that is the way i plan on going, THE LONG HORIZONTAL, i noticed that the "wild" BEES prefer a longer cavity/ natural hollow in the dead standing trees i find them in, no moer ladders, no heavy lifting, thanks for the tips

Learned a lot from your video. Thanks for talking about the gloves. I do use nitrile gloves, but like the ones you are using with the bumps to help grip items.

Not a problem! Here's a link to the glove Mike uses if you'd like the same ones. Mike's Orange Gloves: amzn.to/3mh8Sku

In your Longhive, I tried beetle traps several years but with limited success. I did a major change on a deadout and put in oil pans/trays for SHB management works great and you can see in the trays what your bees are doing. Vegetable oil gets changed once a year or as needed. SHB problem solved but you need a screened bottom. Trays stay in place all year to control ventilation and light. If you treat varroa with OAV you slide out a tray under the screen, put in an empty pan, insert the OAV between the screen and tray and treat. Slides are the plastic bars for joining lattice. Good luck....

Look into thermal mite treatment for honey hives!

That's a beautiful build, would be proud to have one of yours in our farm yard! Will you move the frames back to the Langstroth hive this fall? I can only lift one frame at a time and the Long Hive would be awesome, but our winters.... Looks forward to seeing how the bees like their gorgeos new hive!
@RascalApiary3 жыл бұрын
Nope, this is their new home! We plan on building two more of these long hives. The only draw back I'm seeing is that we're limited on the amount of frames the hive holds. We need to find out what strategy we are going to use to make sure this hive doesn't fill up too quickly. The side walls are 2 inch thick. That should be warm enough even in your winters, but I would consult the local beekeepers and see what they say.

@@RascalApiary Good point about limited room to grow, have fun brainstorming your strategy on how to go about it.

@@RascalApiary all you have to do to make more room is make it longer.
@RascalApiary3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but we’d have to build another one for that. It’s just not as easy as throwing another hive box on top like a traditional Langstroth.

Tall Cedars Tip : I have a DIY Langstroth Horizontal Hive (made from an Ex Log Storage Box !) A Dead Chest Freezer Lid (Metal Sheeting stripped and turned Silver Side Out. To reflect Weather and any Heat, no often here in Scotland.🤣) Oh and some Old Boards, as Inner Cover Boards : with x3 Inch Holes Drilled out, Plexiglass added as Viewing Ports, (so you can Peek at the Bees, on Lifting the HH Lid, see what's doing, with no Bees getting out !) 👍 And we used old Kitchen Cabinet Handles to lift these Inner Boards. And a Safety Chain, to stop Lid Flipping Out... Simple. Hive is so Heavy re Log Box, (it won't go anywhere ! 🤭 ) It's insulated with x 6 Inches of Sheep's Wool. 🐑in all the Cavity Wall spaces. (Between Log, and Inner Hive / Frame Box... ) Made using Marine Board. It also has moveable 'Divider Boards', and a Vertical Queen Excluder. Making the Left end... The Brood Area. The Right end... the Honey Super. [Back Wall is where Beek Stands, no Bees coming or going at this position.] As they come and go at the South Facing Front entrance. It has a Mesh Floor. And an external Lower Horizontal Chamber, for a Salvation 'Op Shop' Tea Tray 🤭 (As a Varroa Mite Board.) And it also stores my Smoker, Hive Tool, Rooster Wings (the best Bee Brush ever !) And dry Smoker Fuel, Clicker Lighter etc, etc ...) Their are a lot of Sheep, here in Scotland. So Wool Works well ! 🤗 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑 So when going Horizontal, "think outside the Box !" So to speak. Use what you have, Log Box, Old Cabinet on its side, even a Dead Chest Freezer... (👀see : Bush Bee Man in OZ on KZbin : He has a Freezer Hive ! 😆 Recycle, Upcycle all sorts ! Insulate with, Wood Shavings, Compressed Ferns/Moss/Dry Bark#. Anything to Hand. Also see : Phil Chandler : KZbin (UK Beekeeper.) Top-Bar HH. He likes Bark... 😉 Happy Beekeeping 2021. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
