Today we converted the Kid's old Power Wheels trucks to run on 18v Ryobi Batteries. We used the adapter from terrafirmatechnology.com linked below.
ATTENTION !!! Please ensure you add an inline 30 amp fuse or breaker. We did not, and we quickly learned that the batteries overheat and potentially catch fire.

We took and cut the plug and put large alligator clamps and put a $25 12v lawnmower battery in ours and they last for a couple hrs, just the recharge time is longer than the lithium. Great video. 👍

We started using motorcycle batteries originally. Worked pretty good for about a year but the Lead-Acid batteries dont like getting ran down to zero and being recharged.

Next time use a relay because then you don’t have to reset anything because it limits the power by itself

Awesome! Thanks for the tips. Your batteries died/fried, so mine could live.

How is it that the 30A breaker (which never tripped) prevented the batteries from getting too hot at the connection?
@NOVICEAmerican

Just a precaution but they did still get warm. I later added a voltage regulator and it helped a lot.

This is why I came to the comments... doesn't make sense with just a large breaker that never tripped... your regulator is probably what did it.

I did this and mine trips the breaker literally after 10 seconds. I don't get it. I even wired motors directly

I later added a speed contoller from Amazon. Maybe that will help.

We did the conversion, and the jeep says the battery is low, but it's not. Everything works but driving. The replacement battery is 18V 1.5Ah the one installed was a 12v 14Ah. Any suggestions? The Jeep worked just before the swap.

I wouldn't know without tinkering with it. Im no expert. Not intended to be a how to video. We just documented the process of converting ours for entertainment. A great resource is the "modified power wheels" facebook group. Lots of good info and smart people willing to help troubleshoot.

1.5Ah isn't enough to power the motors for long, if at all. Consider using a larger Ah battery, or wiring two identical 18v batteries in PARALLEL, definitely not in SERIES. Also, ensure your wiring is appropriate guage, 14 is ideal, 16 should still be safe, 18 could start a fire depending on voltage, length and temperature.

2 questions. 1, how long does it run on a 4ah battery? And 2, when the breaker trips or fuse blows, how long do you wait to run it again?
@NOVICEAmerican
@NOVICEAmerican Жыл бұрын
We get a solid 20-30 min depending how high it is turned up. We usually wait a min or two but im no expert.

If you don't monitor how low the voltage gets you are just going to damage the batteries lithium batteries don't like to be drained to low around 15/16 volts you will have to watch it carefully or install a low voltage cutoff.

Ryobi is actually the only brand to have the LVP built into the battery, every other brand puts it in the tools.

I put an 18v ryobi battery in my car and it keeps turning on and off despite having a full charge. Is there any way i can fix this?
@NOVICEAmerican
@NOVICEAmerican 3 жыл бұрын
Could be the Ryobi Batteries having a thermo resistor that cuts power when it gets hot. Because it us drawing a lot of amps. Also, could be your motors. Can find replacements pretty easy on amazon. Its tough, with all the different model power wheels its hard to be 100%. I have seen some people add a voltage regulator and even a volt meter. Check out the Modified Power Wheels facebook group. I cant recommend them enough. Very cool ideas and very helpful community.

Will the battery charge when I connect the ac adapter that comes with my hot wheels or do I have to remove the battery and put it on the charger
@NOVICEAmerican
@NOVICEAmerican 2 жыл бұрын
I have no Idea. I used it this way so I could recharge it with my normal Ryobi battery charger and have multiple batteries charged on hand. Also, we can have one charging while they drive around using another.

There are so many different generation and model ryobi batteries and so many different electric motors, gears, etc in the different power wheels. Only way to find out for sure is to test it. Im no expert. Just documented what we did while converting ours.

Maybe not a great idea to run a 12v motor with an 18v battery. Looks like he might be getting a little more power out of them but it must be burning up those motors. I have a plan to take on a similar project to use two 18v ryobi batteries in series to run a 36v mower and scooter. Has anyone tried this?

@NOVICEAmerican
@NOVICEAmerican 2 жыл бұрын
Big ones were going 20-30 min depending on how hard they ride. Small one 15-20ish. They are much faster but the bonus is not the length of battery life as much as you being able to have one charging while they drive and switch them when it dies. So they can go pretty much continuously.

So I did this mod and it went great, kid loves it. Have a problem though it seems like the speed fluctuates, sometimes when depressing the pedal it will suddenly go much faster then slow back down. What would be the cause?

You could need a voltage regulator / speed controller. It's hard to have a universal solution because there are so many different types of vehicles. A great resource is the Modified Power Wheels facebook group. Tons of smart people there always willing to help answer more in depth questions.
