Thanks for the video! Just bought one earlier for a spare laptop. Mines the exact model, interestingly mine came with a nice Western Digital 1TB instead of the Toshiba. Mine also had a 3200Mhz stick of ram but was Samsung. Which I just ordered another of the same to upgrade it for dual channel. Is odd it comes with 3200mhz but runs at 2400 stock. Also added a 250GB m.2 I had laying around for the OS drive.

I've heard of these having Seagate drives as well. HP must toss in whatever 5400rpm 1Tb drive they have handy at the moment, probably whatever they can get in bulk for that lot.

@@phreakwars Not sure why they cheap out so much and cripple it out of the box. 4GB single channel GTA V as an example got around 20fps on low settings. I threw in an 8GB stick and confirmed it was in dual channel, and GTA V was averaging 50-55fps! This laptop is for sure a sleeper.

Thanks man I was replacing a screen on my son's laptop and had the screws out I wanted to make sure there weren't any surprises removing the case with wires and such. It is a great little laptop I need to upgrade the ram. Hey Robert. I have a question concerning the RAM. The spec sheet on HP's website state that the RAM type is SDRAM. The RAM you linked in the description is of the SODIMM variety. Is it truly safe to use the SODIMM RAM you linked?

Once you log into this machine with a valid MS account , its TPM serial is registered with Microsoft. You can then just re-install with a usb stick and log back in to activate its version

I never cloned the drive. I wiped it clean since it was a brand new machine. No reason to keep the old factory junk on it. You can clone the drive I suppose, but I honestly never recommend cloning. I recommend backing up all the data you want to save to a thumb drive or portable drive, create a Windows 11 USB stick, and just do a fresh install. You will not need to enter any keys since it's already embedded in the motherboard. You won't have all those garbage programs that come packaged with most OEM's either. You'll have an all around smoother running machine which is I'm guessing what you are shooting for. I do not have a video on doing this and will probably never make one just because there are literally hundreds of videos on KZbin you can find where the procedure is shown. Not particularly the type of content I like to do honestly because there are so many other videos showing how.

Links are in the description. For Windows 11, you'll need to first remove "S" mode. I don't recall if that CPU will allow you to just do an upgrade because of TPM requirements. If it doesn't, then this is pretty easy to get around by downloading the windows media creation tool, creating an ISO, then download Rufus and choose an extended install which will remove the TPM limitations and allow you to install 11 on it. If what I said is confusing, doing that upgrade on a non-TPM machine is actually going to be the topic of my next upcoming video.

The laptop will run on PC 2400-3600 speed memory, but will only run at 2400. Your best buy would probably be some PC-2666 speed since it can only do 2400.

I can't help on this exact laptop, but I do have another laptop coming in soon that I will be doing an upgrade on. Wasn't planning on filming it, but I might just film it anyways since I will be doing the same procedure of reinstalling the OS on a new M.2 that's going inside. I've had several people ask me how to do it, so I might as well show em. Won't be this week, since I'm in the middle of alot of stuff I'm trying to get done (having a gas meter removed from my workshop, doing some remodeling). Would it cause any issues to keep the stock 4 GB RAM stick in and just add a second 8GB RAM stick? Also, if you are planning on upgrading past 128 SSD anyways, there is no reason to not buy the one TB hard drive model? The reason I ask is because it appears the hard drive model comes with Windows 10 home, where the SSD model comes with Windows 10 in S Mode.

No problem at all if you want to keep the 4 gig stick and add another 8, or even 16 gig stick if you wanted. Max memory is 32 gigs on this laptop. And the reason you want the hard drive model, is because it comes with the needed ribbon cable for a second hard drive. The stock hard drive is a junk 5400 rpm drive. You could easily go all out and add something like a 2Tb Seagate FireCuda drive as well as the nVME drive because it includes that added ribbon cable and hard drive "cage".

The 14-dk1035wm is spec'd exactly the same as the 14-dk1025wm, the only difference is that one is in "S" mode (which sucks). Upgrading it will yield you the exact same results I showed and what ETA Prime shows in the follow up video I link to. With that being said, what I would do is price what it would cost to add an M.2 drive and increase the ram and compare that to other higher preforming laptops. Lately I have been getting several Ryzen 4000 and 5000 series laptops, which are, of course, much better. The price I am seeing on them retail, is around $650 and higher. I'm not gonna say you should take that one back, but what I will say is you should comparison shop some of those better spec'd laptops before deciding. This one ended up being just a bit under $500 total (retail) after all upgrades. My cost of course, was much much less then that as I get alot of my stuff from sponsors, but something you'll wanna keep in mind.

