It may work if it's the same type but it will only go at the maximum speed for the laptop. Don't buy anything until you check with RAM maker that it's compatible. Some RAM may seem cheaper but will not work.

That's a really good question. Generally speaking for photo and video editing you want as much CPU power as possible and plenty of RAM. A G2 would be a decent entry level because it comes with intel i5 CPU; however, the mobile version lacks 2 cores compared to Desktop CPU... If you are set on getting Laptop for mobile purposes I would get something that at least has SSD and lot's of RAM as well. This should be good enough for HD quality video editing. I'm glad to help. Yes, ddr3l is typically associated with laptop RAM and "L" refers to low power consumption. Main concern is getting a good brand to insure compatibility for example: amzn.to/2QUEm2u *ddr3/ddr3l difference is in voltage but both should work fine* . The compatibility usually lies in whether RAM is unbuffered or non-ecc which is what you need.

Hello. The biggest issue is not the RAM but the CPU when editing/encoding the videos. Before I had an older i7 and it took forever to encode a normal length video and impossible to encode something longer. Sure, more RAM is better when editing videos, but without a CPU that has more cores... it would take forever to encode it. Right now, I only have 16GB on my Desktop- but I use a i9 9900k CPU. A Desktop will always be better for editing, but if you must use a laptop and want a good experience... something newer with 8 cores + Nvidia GPU would be 10x faster.

My first question might not be newbie but I'm too newbie to tell. You have a i9 9900 CPU. You mention a GPU. Do you edit then without a GPU? If not, is it possible to edit without? My main goal for the laptop/desktop will be ti edit video. Is it cheaper to buy a new desktop with these stats, or to buy the parts and plug them into the elitebook? Or should I maybe build my own? Again, budget is important for me right now. The minimum to edit video, with the lightest program is what I'm looking for.

Great questions. On 840 G1 laptop you cannot use dd4, but dd3 ram like this: amzn.to/31T83TD It's better to upgrade to bigger SSD; I recommend Samsung brand like this: amzn.to/2Z6GLwh or similar. Unfortunately, you can't upgrade the Video Card.

Very good question. The G2 has a different CPU which supports more RAM. The CPU you mentioned is i5 5300u (socket FCBGA1168) and supports up to 16GB max RAM. So, 2 8GB ram sticks. It is not possible to upgrade CPU because it's soldered to motherboard.
