How to make Self Watering SIP Planter with 5 Gallon Bucket & Milk Jug PART ONE

Part 1: I have been using these for 3 years now and they are still working great! This is an updated video better explaining how to make the Self Watering Planter or SIP container from a 5 gallon bucket, milk jug, pvc pipe and nail! I put strawberries plants and tomato plants in mine! This works great for urban or on a smaller scale for indoor gardening! I keep your video as a guideline for next year. SoCal here. I have purchased 5 buckets and 24" pcv pieces. 2 pepper plants will transfer and the rest will be tomatoes. Thank you!

Hate to be that guy but this isn't a self watering system, it's just a hydroponic system. Firstly, if the roots eventually reach down into the bottle when you're no longer waterering from above, your soil won't get wet and the roots will bypass all the nutrients in the soil. You may as well for go all the soil and simply have a hydroponic system. The idea of 'wicking' is to slow release the water into the soil so that the plant constantly uses the water and still gets nutrients from the soil. It's the capillary action that you want with a wick that feeds the soil/roots without water logging the lower half of the container. Your system will work amazingly with a rope wick coming out from where you drilled the holes

I don't know how valid it is that some people put nails into their garden to give "Iron" to the plants, but if it's a real thing, then you also solved that problem with this setup! And it seems like you must be using an outdoor nail since it didn't have any rust on it.

how many litres of water is in the milk jug and how long does it last before you need to refill it?

It's a gallon jug so about 3.8 liters. It would depend how thirsty of a plant you have in there and whether it's in a lot of direct sunlight. I usually try to check on it every few days or twice a week if I'm busy.

Yes this would work for eggplant. I've seen it used for cucumbers. Check out Gardening with Leon.

What size pipe did you use for the milk jug

Same size as the milk jug, I believe it’s an inch.

I actually don't remember the exact size of the pipe I used but Sharazod is correct that as long as it fits inside the mouth of the milk jug then it should work great!

May I know the diameter of the pvc pipe ? I am guessing 1 inch ?

Yes I believe they were about 1 inch. It does not have to be exact as long as it fits inside the milk jug opening.

This assumes the roots grow in to the holes in jug

I've never had a plant whose roots didn't dig down in search of water, but I'd be curious of what other people's experiences are.

hi there do you think i could grow marijuana in it? cos it can have long roots!!! and it needs nutrients so how would i check it or change it-i mean water

I would think long roots would help it reach the water better. In the set up I have there is no way to really change the water though. You can only just add fresh water/nutrients.
