Hey everyone back with more Scrap Mechanic Survival! Today we are back with a grinding episode as we upgrade the combine with saws! Currently the combine is an effective mining vehicle however it is also important to cut down trees and clear a path to new rock formations so we're upgrading it to include many saws for slicing trees quickly!

You could put the vertical saws on the back of the combine so once the tree is down you just reverse in to it

When I nee more wood I go to the forest closest to my base and chop all the trees at the stump. Then I weld all of the trees together, now I have a mile long tree resting on the ground that I slowly grind up with my logger. Sometimes the trees are on a hill, so I go to one end that's up in the air and grind the logs from underneath them. Much faster than sliding around in a hilly forest trying to chop down every tree individually with a giant tree harvester.

What if you put saw blades under the combine in a vertical fashion could that possibly cut up the wood faster when you run over it?

on suspensions, so they wouldn't ruin vehicles grip on a surface. Not sure if vertical position wow be necessary to cut them. And whole combine should be liftable, so you could easily go up and smash down on those logs.

That's how mine works, I have an upside down U shaped vehicle with 2 horizontal blades on each side and 2 vertical coming down from under my seat, I use the front horizontal blades to knock the tree down and then just drive slowly along the length of it, takes about 30 seconds per tree

@@warrenburgin yes you could angle the blades like 30° parallel to the combine, like this you could make the attac-point of the saws wider in height, so you have a bigger area of sawing. You could make it like recommended by Warren Burgin, but I would recommend ////\\\\ or something like this.

Put wheels on each side of the drill mechanism to act as a third axle to help with the friction

i did it in mine... helps but stuck my movements... i guess need better friction wheels in the others positions too... maybe double the wheels used, my truck with 12 big wheels never slide, at least not easy as my miner...

I built a Lawn Mower that works astoundingly well at cutting up lumber. It looks like a riding lawnmower with two counter-rotating saws. The counter-rotating is important because it kinda centers the machine up. It also has a controller like you did here to angle it down further. My original vision was to use the tractor to clear-cut an area and then send in stuff to whack up the logs... But the machines to whack up the logs honestly don't do all that much better than running around with the lawn-tractor. It's a small thing - doesn't have collectors let alone refine-bots. I use it in conjunction with the logger - I use that to clear the area and the combine ends up sweeping up the logs.

Saw blades have contact points on the flat sides as well. If you just had piston smoosh down on the log it'll grind them all up.

Id say make a solid bar of vertical saws, no spaces, but put it on the back and make it so you can invert your controls to work when you are working from the back end of the vehicle

Put each saw blade on a piston that extends past the drill bits, and have them on rotating bearings to have them change from vertical to horizontal and back

Good combination with saws and drills. My sawing vehicle changes the mechanism at the front with the drill mechanism through my welding machine. The saw consists of 4 blades which are pressed to the middle by springs to clamp the wood in between. There are always 2 saw blades on top of each other with a block and 2 bearings in between. So I need exactly 2 springs. On the outside I have a frame like a U. The lower blades are one block above the ground and I lower them a little bit by adjusting the wheel suspension in front a little bit less. This works pretty good and fast with saws. If you can't imagine it, ask again and I'll make a screenshot.

I have done a fair bit of testing on blades and trees. The trick is to use the large flat surface of the saw and not the edges. So to cut down a tree in a split second put 2 blades on the front of a vehicle with 1 block gap between them. The blades are 5 wide but they will appear to clip into each other. Set the rotatation in and down so the they force the tree in between them pulling the vehicle towards the ground. A controller works on trees, but struggles with with ember trees so I just hook the blades to the gas/electric engine and mash the vehicle into the tree. Now chopping up the logs again u need to use the large flat surface of the blades. Bring it down on top of the felled log/tree. The ground under it stops it and the log will split in a second. So a simple solution on a vehicle is 2 blades on the front as mentioned above that can rotate forward 90 degrees to come down on top of the logs.

On my tree clearing vehicle I used a vertical saw rotated so its flat face was cutting the tree (imagine the bearing placement for a drill), and another saw vertically on each side to keep the log centered.

Horizontal saws works better from my experience. If you keep them low, they have no problem with pieces of wood on the ground and its also nice way to cut down haybots.

My woodcutting contraption uses a wall of saws that are 2 apart that can be lowered to the ground over a fallen tree where I have a pusher wall that forces the tree into the wall of saws. Atleast in my experience, it is a very effective design because it tends not to be very finicky since the trees can’t go anywhere, for scale of effectiveness it can easily overwhelm 2 refineries when chopping large trees

Maybe have a similar (to the drills) Saw mechanism attached to the rear of the combine? It would balance the weight of the vehicle and it might be easier just to back up into the trees with a specialized attachment, followed by mining the rocks with the front.

You need those sawblades to move faster. That make the contact you do get, mean more. I use electric engines for that. an additional option is to lower the saw onto the trunk as the sides will also cut trees.

Built mine with 4 engine tank steering and 2 seats (1 facing forward/ 1 backward). Put mining parts on one end and tree cutter on the back. switch seats to alternate use. Used 4 buttons for controlling the cutting/mining. mapped T F G H to 5-8 for driving and steering, vehicle steers and turns correctly for each seat using logic

Horizontal saws work for the trees you just have to decrease that aggressive angle

You could build horizontal saw blades 2 or 3 on one bearing, or vertical bearing directly to frame pipes, it is 2 blocks between each blade. Both options should be better than current one. But second option maybe will be little grind for small trees. And make 2 tires on all axis for less sliding around. Lag is when there are too many rocks on ground, because they are sliding and touching to each other, i usually mine some big rocks, and then brake them in pick-able size, only then continue mine big rocks.

