My Notes/Conclusions: 1) Pre-lecture: Grab all of the main concepts/keywords from all upcoming lectures and link them in a way that makes sense to you. Go to lectures, get the information, and bring it back to the diagram. Critically assess whether your original relationships still makes sense or if they still have utility. 2) Use concepts 3) Learn the concepts without the numbers. Don't plug and play unless the concept exists within your knowledge domain and you know for certain what the adjacent concepts are. "Understand the maths in words". In general, think like the producer.

I'm totally new to all this note-apps, note-videos, community etc, but what do you mean with main concepts? For example before a class in mathematics, do you mean that you should be one step ahead and study what this math-chapter is about? Could you give a concrete answer because I'm really intrigued

during math class in high school i saw visual patterns and found the answer that way. But because i didnt get high grades before and all of a sudden with a very complex subject i wrote down the answer too fast. And the mathteacher didnt believe i didnt cheat . So he asked me how i did it. There were 2 days of doing it that he explained before and i could not come up with those explaitions so he asked me in front of the whole clas: how did you cheat (because the person next to me didnt have the answer). So i hesitated but then try to tell him how i did it. I saw a beautifull magical landscape of pattern of hexagons that somehow morfed into something and then I had my answer . he first laughed, then i drew it and eventually he believed me. But i was so petrified by beeing called out in class i never dared to think that way in patterns and images ever again and tried to follow his method. And i forgot how to do it because i never used that method ever again. I blocked it and tried to do what the class did. I never saw those patterns again in my mind after the scolding. I just wish this other way of thinking wasnt so rediculized so kids that are naturally gifted arent bullied out of the gift. But if people have books or info on how to see math without numbers or words but in patterns and relations and imaging: any tips on how to rekindle this way of thinking: please tell me in a reaction.

Organizing Notes for Productivity: In this KZbin transcript, the speaker discusses the importance of organizing notes for students to enhance productivity. The speaker suggests creating a single canvas for each topic, such as a week's worth of lectures, and building upon it. They recommend using a non-linear note-taking method to effectively build and annotate on top of the notes. The speaker also emphasizes the significance of conceptual understanding in math, suggesting that students focus on understanding concepts first before delving into equations. They highlight the value of knowing the purpose and application of math concepts. For essay writing, the speaker advises students to think like the author or director, understanding the themes and motivations behind their work. They suggest researching the author or director's background to gain a deeper understanding. The speaker also mentions the importance of good writing skills and practicing with past exam questions. In terms of making it easier for students, the speaker suggests that teachers and professors provide formula or cheat sheets during assessments, allowing students to focus more on conceptual understanding. They also recommend providing guidance and feedback on writing skills to help students improve.

After watching this video, I understand that you need to think of math in a way that actually allows to use it in a contextual setting. This helps to know the relevance of that concept from different perspectives and allows you to easily use it along with other concepts in that situation. The only problem I have now is how I would take notes or map these concepts out. How many contexts would you need to map out the concepts, within the content of the curriculum

Hey Justin, I’m in the iCanStudy course and I’m a researcher. I’m working on making sure AI will be safe for humanity. My work involves a mix of AI coding experiments and thinking really hard about future powerful AI systems and how we can make sure they help humanity flourish rather than lead to catastrophic outcomes. I’m trying to take what I can from your course to become world-class at research so that I can produce high-quality research and solve very important problems. Could you talk about how you would approach this? I’ve seen most of your videos in this general direction. And you do say to try to understand things conceptually first here, but I’d like to go in more detail. :) I’m planning on sending you an email to have a 1-on-1 chat once I’m further along in the course and have some fully thought through questions I’d like to ask.

