omg, the mix of realistic water shading with the cartoony foam texture is so good. it could stand to be a bit bluer, but its already tickling my brain with how pretty it is.

This looks so awesome! I think something that could add way more life to this map honestly is adding more buildings, making it less of an island in the middle of water. I wanna see more Isle Delfino landmarks spread around, make it feel like more of a landmass and town with life

I'm a blender artist myself. Nothing professional but I'd say I'm pretty decent. And man? You make making custom tracks seem so easy. I'm blown away knowing how much work and love you have to put into these to get them even close to decent! You do incredible work, keep it up.

On the mechanics of the drawbridge: it looks like you came to the conclusion that the bars needed to move back by assuming that the rope would be lifted straight up. Its actually the _rope_ that needs to be "pulled back" in order to stay connected to the same point on both the bars and the bridge.
@Jmathington4 ай бұрын
This looks really really good! For updates I think you can 1. Change the park into a more accurate forest, as having another Delfina statue there kind of takes away from the twin square’s statue, and 2. Making the buildings more 3D I think could go a long way. Mainly just the ledges under the windows and the “roofs” above them (not sure of the technical name). Other than that I think it looks great Edit: I realized that if they fit, the buildings from Toad Harbor would work very well
@nicrule44244 ай бұрын
If anyone cares, the meshes are separated by material because that's the way the GPU wants that data. GPUs 'generally' want every vertex to belong to 1 material and have 1 set of normal vectors. This means any vertex used by 2 faces with different normal vectors or materials must be duplicated so it has one copy for each face. Blender just lets you merge vertices because it's way easier to work that way. Also, I finally looked up his closing music. "Adventure Time: Party in the Clouds"
@FloraVeebee4 ай бұрын
I didn't expect to see you do another one of these so soon. In terms of coming back to update more things, I think you should try to remodel the buildings at some point. I personally don't think that using normal maps and stuff will save dated textures lol, so redoing them completely seems like the right move. I think taking some inspiration from the buildings in Toad Harbor would be good for this track, since not only is the architecture similar (or at least, I think so), but the buildings in Toad Harbor are very vibrant as well, compared to the many dead-looking buildings in both the DS and Wii renditions of Delfino Square. I also think some islands in the background would be nice too. I wish you luck!

Not sure about the whole “Blender removing features” thing since from my experience with I believe 4.2, they haven’t. A lot of things have just been reorganized like the modifiers in the modifier tab. I think your issue with not being able to change the shadow blending mode comes from using EEVEE’s ray tracing, since on regular EEVEE and Cycles it shows up for me no problem. It seems flipping the normals did the job anyway, but it’s worth noting that Blender generally doesn’t remove features, just renames or moves them. Why this is, I have no idea, but it’s worth keeping in mind. Same goes for EEVEE ray tracing, which makes things oddly different for materials.
@saturnmunchies4 ай бұрын
an easier way to get an object to not render shadows would be to go to Object Properties (the orange box) and then go to Visibility>Ray Visibility> and uncheck Shadow These videos are also super fun and I'm so excited to see more! I've done some very similar stuff before myself with Mario Kart it's a blast!

It would be really cool to see the buildings remodeled a bit to give them more depth. That would probably make remapping the textures a lot of work so I totally get if you don’t end up doing that, it would just be cool to see. Also all the changes you made in this video were super sick! It’s crazy how this was only done in a week!

To answer your question on what could be improved, I'm gonna say what ya already know. The building textures are a nice placeholder, but I feel like you should put more work into them since they line large parts of the track, and racers get really close to them. Great work on the track thus far. I love seeing the glow ups you do for each track.

I like the idea of the middle area being a park, and i do like seeing the statue over the wall, but i reaaaly miss those autumnal trees, they are just my favorite type of tree and they help add to the warm autumn colors and earthy tones the track had. Maybe combine both ideas and model a small forest park back there? That would help the track feel like a real place and help the tracks identity, and you could even add a gate to the brick wall that surrounds that area as a way of showing how anybody would get to the park in the first place.

I love your mk videos so much! Me personally, when you land from the drawbridge, to the right there are the Mario kart advertisements, then just an empty space. I would love to see a small sidewalk up there, or something to fill the empty space. I would also add the benches and chairs and tables from peach gardens onto the side of that section, maybe in front of the advertisements. Also, the buildings could use a bit of work. They just look so outdated in my opinion. I would also add some Mario sunshine references to tie the whole Delfino setting together. Things like the painted red m’s on the walls, an updated version of the wall texture from sunshine, maybe even the volcano in the background. If you’re looking for any more ideas, Croco 64 has a video where he created a custom track of delfino square and it looks terrific. I would recommend you watch it. Hope I helped in some way, I can’t wait to see what you do with this. Whatever you decide to fix, I know it will be incredible and worth the wait (however long it is) ❤

What you should update? Well, besides the grass and the shading problem earlier, you should absolutely add alternate routes similar to Mario Kart Tour. Since the final and first turns of the track are blocked off, you can remove those barriers and be free to add whatever you want to the alternate route. Hills, buildings, trees, a seaside? All up to you. Then, the people who port your stuff in Mario Kart 8 can do the routing and have each lap a completely different route much like the tour tracks.

The "ray traced shadows" will always look a little "weird" because they are traced in screen space not world space so if something isn't in view it doesn't exist as far as the render is concerned this can somewhat be mitigated with light probes but that's just a fundamental flaw with EEVEE that is ultimately the price you pay to have it render so quickly. However I think the fact that you are calling it "ray traced shadows" and you demonstrated "no changing settings seems to help" by toggling the "shadows" shows you might be looking in the wrong section. I think what you want is under the "Fast GI Approximation" set the ray count and step count to a higher value like 8 or so should work. What you are noticing might be a denoise issue from a low sample count but I honestly have no idea since I have trouble recreating the problem you could try adding some light probes to the scene but for all I know it could be that you accidentally set the metallic in your shaders to 1 when it should be 0. If all else fails you can always just bite the bullet and use cylces if you are conservative with your settings and have a good enough gpu it won't take too long to render. I would suggest 16 samples and noise threshold shouldn't matter at such a low sample count and under light paths just select the "direct light" pre-set and finally use some sort of denoiser, optix is much faster but doesn't look as good and isn't even available if you aren't using an "RTX-GPU". If you are rendering thousands of frames these extremely low settings might be necessary but if you are only rendering a few still images you can go crazy high with some of the settings and just leave it overnight. I know it's subjective but personally I think even at lower settings Cycles looks significantly better than EEVEE and at least on my hardware it renders just as fast with these settings sometimes faster. I don't use EEVEE for anything but fast previews while I am working on lighting/materials, so I am having trouble even noticing your "problem" but as far as I can tell this was also an issue with the old EEVEE. Also a lot of what you are doing is easily done with the python integration look up "scripting for artists" for a good place to start; you shouldn't be renaming hundreds of UVs or connecting alpha channels by hand. It's like 2 or 3 hours of work one time to learn enough python to be able to do this sort of thing vs however many hours it takes for you to do things manually and I assume it's a lot.

I was confused on why you were using assets from other Nintendo games for some of the models becuase if I were you I would probably get models off of websites like sketchfab or blender kit which is an add on for blender. Most models are free and are also copyright free. Awesome work btw, if I could change one thing about this, I would probably make the textures parallax becuase right now the road is flat and super unrealistic and it’s the same for a couple other textures, it’s as simple as adding a height map or making your own procedural textures which is easy with a tutorial very editable and very fun.
