www.bmikarts.com/PDF/Comet_40series.pdf Attached is the installation instructions from comet industries on that 40 series unit. If you are going to run that driven clutch spring pack outboard, then the driver needs to be flipped opposite the way you have it. It will run the way you have it but unfortunately premature belt wear will follow, not to mention power loss from unnecessary drag. The way you have it the clutches engage in opposing directions. They need to engage in unison, moving the belt consistently sideways on both pulleys.
@Nun3zDanny33 ай бұрын
This. Literally every photo and video of the 40 series has it mounted wrong. Someone on an amazon review shows it with the driver pulley flipped (and the driven sitting the way these guys have it). Everyone assumes that you mount it the same as a 30 but no, you dont..

Hello Guys. Shouldn't the Driven pulley be mounted backwards so when the TC works the belt doesn't warp like it does at 16:55?

If they flip the driver it will accomplish alignment as well. If they flip the driven they'll need a clockwise wound driven spring.
@atvtheory31514 жыл бұрын
I've seen several of these go kart channels where they mount the model 40 driven clutch similar to the model 30, spring-side out. However, the model 30 is an asymmetric belt. It's designed to have the driven clutch mounted spring-side out, so it can be installed as a Torq-A-Verter single-unit replacement for the simple friction clutches. The model 40 is a symmetric belt design and the driven clutch should be mounted spring-side in. When he's running the engine and revving it up, you can see the belt twist sideways because the sheaves are moving the belt in opposite directions. The driver clutch moves the belt towards the engine as it rides higher in the sheaves. The driven clutch has the belt sliding down into the sheaves and is moving it out, away from the go kart. You may be able to get away with it in these smaller go karts, but if you move up to the big dogs, a Comet Duster or 780 clutch, you better get it right.

I was thinking that exact same thing. The unfortunate thing is that I don’t believe the bolt on kit allows for the secondary to actually be mounted correctly unless the primary can be shimmed way out from the engine. I was trying to watch videos to find out how it actually works with a symmetrical setup like the 40 and the 780.

I don't mean to sound disprespectful or rude, but... It's a go-kart. You are two grown men with an internationaly viewable web instructional... PICK IT UP and put it on the work bench. You're strong enough, I'm sure of it. You don't have to crawl around on your knees chasing a master link with a pair of pliers. Nothing bad though, as I had much much fun doing the same thing when I was younger. I fully support channels like this working on mechanical funtime projects, that's what brought me here. I like these buggies! Please do make more instructionals, I'm glad to know how one of those "torque" devices work. I appreciate it. I think I like that idea much better than the standard centrifugal one. Keep up the good work.

Not being critical but that doesn't look like a typical Torque Converter. It looks more like a transmission. It allows the pulley to change it's dimension to change speeds. A Torque Converter is a fluid coupling, more like a clutch. It allows the motor to run while standing still until you raise the RPM's. I'm not sure when the terminology changed. Great video though, great work.

These EMPLOYEES did not install 2 key components. One of the first fails was when they failed to mention, show, or install a “key”. A key is a square piece of metal that is used to help ‘mate’ the 2 round items (crank shaft and clutch) the second of many screw ups was when he put the driver clutch on the crank shaft, he did not put a specific washer with the bolt. Then he said 2 different bolt sizes in the same breath. With out the key way in, all of the torque would snap the bolt off (inside the crank shaf) ruining the motor. Please comment if I’m wrong. I’ve got a few more errors in this video as well...

Put up on jacks rev the engine and watch how the belt binds and goes crooked on the back pulley.