When at 3:39 he says offload cognitive resources to allow higher -order thinking..what does he means can someone explain it in easy wording?
@rohitiyer285
@rohitiyer285 Жыл бұрын
Cognitive resources, simply put, are the efforts we make to make sense of concepts. For example, we use mental resources to understand the difference between stock and bond valuation (finance concepts). We find this process difficult (assuming we are not finance gurus), so we need to offload this effort eventually onto an app or a sheet of paper, or we will get too confused and forget the information. Higher-order thinking refers to comparing and contrasting ideas (see Bloom's Taxonomy) to better understand a whole topic instead of memorizing the definitions in isolation. Higher-order thinking leads to better memory because we chunk information and understand it together rather than reading and learning them in isolation (kzbin.info/www/bejne/o53VgH2drrWsidk this video does an excellent job of explaining chunking). Putting it all together, we use cognitive resources to engage in higher-order thinking because comparing and contrasting ideas to engage in a greater understanding of a concept or topic is difficult (memorizing is easy in the short run but challenging in the long run while higher-order thinking is tough in the short-run but more manageable in the long run). We offload these resources as notes that reflect this higher-order thinking. Dr. Sung and one of his associates, Archer Newton, advocate mind maps and flowcharts to reflect the use of cognitive resources to engage in higher-order thinking because they show the relationships between the concepts crisply and clearly. This note-taking style is opposed to linear and verbal notes, which look like bullet points and paragraphs that don't force you to evaluate how you think about the information. I hope this helps you. Dr. Sung's video on encoding offers a more detailed understanding: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJS3aaOrgdWBgaM.

Yes. 😊 Not only that, but you can take it one step further and also use the books and essays process Justin described. For example, when you're learning a programming language, look up its author and its history. It will help you better understand the language and its quirks. Same thing when you're learning a new programming concept, a new data structure, a new algorithm, etc. A little bit of background reading will make the whole learning process easier.

5:55 Not so happy with the maths section as it shows that sung has never actually studied mathematics, but calculation methods (it is a widespread mistake as it is reeinforced by education to mistake calculation for mathematics). The idea for example that there "arent that many conepts in maths" is in my opinion false. Almost any concept one can think of in physics or economics has a mathematical representation or abstract analogy. When you are actually studying maths your main problem task is proofing propositions. The procedural part here (proof-lore that means standard ticks in proofs that have proven to be fruitful and useful) is heavily reliant on the underlying conceptual and relational understanding as everything here is highly context-specific. It isn't so much that there is no such thing as task "apply equation 1 to variables x,y,z" but that there isnt such task structure at all. The only task known is: proof the following statement.

I don't believe a word someone who is selling something says unless they show me something first. Sung talks a lot, so show some notes. You won't find any. He only talks in broad concepts that sound great but never quite relates any of that into something real. I followed a few of his threads of tips and they never quite get to anywhere useful. Instead you are left thinking "His courses bust get into the nitty gritty" but I'm sure they don't. Sounds like snake oil. If he can show some math notes that actually have value I will take his advice. Same with his mind maps, same with anything he says.

True, as iam learning higher level mathematics, i found his advice to be somewhat misleading. Believe me or not, but math is all about practice. You don't learn to apply the concepts magically by doing some mindmap and bullshit. It's all about intense and effective practice, it takes years of hardwork and dedication to improve in math. That's it, there's really no secret to math except rigor and intuition.No hate to him though, he's doing a good job by demonstrating the mindmap and chunking for subjects like biology and chemistry which require you to be crystal clear in your concepts.

My thought as well, though I had it with regard to his description of writing a book review. What he's describing is a very particular form of literary interpretation, and there are dozens and dozens of different schools of textual interpretation. If a professor assigns an essay requiring you to use a school of interpretation that isn't author-based, Justin's approach seems likely to fall apart pretty quickly. I'm also a little surprised that he recommended checking the Wikipedia page for background information about the author. Maybe check Wikipedia for the reference section on the author, but for actual background information...? I also disagree with what he said about "If you were the author of the book or film, you would crush this exam." There are so many examples of literary scholars overinterpreting the color palette described in a book or used in a film that it's a running joke among literary and film scholars. Sometimes, it's just because the author or set designer liked that color. So if you have a film or literary scholar who's obsessed with everything having meaning in a text grading an exam, and the author sits down and sees a question about why a certain doorway was green instead of some other color, that grader will not be happy with the answer "I like that color."
