Hi, Matt! Had a chance to get to the Leica store today and look at the sl2s. I was pretty set on a used M10, but for nearly the same price as the new sl2s, I’m almost totally set now on the sl2s. That EVF is AMAZING. I literally gasped and said oh my god out loud while the employee was standing there lol. It really needs to be seen to be believed, incredible! I really loved how big it is too, can easily see everything and it’s right in front of your eye. No squinting like many other camera models and companies

I bought an SL2-S about 3 months ago and still have my SL which I plan to sell or trade. I am currently on the road in northern Idaho in my Sprinter and often shoot from a moving vehicle, so having stabilization is definitely an improvement. I like to roll into a small town during golden hour and drive around for a while to see what I can find. The autofocus is also improved and is much more accurate. I’m 50/50 on the new button layout and the grip. My other digital cameras include an S007 and a Sigma fp. Using S lenses on the SL2-S yields excellent results which I shoot in manual focus. I’m also using Voigtlander and Leica M glass which works great with the small form factor. I’ve got the 3 SL zooms which are not getting used that much since getting the SL2-S. I’m also shooting Leica and Hasselblad 35mm and 645 film cameras, but the SL2-S is certainly an upgrade over the SL and an excellent tool to have whenever the situation demands.

Excellent comparison Matt, after using SL for three years I sold it to benefit mainly from IBIS in SL2-S when using it with M mount lenses and Leica M to SL adapter. Should have kept the SL as a backup to my SL2-S, but with SL3 not far off who cares its only money as they say. M11 is an interesting item, but after using SL cameras I could not go back to rangefinder.

I also prefer the design, the UI and the built-in GPS of the SL (Typ 601). I got mine with no white paint in the LEICA lettering, so it is also super stealthy. I as well love to use my Hasselblad H3DII-31 which has the GPS module attached so I won’t give up that convenience anymore. Maybe a Leica SL3 with the 60MP sensor of the M11 and a built-in GPS unit will be a nice upgrade in the future...

Although I used the SL2 and it’s lens family for some time, I have recently gone back to the M. The M11 to be exact with a couple of APO Summicron’s (50 and 90) plus the new EVF. Awesome and not at all ‘tank-like’.

After Leica ditched the APS-C CL range (I also have a TL2), I decided to "bite the bullet" and buy a new SL2-S with the Leica F&F promotion, ending in October last. A big weight difference, but a superb camera nonetheless. A pity my TL lenses, bought for the CL and TL2, along with a couple of DC Sigmas, are APS-C and can't make full use of FF, but all the other M-mount and M42/LTM lenses work really well on the SL2-S.

I work with this camera and also worked with the SL. The SL2s is a ver versatile camera. I hope we get some Firmware update In the future. The M system feels differently. And you can shoot film/digital with the same set up. The SL got me with the shutter noise. Once you hear that it’s very satisfying. But I noticed that there a more some situations where I tend to hide the camera. Thanxs for the nice content you create and for the refreshing way your putting it out. 🔥

My friend bought one and returned it. It wasn’t performing better than his Sigma FP in high iso. He bought the FP-L and the EVF-11 instead and has been raving about it since. Leica is good.. But sometimes the alternatives like Voightländer and Sigma is just better or equally good for a fraction of the price.

I have an FP. The main problem is the lack of viewfinder and the EVF-11 is £600 😭 I’ve had a Leica Q and an M8, currently own an M240 and a CL (plus the FP). Got the CL inspired by Matt, but not loving it so far. Going through my images randomly, most of the ones I love most were shot with the FP. It just has a creamy but detailed look about it. The FPL might be overkill - too many pixels. My faves overall are the M240 and FP.

Thanks for this video! Have you noticed that the Leica SL2-S works better than the SL 601 with M and R lenses (image rendering)? The Leica SL2 and SL2-S would, according to Leica, have a sensor optimized for M and R objectives (microlenses). A comparison between the SL2-S and the Panasonic S5 and S1 would be super interesting (image rendering with manual optics: Leica R, Leica M, Vintages, Voigtländer...)!

