For everyone asking, the price for this is around 5-7K for the panel plus full installation depending on your setup. The good news is that if you already are getting a panel upgrade due to adding Solar or an EV charger you'd already be spending about 2-3K and it might even qualify for the federal ITC (26% credit) so it could be more affordable if you bundle it. Hope this helps, stay tuned and if you want to learn more check out span.io/bensullins

If I already have Solar / Powerwalls (paid in part by 30% FTC), would installing Span Smart Panel still qualify for any FTC (Federal Tax Credit)? Is it considered a home energy efficiency upgrade and qualifying for any other Tax benefit?

The SPAN company should in here and read and respond to some of the questions being asked. It does look cool. I'd sure like one, but I don't have that kind of money to even consider spending on one. I'd love a self-sufficient system with batteries that could last me 5 days, that would be amazing. Everyone that can afford to do things like this should. If I bought some Powerwalls, I'd probably get at least 2 or 3.

This is exactly the point Michael Moore was trying to make in his mini documentary Planet of the Humans. While he did cherry pick so much outdated data that his film was almost immediately discredited, the big take away is the blatant waste of energy. If we assume those were 6x 60 watt incandescent bulbs (the only type that work with that sort of dimmer), then he’s wasting 340 watts plus the energy needed to remove that extra heat during the summer when the AC is running. We need to send the California Light Bulb police over to Ben’s house to remove all banned light bulbs. Lol

@@cypercharged, yes, some are specially designed to work with dimmers, but the basic LED bulb is either on or off, or flashing when there is a small current. I have a light switch with a tiny light that comes on when the switch it off, so you can see it easier at night. But with LED light, when I turn the switch off it lets enough current through to let the bulb blink every 10 seconds. Lol I just found this on Google: “If you live in California, you can say goodbye to some incandescent and halogen light bulbs. The California Energy Commission banned the sale of inefficient light bulbs starting January 1, 2020. This decision didn't just suddenly happen. It's the result of years of work to make the state more energy efficient.” So Ben’s wasteful days are numbers. Lol

@@cypercharged, I just have one switch (on/off) and one bulb. Perhaps there are newer bulbs with the circuit needed to prevent it. it's a must have if you have solar + storage. People with solar + storage see 40% more backup power availability when a span is in the home. The app is so intuitive and the ability to drag and drop circuits is amazing. Gone are the days of having to make the choice of which circuits you want to go on you back up panel.
@TagiukGold
@TagiukGold 3 жыл бұрын
For a new home this would be very nice. Also, if you are going to have a backup system (battery or generator) be conscious when doing the wiring layout to have the circuits be configured in an optimal way to take advantage of this control, such as lights on their own circuit, and one circuit that has outlets in key places instead of the typical one circuit per room. Typically refrigerators and freezers are already on their own circuits, so that's good.

We have thousands of powerwall installs and powerbacks etc under our belt, as well as a number of other battery products. We are working with span to educate the market here on their product. As far as how homeowners are able to see longer lasting times with a span, versus a traditional setup, its simple....it comes down to the ability to drag and drop loads via the app, the lengthening the back up time in grid outage situation. The 40% number came from spans team, to us. They have done their own studies and passed that along to our team.

@@ericcarlson678 that makes more sense; the people that spent the extra $ on Span are the ones actively managing their house load during an outage vs Span making any more backup power available. And you’re not observing the 40%, that number comes from Span. Thx for the reply.

I saw this a little while back and thought it was cool, but seeing it in use is next level. Good partnership Span. One feature I would suggest if it doesn't exist already: "extra off" (or other name) that makes that circuit off and require some extra deliberate action (like typing "Turn On") in order to turn it on. If I was working with electricity I wouldn't want it to just be a single tap or voice command keeping the flow of electricity from coming back. Tesla should acquire them. Their scale making it a bit cheaper & integrated would be nice.

