Upgraded Solar on my Catalina 30

The Sailing Project Artemis S4. Ep 94
Happy Monday all. The sailing season is almost here, and we are trying to get all the Catalina 30's and the others ready for the water in time. This week I worked on the 1982 and will have that video out ASAP. But check out my solar upgrade 200 watts and a 20 amp controler.

Nice. I set up my Catalina 25 last year with a very similar Renogy 200 watt solar charging system. I keep the two 100 watt panels tied to the top of the bimini. I have the same 20 amp controller and also added a Renogy battery monitor. Works great and my two group 23 batteries are always topped off no matter the energy usage (LED lighting helps). I think the system will even support an Alpi-Cool fridge but I haven't needed to add that yet, as the ice chest has been sufficient so far. I had to return the inverter though because a Catalina 25 does not have a grounding system for off-grid use. The Renogy inverters need an "earth ground" connection, which I didn't find out until after it was delivered and I read the instructions. Does your Catalina 30 have an off-grid grounding system?

It does not however I use these non earth grounded with out issue You can see the trailer unit I built in my shorts

Hi Brian, if you want to add a third panel, can you just add another splitter?

I could but at that point I'd just buy a 3 way splitter I have used a 4 way in my solar gen

@@Sailing.Artemis I asked Renogy tech support about that when I was planning my system. Their answer was that the Voyager controller can only accept two 100-watt panels and that if I need more panels then I'd need a second controller or a bigger controller. But you still have your old controller so you can just connect a third panel to the old one.
