Around here the small native bees really like the fennel flowers. We also have two swallowtail caterpillars that are chowing down on the fennel foliage pretty good. Glad to see the Salavatski is doing well. We put in a ~4' tree in a sheltered spot this spring. I don't really expect to get fruit any time soon. It's fairly ornamental and I can't wait until it starts flowering.

With your love for plants it seems you need to move to bigger property maybe move up a zone or two also 😆

That’s sugar cane! I’m growing it myself. It’s in the grass family 😀

I was hoping to see more from the sugarcane! I guess it will take a while longer for the crown to expand. Was it just the one spike coming up out of all that you planted?? Thanks for the update!

Amazing garden! Just curious how the figs in the larger containers are doing? And the pots with 2 fig trees? Thanks!

I think you do have polinators in your area. I've read some things to know if the can be grown here in the Netherlands and though I couldn't find a full answer, I found out that bees and butterfly's like the flowers. Since bumblebees fly when temperatures rise over 5°c there are probably some bees that fly in your climate.

Ross, you reminded me of this question when you talked about having a BM in a 10gal. You seem to mostly use 10-15gal pots. How often do you need to root prune to keep them in that size? Also, should root pruning only be done when dormant?

any tips on what to do with figs & pomegranates in pots in winter? I'm also 7A in DC. Not sure if I should prune them or not, whether to keep in house (~70 degrees) or in an unheated unattached garage (gets just as cold as outside but no wind/frost), artificial light requirements, etc. Thanks so much!

Sugarcane is not like bamboo. It grows more like corn or like Sorghum
@lalamomo31885 жыл бұрын
Imo, maybe the sugar cane and pomegranate need more sunlight, warmer temperature, and for the cane is they're more like corn than bamboo, and here in tropical country the sugar cane were planted in open field or something like rice field, And some recommendation, you need to try some fig leaf tea it's amazing 👍

is that "sugar cane" sorghum? on the topic, I intend to grow sorghum where I'm at. I guess I bettah get cracking, hoeing out the lawn, mowing low where I don't want to hoe, pregerming, and also planting cicers as a companion perhaps.

what variety of pomegranate?

I have a crepe myrtle in my front yard that may have been planted when the house was built 18 years ago. I read last night that pomegranate would graft onto it. That's intrigued me, as the rootstock is fully developed and might speed the process of getting fruit. I am also in Zone 7. So, wondering what type of pomegranate would be best.

How are you in zone 7A, when Pennsylvania's zones are 5 or 6 ? I live in Pa too, and I'm in zone 5.

Ross, don't give upon the poms. I am 30 miles north of you in Frenchtown, NJ . and I am getting encouraging fruiting both in an unheated polytunnel and outdoors. The trick is to limit both nitrogen and water during the flowering period. If you were getting female flowers water may be the issue.

You need a hardy variety in 7B. That's propagated from cutting. Not seed. Look for a Salavatski tree.

Any advice on how to deal with fig sour rot?
@slipknot95maggot5 жыл бұрын
Yea your sugarcane looks just like mine. Hopefully I'll have enough time in the season for it to harden off and actually get a nice cane in. But I also started it late with my move, so if nothing else if I can keep it alive for next year it'll have more time to develop... But yea, pretty sure you're fine. Just too young to have enough sugars built up for all that. Prolly worthwhile for both of us to listen to that other dude in the comments and plant them on a higher mound in a hotter space//keep it in a pot. Mine is loosing a bit of sun to a tomato that got too cray xp I only half mounded mine 'cuz I was low on soil in the days immediately following my move

Hey Alex! I live in 7A, too, and there's actually a lot of big fig trees that grow year-round here. There's one (facing south, growing against a brick wall) that is probably 25-30 feet tall ...

Don't water this much tall pomegranate tree. If ull water more ull get either no fruit or busted fruit.
