I am a PIPE FITTER/PIPE WELDER by profession so take my advice and read the instructions on your primer.You will see that you are supposed to apply the glue while the primer is still wet so that the PVC is still soft and makes the pipe and fittings fuse like a weld.MUCH STRONGER.

Being that you should definitely know more about this than me Bart, could you give me an idea of what to add to it to make it easier to hold. This looked like quite the chore for that guy to hold, with how long it is. Any idea for legs, or a grip, or handle, etc.? I have a few ideas but they all involve screwing something into the pipe, which would let air pressure out
@stewie831959
@stewie831959 3 жыл бұрын
@@smalltown89 I tweaked it a little and put valve stem in angled area in the 4 to 2 inch reducer. Not valve on end cap. I just set bottom on ground against side of foot and hold buy a tee I added to install pressure gauge then hold at a 45 degree angle and open valve. Also have a threaded barrel for for take down for easy transport. I wish I could include photos. Basically the same design but a few modifications. Ended up with about a four and half foot barrel so when in half I could get it in my car trunk easier.

Do you think abs cement would do the job?

Bart said it right, I'd like to add on these larger pipes sometimes it wants to pull itself off. So hold the fittings together for a few moments to let the glue adhere.

Great build. Couple of suggestions: 1.) Instead of gluing the barrel or even using threaded fittings, simply drill through the barrel joint and put a snug fitting rod or nail through there. This will prevent your bait from slipping all the way through into the chamber and will allow you to disconnect the barrel at the end of the day. 2.) When cementing PVC, you should always give it a twist as you seat the pieces together. These will fuse in such a way that the melted PVC will create much better joined micro ridges between the fused pieces giving you a stronger bond. (Oh, and the music is way too loud. Any way to re-record it?)

Made the straight shooter, pumped it to 100psi.didnt use primer. Used rubber air valve on end cap, plastic 2in air valve after chamber. Only waited till glue was dry. 10min sitting w/ 100psi BLEW The shrader valve out one end and the 4in reducer on other. Primer is a must and maybe a brads air valve and screw nut type shrader valve

Thanks for the video. Just built two ...one for me and one for co-worker. Made minor modification by using threaded barrel end and a threaded 1 1/2" ball valve. Reduced to 1 1/2 inch before valve with a 2" to 1 1/2 bushing. Added a tee with port for pressure gauge. Also drilled hole for valve stem in the the 4" to 2" reducer where it tapers towards the 2". I think it's better than in the end cap. I wish I could include photos. Not painted yet but it will be. Can send you pics if possible.

GREAT VIDEO! With the straight pipe try female adapter threaded on ball valve and male adapter threaded on the barrel. Since you don’t need air tight the threads won’t affect anything and you can unscrew the barrel for easy transport. Happy fishing!

Great video, thank you! I'm going to put one together this week. Two tips, if you don't mind. If no one has mentioned it yet. Apply your pvc cement while the primer is still wet. Your bond will be much stronger and more air/water tight. Also, have you tried muriatic acid to get your pavers clean? You can get it at HD or Lowes. Try a very small section as a test first, but it should work well. The acid etches down below the surface. Clean the stain with full strength acid. Then you will want to do your whole patio with a diluted mixture for a uniform look. Instructions should be on the box and of course....You Tube will certainly have a video or two.

Thanks Vincent! We corrected the wet/dry primer in the next video but you're absolutely right. For the pavers, didn't try the acid but we were able to replace the pavers with some leftovers from the patio install. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel!!

Finished my copy today. I bailed on the rubber valve stem you recommended as I could not get it to hold in the hole. Purchased a bolt-in stem and worked great. next step is to work on a better mold as using the standard PVC caps creates a lip that needs to thaw before you can release the ice.

The reducer shown here is clearly a drain rated fitting, not pressure rated. The endcap may also be a drain fitting. The pipe also appears to be thinner than pressure rated pipe. Look for pressure ratings printed on the pipe. Schedule 40 comes in both pressure and drain types. Use only pressure rated PVC and fittings for launchers. Be safe and happy launching.

A bit more protected. Yes a threaded adapter on the barrel to transport easier. Like a shotgun.. you do not need a long barrel. 36 inches? ALL connections should be rotated till you cannot rotate it anymore. Plumbers do this all the time. YES you did a GREAT job on video. Just some observations from a senior. Thanks.. JohnnyD.

First thank you both for taking the time to share your design . I am researching in hopes of making one . Your launcher is going to be my pattern but with one upgrade . The rubber schrader (tire) valve concerns me . It seems like a projectile ready pop . They make a heave duty steel valve that inserts from the back also however it has a steel flange that can't come out plus being steel it will last forever in a bait launcher . just thought I would throw in a nickel's worth of free advice . Likely something to do with a) the freezing process or b) how you’re removing the bait from the mold tube. Make sure it’s getting completely frozen before attempting to remove, and be careful when extracting from the mold. Don’t bang or tap it on anything to loosen the ice. I put mine in the water to loosen it slightly and then gently press on the ice with a broom handle. Sometimes they still break, but generally they are broken when I put them into the barrel rather than breaking upon firing. Good luck and thank you for watching!!