Fantastic product that can really help to reduce/optimize the energy consumption. I am not sure that using a software switch to turn a circuit off for work to be carried out as you demonstrated does meet safety rules. Lock out, tag out is necessary because what if a family member turns the circuit on while you working on it? I would recommend SPAN to add a safety feature here (if not already in place) such as a pin locked switch off state with warning message or a dedicated maintenance switch off state that can only unlocked by the person who switched the circuit off. Best practise still is to switch it off in the panel.

90% for the AC to DC switch mode power supply is fairly reasonable. It's probably even more efficient than that as you do have some heat losses in the batteries themselves. Although perhaps the cars energy monitoring is just monitoring what is coming out of the cars charger and not what specifically is stored in the batteries. So perhaps the ac to dc switch mode power supply is indeed 90% efficient.

As a detective novelist, after you showed the feature at 3:57, I had an idea for a case plot in less than a second. But as an audience, I prefer to call it a potential risk. Indeed, the remote control feature is very convenient, but this also means that there is a risk of getting electric shock by accidentally touching the switch, program error, or being attacked by hackers (this possibility of realization is relatively low, so I put It serves as the plot of my novel). Based on the above reasons, maybe SPAN can make a mechanical device on the switchboard. When the circuit breaker is disconnected for any reason, it can only be reset manually in front of the switchboard. I know this idea is the enemy of convenience, but as human beings, our enemy is a risk.

I'll reply since no one else has, probably because they were kind of afraid to say the obvious... an insignificant amount. It's not a device that does real work, like an appliance (heater, fridge, ac, tesla charger...) it's just a device that monitors power draw. Switching circuits requires zero power until you "trigger" the switch. The wireless? How much power does your router consume and that's doing a lot more "work" sending/receiving packets for a myriad of devices. Span, like any of these kinds of devices, would use your existing wifi.

One question that I did have was how did you map out the circuits from your panel? Was it trial and error? Ie your sons room is listed as the island. How long did it take to map out? Finally, if you lost power (all power over an extended period) is it a cloud based system that retains the information so you don’t have to go through that mapping over and over? Thank you!

Making sure I understand this. In a traditional hybrid solar there are two load centers - the original panel with grid attached circuits, and the inverter/battery backed up circuits. This panel would imply you deinstalled both of the prior panels and run all circuits into the Span panel which programmatically determines which bus they should be on - the grid or the battery. The SDG&E meter then immediately preceding the Span panel. True? Thanks.
@arleneallen8809
@arleneallen8809 3 жыл бұрын
@Evelyn Fisher My thanks. Sounds like you work with Span. This being the case, a Span load center replacement could be done independently of a solar installation. All the circuits would simply be on the grid tied bus. One of the problems I had when I put in my off grid (18 years ago) was quite trivial and yet vexing. Some of the wiring would not reach to the second panel since electrical contractors don't put in expansion coiling like we do in telecomm. Extending the circuits was a minor bit of misery.

Great video. I'm going to compare this to the Lumin. FYI- there is absolutely 0 chance I would ever, ever trust that thing to shut off a circuit on which I was working. Just no way

Isn't the loss on charging due to the conversion of AC to DC? I swear I saw someone's vid that charged at a non-Tesla charger and there was a big discrepancy between what the Tesla was saying on the monitor and the amount of energy that the non-Tesla charger had said it was delivered. It may have been one of Out of Specs vids.

The only thing I would be nervous about is if you are working on the electronics and if somehow that circuit turns back on. Having a repair mode where you actually need to physically flip that breaker back on would be nice.

Commercial HVAC tech here. I would not trust that for doing electrical work, having a relay that could just as easily pop back on by some other control whether someone else with access to the app or maybe a schedule/automation control. Most people get electrocuted not because they’re working on a powered electrical circuit but because they thought there was no power but someone or something turned it back on. Maybe a feature to trip the breaker from the app so you have to physically reset the breaker from a locking panel would be much safer. Being able to turn off circuits by phone would help in identifying circuits for sure. Love the idea though. I hope things like this become way more main stream and of course muuuch cheaper!

