Just FYI, conventionally speaking, computer memory refers to the memory in RAM(random-access memory), while storage refers to drives in which data is written to for long term storage without power. RAM requires constant power and loses its data without power while storage drives such as SSDs, HDDs or even DVDs can retain data without power.

Great, informative video. Glad you were able to figure this out and help others do the same. But overall I'm disappointed by the design here by Microsoft. There is no need for it to be this complicated to upgrade storage or ram. I've upgraded these components on dozens of laptops without hassle, but even with this teardown as a guide I'm not personally comfortable attempting this fix for a family member who needs more storage for the work they do. If it was my own laptop I'd likely take the risk but for someone else who relies on their device I'd be quite hesitant to try this.

All I'm asking is why. Why would Micerosoft need to hide the screws under the rubber pads, and why the stupid plastic clips? MS could easily just put a nice looking screw next to the rubber feet, like many other computers, and use weaker clips on the deck. No one will complain about 7 visible screws if they look nice (even MacBooks have them!) and since you already have screws holding on a metal deck, the plastic clips are completely unnecessary. I guess they gotta give you a better reason to buy their more expensive models

Hi! So I just did this with my surface go laptop and now when I restarted it it’s saying “couldn’t find a bootable operating system” do you know why this may be?

I got it to work, but now I get a new problem. What does it mean if my fps starts really good and fast, then the fan starts to accelerate to a point, at that point my gps goes to 2. What do I do? Thanks.

@innoiso, Thanks for the video! I found another video from Microsoft Surface Japan which also shows how to upgrade the SSD: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2WXgIt8q8iBh7M It is in Japanese, but you can turn on closed captions and set KZbin to automatically translate it to English. By the way, I think your video may actually be more helpful to people as you demonstrate common mistakes that the Microsoft experts don't even mention.

Can you link the materials used here? I just bought a second hand SLG 1 in 128GB but wanna go 512GB

One question, before you upgrade the ssd, do you need to copy the older drive into new ssd? And how to do that? Can you just put blank ssd into the laptop? Than where is window stored?
@innoiso2 жыл бұрын
Hey sorry I meant to respond to this quicker. You can either image your SSD before you make the switch (I use Macrium Reflect which has a free trial) Or you can install windows by making an USB boot drive

Which one should I get? Surface laptop 3 or laptop go?
@innoiso3 жыл бұрын
If you want a netbook style experience, you should go with the Laptop Go, but the Laptop is probably the best for most people

Do you think it's possible to add lighting to the keyboard ? maybe a few light strips between the surface and the keyboard inner deck?
@innoiso3 жыл бұрын
That would be a huge endeavor. If I was more talented with electrical engineering I would try it. Theres probably very little space, and powering the LEDs would be difficult. I like the idea though

@@innoiso Aw, that's a bummer! I'm loving mine but my only complain is the lack of a keyboard light :/

Literally yesterday I bought another small form laptop, because I didn't find this video until today (well, KZbin recommended it to me today). I need a small form laptop, and the Surface would have been great, but with the old-ish CPU, and just 8 GB RAM, and 64GB eMMc storage...I was afraid it would be too slow for what I'd use it. Had I known the storage is upgradable, I think this is what I would have bought. Can any of you guys tell me if the RAM can be upgraded? Thank you very much!
@innoiso Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the RAM isn't upgradeable. My system still performs alright with 4GB and the upgraded SSD, but I'm doing lighter work on it

Hows the battery life after the upgrade?
@innoiso3 жыл бұрын
Still not great unfortunately. I think that's one of the weakest parts of the Surface Laptop Go, but I've been using it around home mostly so it hasn't made a huge difference

sad part is 4gb ram. 4gb extra ram will turn that little surface into a beast

The 8GB models are quite cheap now if you buy refurbished, and even my 4GB model does alright