On the chemical truck make the mechanism on the inside detachable so you can weld it to the ground then when you want to use it’s again just weld it back and it will solve the lagging issue

Combines IRL have different headers to do different jobs. They also have trailers to carry them that hitch to the combine. I made a saw header for my drill combine, and it's worth the 2 weld points and 1 attach point to devour trees the easy way.

Maybe you could have a bar of vertical saw blades that normally stays up and behind the cab .And when you need to chop down trees you bring the saw blades down .It may be expensive but maybe it will work

Maybe you should put 2 saws horizontally and 2 saws vertically and combine Them with some mechanism so you can trap the tree in between and push the saw blade into each other , with the tree in between! Or what just came into my mind , maybe instead of 4 saws next to each other ! You can add the 2 blade from the outside below the 2 middle saws! So you have 1 blade touching the ground while the other spins over the ground !

Your sawblades will work much better if you rotate them a little bit along the X-axis (if the x-axis is pointing forward with the vehicle). This slight camber will make it much easier for the edge of the blade to make contact with the logs.

I use two horizontal saw butt-blades on the back of the miner that chops the tree down, and then line the underside of the miner with more horizontal flat blades and mount the log with a firm but friendly manner. [edit] and drive along it.

my solution for the saw blades was to create two mandibles off the front of the car, like a beetle, and they squeeze the tree together between the blades. the mandibles are on a 3 bearing system for full control. i had to redesign my vehicle a few times after that to get dual refineries on it cuz it cuts big trees too fast for one to keep up.

I had good luck with a two horizontal and one vertical saw blade. The horizontal blades are on suspension so they are able to open up when the blade encounters a tree. Whereas the vertical blade is in a fixed spot.

You should see scrapmans vehicle, it puts the tree on a small conveyor which has saw blades at the end. Plus this is all on one vehicle.

have the saws as they are now, but add a piston and a bearing before the pipe piece that goes down, so that the pipe corner going down to the bearing can extend and rotate the saws vertically and retract. so you press a switch> piston extend>saws turn vertical>piston retract

only the edge of the saw cuts when you pushed them in the ground they didn't make contact. you also need to hold still. Trees have a lot of hit points so it takes longer. Line up once and drive slowly into the wood so you don't need to rearrange 20 times for each piece of wood.

making a saw arm, like you did with the drill originally might be better for that, at least for what you're trying to do. just need something to focus on a point to saw. or maybe, put the saws on a piston to extend and barrings to rotate them vertically when you cut the tree down to get the logs better.

Creating a good wood cutter vehicle is more complicated, as there are different types of tree to consider. For improvement suggestion, I guess making the saw blades as close to the ground at a straight position is better, rather having the saw blade positioned downward. Other suggestion is make the far left and right longer, making a V shape, hopefully the logs will get pushed to the center. Also you might want to reconsider using a lighter blocks, that sliding is very bad. I think lighter vehicle = less sliding

the logs are free floating but the rocks are stuck in the ground, so thats why you will drill easier than sawing because the trees move around

I've been experimenting with a blade array that wraps around the trunk and cuts it all up in one go. Difficult to build but super effective.

Two ideas, Create a V shape with the blades and have them spin towards the center, effectively sucking the wood in. Figure this won't create a huge difference, but it might at least help a little Otherwise, mount saw blades vertically under the vehicle but cross the orientation to avoid the wood getting aligned in the gaps, like so: --- | --- | | --- | ---

I read a comment somewhere that says when you move while cutting up the smaller tree bits, it 'resets' it's 'health' so you have to start all over. Staying still while cutting the trees might help (easier said than done) as my informal tests regarding this seems to be true but more research is needed

You need kind of a feeder for the logs.. i build a vehicle with a tire feeder. And the speed of the sawblades increases the efficency of cutting the logs.

Try having the blades horizontal and with the controller press down from above the log. That's how i have my setup and it works much better. It can still be a bit glitchy but it is a lot better.

I've actually made a great lumber vehicle. It's basically a giant U that goes around a tree that's laying on the ground after I remove the stump, then activate the line of sawblades I have on one of the arms of the U to cut down the tree into resource logs. I also have two collectors and two refiners on the back of the thing. takes about a minute to tear down one of the large trees, though the small trees don't get refined very easily 'caus of how small they are. That wouldn't work very well with your combine design though

I have 8 sawblades on the back of my miner all vertical with 2 blocks in between each with 2 off road suspensions on them so they can get the small birch trees on the ground

My setup has the blades piston out horizontally to cut down the trees and then a controller pivots them down with bearings to make them vertical to grind the fallen tree down.

When chopping the logs don't tilt the blades down but instead horizontally and when it stops chopping tilt them down on top of them instead of coming at them already on an angle.

i found angling the saws on my loggingcart the other way to work better, having the backside of the saw being lower then the front side stops you from pushing the logs forward but still grinds them up

put some barings on the side of the combine and then pipes that go up to the front with the sawblades horizontaly on a line and then hook up the controler to the baring so then u can make the sawblade thing go up 90 degrees so u can mine no problem

My wood attachment for my tractor works pretty good.. if your saw blades were 1 block lower, they'd impact better... Mine is mounted on a piston to raise for cut down and transport, then drop 2 blocks for chop up..

Haven't tried it, but would stacking two sawblades on top of each other maybe give it more surface area? The logs might not slide up on top of the blades as much.
