Noel is funny cos he has kept saying every now and then that he just knows the basic chords and that's all you need etc. although Oasis songs often contains all these add/sus/m7 etc. chords which are not that basic + he has actually used more alternative chords especially on his later songs (SOTSOG and some of his solo songs). Maybe he wants to appeal more 'rock'n'roll by not ''knowing'', or maybe he points to the fact that he doesn't know the names of all these chords, which is actually quite common among some guitar players. You just keep playing what sounds good and cool and that's enough:)

I absolutely love Jeffs stuff. And, I would love to do a vid on him... But I'm not sure if that will be an imminent thing or a one-day-future thing, because there's just so much stuff out there covering the great American stuff of the 90s and really not enough on the British stuff. But I will definitely file the idea in the long term ideas folder....

Yeah a lot of chord books are wrong. I used to have a big thick Beatles chord book 20 years ago and some were spot on and others weren't. It also would have the wrong keys as well. Used to say I Am the Walrus was 2 semitones below so the main chords after the intro started on G but it's definitely an A and Noel starts on an A although plays it slightly different afterwards.

@JamesHargreavesGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The Noel live sound is difficult because we don't get it raw, we only ever hear a mixed version... and also he changes guitars, amps, fx and rig from gig to gig. If you want the early Noel sound, your best bet is always going to be guitar + amp + loud however hahaha
@utkarsh_Shrivastava3 жыл бұрын

I remember the Morning Glory tab book being absolutely awful, even missing solo passages and fills. They should have re-notated it as part of the 25th anniversary release of Morning Glory, I'm sure there'd still be a big call for it.

Did Noel know musically what he was doing at the time, or was it just the sound of the chords ?
@doctornov73 жыл бұрын
He knew what he was doing, but didn't understand what he was doing.
@mackin263 жыл бұрын
It was the sound of the chords, he’s not a technical guitarist and doesn’t do music theory. Just a jammy clever bastard.
@JamesHargreavesGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Hard to tell with Noel as he makes stuff up so much in interviews and pretends to be dumber than he is... I don't think he knew the names or the theory, but I think he had a 'feel' for the theory which informed his writing if you know what I mean. I don't think he could have clearly articulated it, but I think his brain did have the framework of the musical structures he worked within
@simontunnicliffe21073 жыл бұрын
@@doctornov7 I was gonna ask a similar question. It can't have all been by ear can it? It's one thing knowing that taking your pinky finger off an A (making it a sus) sounds good but knowing what other obscure chords will work can't just all be by ear can it or did he just nick'em from somewhere else. I woulda thought without some theory knowledge when a bass player tried to put bass to it, it might not work in the context of key / scale etc?
@doctornov73 жыл бұрын
@@simontunnicliffe2107 I can't speak for Noel, but as somewhat of a magpie songwriter myself (to use Weller's description of Noel), I've learned loads of the chords to my favourite songs over the years and, as a result, have learned more and more about progressions etc. and what notes/chords go together over time. You just pick stuff up, especially the weirder changes like in some Beatles songs or jazz stuff. I've "nicked" loads of chord sequences and modified them. It's just something I have a knack for it seems (my theory is quite basic, it does help with songwriting but only as a little ace up the sleeve so to speak). Funny watching this video actually, I asked myself if any of my songs have suspension chords in them, and loads do. I learnt those originally from a musician in a band I was briefly in last year. I learn different things from different places and that combined with just playing around and trying stuff, it all coalesces to produce the songs I write. I imagine it was the same for Noel. This is just speculation though.