It's a standard 2.5" HDD. If you are planing on using both a M.2 SSD and an SSD on the SATA ribbon, your model might not have the required ribbon if you started with the SSD model, this is why I was specific in using the 14-dk1025wm and not the other models. All because of a cheap little ribbon that is hard to track down otherwise but makes a hell of a difference if you are looking for more storage out of the device.

Under the rubber feet on the bottom there are screws. You'll need to take a hair dryer warm up the rubber strips a little bit carefully pull back the strips then unscrew the screws

Just seen your video yesterday while out looking for a cheap laptop(staying away from chromebook). I ended up with the hp 14-dk1032wm. Which is very similar if not the same as one in video. Display at Walmart said was out of stock but the guy said he had one. 330 bucks. I want to upgrade the Ram and eventually the HD to more size. Greetings Phreakwar, I was actually searching for info on how to calibrate the battery on the HP 14-dk1025wm (have tried multiple times and every way HP "suggests" and I STILL get batt ok but needs calibrated messages.) Anyway I was Sooo Impressed with your video I JUST ordered a Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 500GB and Crucial Ballistix 3200 MHz DDR4 DRAM for my laptop. It has been a bit sluggish at times and I'm betting this will speed it up, Thanks for a great video. BTW If you have any suggestions on my battery calibration situation Please let me know, I have done all sorts of auto and manual calibration attempts, discharged and rechardge till i'm about mad enough to get out my trusty sledge hammer.....

Sorry, can't help with the battery problem beyond what HP recommends. Hate when that happens too. Sometimes you can do a reset, sometimes you just end up buying a new battery to fix it. Good luck with that and hopefully you find a solution.

You actually shouldn't need to install any drivers, Windows will find them OK. I did however update the Windows GPU drivers to ones from AMD. That's just a matter of downloading them and running the install program.

could you link the ram and the ssd please? Ive just bought this same laptop (dk1025wm, 4gb ram, 1tb, quad core) , but mine comes with ryzen 3 3300 u and vega 6 graphics. Right now it is too slow, to open the programs and eeverything, I even investigated about this laptop before i bought it, and they said that it could even be a good laptop for gaming (minimum gaming). Also the battery doesnt last long. Do you think that upgrading both the ram and ssd could solve my problem of speed, battery and gaming?

Ram can be found here: amzn.to/3chQlSd the M.2 I used can be found here: amzn.to/3qZvxmM Upgrading ram and ssd will for sure improve the gaming and speed, you'll get a very slight increase in battery with the M.2, but not enough to make a significant impact. I'd maybe check the power settings and see if maybe you can adjust something.

@@banditx3354 well, as an example, suppose the laptop had a bit of a charge going through it while I change say the memory. While the amount of current is too low to cause a shock, it is high enough to cause an electrical discharge or jump when removing the ram stick, which could damage the ram, or worse, damage the leads on the motherboard. That's just one example of why. Many other examples of possibilities while a charge is going into the machine and you work on it. Another reason I do this, is because when you add/change memory, a motherboard will need to retrain itself which can affect not only memory timing but other settings. Removing all charge (including the CMOS battery), will give you a clean retrain with fresh BIOS settings to work with.

I'm not sure if you will get to answer my question.. but.... I have this very same laptop and the speed (4gb RAM) KILLS MEEEEEEEE! I HATE HOW SLOW IT IS! I use it heavily, multiple windows open at a time (college and heavy programs)... So If I change the RAM, 4gb to a 16gb it will be this fast? The lack of speed is the only problem I have with it. Everything else is good... the 1TB memory is more than enough for me.

More ram will help you when it comes to loading multiple or large programs. The real speed increase will come from an M.2 upgrade over that very slow 5400 rpm hard drive.

@@The_Dav1d Amazon, Newegg, eBay, etc. Just look for DDR4 at PC2400 speed or higher. The laptop is locked at 2400Mhz on the ram speed, but any speed higher then that will absolutely work. I picked up some 3200 speed at a decent price for this video. If you only wanna do 8 gigs of ram, then what I would do is keep the 4 that is in it now and just buy another 4 gig stick, here's a link to some that's pretty cheap and will work just fine: amzn.to/2MaxONb