I'm also a tech and data enthusiast but cautiously approach new technology. Especially with over-the-air updates, what security concerns are there about backdoors allowing bad actors to get into the panel and controlling your electricity? Better yet, since powerline ethernet is a thing, what about the possibility of controlling electronics or gathering surveillance through the electrical circuit? I'm not trying to put on my tinfoil hat, I'm just genuinely curious.

Ben, Evelyn - I have a Tesla Solar Roof and 3 Powerwalls that backup the entire home. I'm VERY interested in getting a Span to replace my Sense energy monitor and get true circuit level monitoring. How does Span integrate with my system as there is already a transfer switch in my Tesla Backup gateway and its the gateway that supplies the grid/solar/battery power to my main electrical panel? is this all compatible?

Hi Aaron, your setup sounds perfect for adding Span! The Tesla gateway retains the transfer switch control. Span communicates with the Tesla Gateway to ensure they are synchronized. Please reach out on our website and we can answer any additional questions you have.

I have been contemplating getting solar. After watching this and a few other SPAN videos, I just know that I would never install Solar without this. Simple as that. This is really cool technology that will allow me to finally understand and control what I want to control in terms of power utilization as best I can in an environment that is prone to outages; whether that be due to hurricanes, tropical storms, or simply power outages which are manifold in the Caribbean environments. I wonder if there is a distributor in Puerto Rico?

ben, we just moved into our brand new house a couple of months ago and i wish we'd known about SPAN beforehand bc i'm absolutely loving this panel setup w/ phone app but the one thing you didn't talk about was cost so how much is that panel? it's not worth me upgrading bc this isn't our forever home but an investment property but still very curious about what the actual cost would be to install this panel.

Hi Ben So I'm sold on SPAN to go with my PowerWalls. My Architect and I will be installing 2 SPAN panels... but I wonder your opinion on another SPAN soon offering? Regarding their "SPAN EV Charger" ... Based on YOUR PowerWall and Tesla's ... Does your use assessment indicate that the SPAN EV charge could provides some kind of added value over the Tesla Charger? Or do you believe the combo of Tesla app and SPAN Panel provide all you need and so the SPAN EV charger is not really necessary given existing SPAN Panel & Tesla PowerWalls? Cheers, Eric

Out of curiosity how does your drinking water condenser thing you got on your roof a while back do on energy? You still use it/it work OK? There was a lot of data that just called it a giant swamp cooler & only good for certain areas.

What could possibly go wrong? Is the circuit secured 100% off and under your control? Always good questions to ask when working on electrical circuits, and/or manipulating your world through apps and software interfaces. Nice video Ben. First off great review, had no idea this existed, Second you mentioned the, I think, 9% diffrence in charging the car and what is shown, im no expert in electrical but when I build PC'S the power supply comes in ratings like bronze, gold, platinum, the higher you go the more efficient it is cause it lessens the loss of electricity that happens. With what you said that seems to line up with the same percentage as PC power supplies so I'm guessing it's the same thing you see. Btw the ratings are between 87%-95%.

Just wanted to dig a bit deeper into the internet down scenario. What is run locally on the box vs on the cloud. This is going to be to very useful during a grid down situation which will likely mean that the internet will be down as well. The last major power outage our internet was down and cell towers were overloaded so how which features are available with no internet connection?

Pretty awesome, but I would preferred a better dive into the data and a bit less of an ad even though it is sponsored, just felt a bit more like an infomercial than a sponsored video if that makes sense. Definitely a cool product though, sadly very expensive for relatively low utility. I doubt using it as a smart switch to turn things on and off is advised by them since that's not the typical daily use case for breakers and you are shutting off an entire circuit, not necessarily a single outlet or light. So I feel that is a really unrealistic use case compared to something that controls things at the outlet or light level. I'm thinking the difference you are seeing in kWh is the conversion from AC to DC for charging. You car is taking in DC and house is providing AC. 10% seems like a lot but could be legit. I know folks have compared charging at 120v vs 240v even at lower amperage, and higher amps was much more efficiently converted.
