With so many kaiju having flip-flopped between hero and villain over the years, it's nice to know that there was one that was consistently shown to be either sympathetic or outright heroic from start to finish :)

Mothra is benevolent... I can just imagine Mothra in the movie going “sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry” as she accidentally kills people.

This movie is decent. Needs to be watched at least once for the sake of context. But the best part of this movie too me was always the way they treated Mothra in their first ever encounter with her. In all of the later films everyone kinda sees Mothra and goes, "Yay! It's Mothra!" For the most part anyways. In this movie every military involved is shooting at her and trying to kill her; and proven unable to do so, except at the very end. This is what sets this movie apart for me.

Not much destruction... Mothra sinks cruise ship kill's hundreds...
@rayarena8794 жыл бұрын
I know! I was thinking the same thing! In a sense Mothra is even more destructive than Godzilla, Godzilla is a slow lumbering creature who destroys everything in his path, but he is slow and lumbering and after taking three hours to walk 200 feet, he goes back into the water, whereas Mothra is a flying creature who creates such powerful hurricane force winds that she literally destroys all of New Kirk City as she flies at enormous speed and covers more grown than Godzilla could in a hundred years!

When diving into the Godzilla franchise for the first time in preparation for Godzilla King of Monsters, I expected the other monsters in the series to be one-off antagonists with surface level traits meant to service the message of their respective films, so when I found out that a few of them had their own dedicated movies I was surprised. What surprised me even more, though, was that not only was Godzilla not the only major Kaiju, but that he also wasn't the one with the deepest backstory or lore. Mothra's existence is incredibly well defined with a clear personality, despite the fact that she is rarely seen in the movie. Compared to this, many of the aspects involving Godzilla come off as arbitrary. This is the last thing I expected to find when I first decided to tackle this franchise.

You know, I was equally surprised too when I realised that Godzilla, Mothra and kaiju in general had all this deep lore, characterization and potential.

Furankî Sakai Who played the wonderfully comic "Senichiro 'Sen-chan' Fukuda" here in 'Mothra', went on to play the horrifically cruel "Yabu" in 'Shogun', who enjoyed boiling people alive. That's a Talented Actor. R.I.P.

Mosura is basically an allegory for an entity that protects Japan from the Western influence and expansion, or more directly from the American "rebuilding" of Japan post WWII. Kind of like a spirit that keeps old Japan alive in a peaceful way. If you dive a bit in Japanese collective subconscious, I guess :)

Still one of the iconic Toho movies of its time, for sure. Oddly enough, although Frankie Sakai was known for his comedic acting, in the TV miniseries adaptation of James Clavell's "Shogun" he played a very serious character, Kasigi Yabu--the first role I actually remember him from. The Ito twins...ohhhh, those heavenly voices! Beautiful girls with the voices of angels, and the "Sacred Springs" song from this movie chokes me up every time I hear it. Mothra happens to be one of my very favorite Toho kaiju--she even made a brief appearance, with a retooled version of the Shobijin, in my Pathfinder game last year since my game is set in the equivalent of feudal Japan.