I've experimented plenty myself making potatoes launchers. You can always add a pressure gauge on the tube so you can use a 12 volt or even regular air tank compressor to save you the trouble of manually pumping it up.

Have you found a way to add air other than the hand pump? I have one of those cordless air inflators and just wondered if I could get the air pressure high enough? You caught any fish using this yet?
@Woods2Table
@Woods2Table 4 жыл бұрын
Alex Myers the hand pump is exhausting. We will be demonstrating another way in a subsequent video, likely an adapted scuba tank. The electric (or you really need battery for beach use) pumps I’ve seen look like they are underpowered for this and if they did get you to the right psi, would take too long. Stay tuned or if you find a solution you like, do let us know.

Optimal barrel length will take some testing and calculation, which we haven’t had time to do while getting ready for deer season. That will likely be in the next bait cannon video. We have used sealant in the past around the inside of the air valve but didn’t this time. Either way worked fine. Honestly didn’t think about it when building this one, but hasn’t been a problem. I’d still recommend doing it.

@@Woods2Table Thanks for the answers. One last question, for the 5ft barrel, could a threaded connector be used so that the barrel can be removed. Didn't know if air would leak out at the threaded joint if I did that. You are right, that sucker is long!
@Woods2Table
@Woods2Table 4 жыл бұрын
Threaded joint on the barrel would probably be fine because it’s past the ball valve, but don’t let that joint take the weight of the entire barrel or it might snap. Even when screwed in, try to support it.

Can you launch just a 2oz sinker and rig from this or does it need to have the ice molds?
@Woods2Table
@Woods2Table 3 жыл бұрын
You know, I’m not sure. You’re going to want at least a small length of ice mold to fill the barrel and provide something for the air to catch and push up the barrel, but I also wonder if it would be effective to put your rig on top of the ice in the barrel instead of inside the ice. The ice would act like wadding inside a musket or similar. I’m headed to the beach this week to test a new cannon (stay tuned for that one! It’s BIG), and I’ll try this out and let you know.

@Woods2Table
@Woods2Table 4 жыл бұрын
I'm by no means an expert and would recommend you do your own research just to be safe BUT - looking at some schedule 40 psi ratings online, 1.5" is going to be stronger than 4" if the same thickness, ambient temperature, length etc. I'd also think you're going to need a lot of air if your cylinder and barrel are the same size (or close to it) and therefore hold a similar volume.

Actually, don't know. 4" schedule 40 pvc is rated to 220 psi, but that's not air pressure, its liquid. I haven't taken this particular build above ~140psi just to be safe. Just make sure you get the pressurized sch 40 and not DWV. Ideally, use schedule 80 pvc. Be safe out there, build and use at your own risk... However -- if you really want to know, we're about to test the limits - you'll see it in an upcoming video :)

fun video. not to be a party pooper but ,man i wish people would use schedule 80. much thicker and stronger. ive seen 40 blow into shards that can take your head off for real. its worth the extra money to buy the 80. nothing worth dying over or losing an eye or getting a jugular punctured. id got the extra mile and wrap that air chamber in gorila tape real well just for an added measure of safety. nothing ruins a fishing trip faster than a man with a punctured jugular screaming while his heart pumps his body dry of blood and he showers his old lady and friends in blood then falls off the boat and drowns while he bleeds to death as the water turns red. then sharks go into a feeding frenzy on his carcass in the water in front of his friends and wife. ripping him limb from limb. His testicles like little bobbers floating on the surface. then rescue comes and pulls whats left of the carcass from the water with a long gaff hook by hooking him under the jawbone. and his family watches in horror as his half eaten carcass lay on the deck of the boat in the blazing sun. flies all over it. sharks circling the boat for another tasty bite. all because billy bob wanted to save a few bucks at lowes and buy schedule 40. dont be cheap. your testicles depend on it.

Its not funny, ghost rider is right. I’ve seen it happen. It haunts me to this day. The sharks continue to circle until they become all too curious. Having finished their appetizer, their now starving bellies crave the main course. One by one they take flying leaps at the stern, until one finally breaks through. The boat begins taking on water and listing astern until one by one, those on-board slide down into their jaws. A storm appears on the horizon. The winds quicken. A twister touches the water. The sharks are swept up into the air. The moisture drawn from the water’s surface keeps them alive. At breakneck speed the twister barrels toward the coast. Nearing civilization, the sharks are hurled from the storm and plummet toward the surface. Hundreds parish as the sharks fall to the city streets, devouring everything as they descend. We concur - buy schedule 80. The fate of civilization depends on it.