The SL my favorite camera. It's controls are simple, has many advanced features and is very capable in video. The L mount opens the door to use not just practically every Leica lens ever made, but also modern Panasonic, Sigma and third party lens makers as well as vintage lenses in M42 mount, K mount, Nikon F…the list goes on and on. The big negative is its size and weight. For that I use the TL2. I'm not interested in the mega file size of the SL2 and although I like the idea of IBIS in the SL2-S it just isn't enough for me to upgrade. I am a little excited about Sigma news yesterday about their full frame FOVEON X3 1:1:1 sensor now "assembled, tuned and usable" and meant for a new L mount camera though!

SL2S ISO performance from 1600 - 6400 blows away the crappy issues like with banding of the SL. iBIS and ISO performance make it TOTALLY worth the upgrade dude.

I purchased a Leica SL2S two weeks ago and I should first say that the last time I purchased a high end digital camera was when the Nikon D700 was released in 2008 ish. I had that camera for a year and then sold it to switch back to film and bought into the Leica M system. My next serious digital purchase was a Leica MD 262 in 2016 which I still have. So what made me buy an SL2S ? 24 megapixels sits nicely alongside my MD 262 which is 24 megapixels and is plenty enough for 99% of photographers. The low light capability, although I’ve never needed more than iso 1600 at night if shooting with a fast f1.4 lens. Ultimately the main reason for purchasing an SL2S was to pair it with Leicas M to L adapter and open up the possibility of M lenses on a body with weather sealing, a rear screen, no rangefinder calibration and the amazing EVF that the camera has. My only other digital camera that I own is an original Nikon V1 with 28mm equivalent lens and that has always been set to show B&W through the viewfinder. As odd as this may seem. Owning the amazing Nikon V1 and the EVF experience with that camera was the final tipping point that made me decide to get an SL2S and open up my collection of M lenses for use on a modern camera. In fact I have no intention of buying any L mount autofocus lenses because M lenses give me everything that I need, be it on film M’s, my MD 262 or an SL2S. Good luck with whatever you decide, be it upgrade or not. You already have the best parts in your SL I think and that’s the ability to use M mount lenses and the wonderful viewfinder.

I love my SL - the only change that I would make is to be able to magnify the viewfinder image without pressing the joystick button. I have the M240 and use this with the Visolflex and in the menu there is an item called Focus Assist - when focussing the image automatically goes to full magnification. THis can be turned off or on - wish the SL allowed this. Other than that - best camera I have ever used!

the SL 601 sensor has a very unique look. almost reminds of a cross between m240 and m10 with just as good noise performance as the M10. 601 is a bargain too, considering it can be had for around the same price as the Sony a7iii in todays used market

The SL2-S offers several improvements over the SL: BSI sensor, IBIS, more secure handgrip, better EVF, better high ISO performance, etc.

I can quite understand your reasons for sticking with the SL as, for your type of photography, the SL2-S offers few advantages. I have never used the SL, but I have had my SL2-S for over a year now and I absolutely love it. For low light, the SL2-S with its IBIS and great high ISO performance is hard to beat. The IBIS in particular is astounding. I also find the eye detect autofocus very reliable for portrait work. I also prefer the design of the SL2-S, but that is a purely subjective matter. I would like built-in GPS but I believe one can link to a phone for this (correct me if I am wrong), though I have never tried that.

That said, the 90mm APO-Summicron SL is an outstanding lens for portraiture and its weight is not so much a problem in the studio. For outdoors, I rather like the look of the new line of DG DN Sigma lenses: I have the 65 mm and it is well built and very sharp.

The SL2-S certainly has a [relatively] attractive price, particularly considering that the Q2 is more expensive (though admittedly has more megapixels, too). Still, a Nikon Z6II has a better overall sensor and the new Nikkor Z lenses are spectacular performers, and for less money...but if you want a Leica ILC, this definitely seems like the way to go.

I switched from M10 to SL2-S with M lenses. The shutter on the SL2 and the feel of the shutter release feels so much more immediate. I havent been out on the streets lately, but I have no problem using the SL2-S over the M10 for street photos. If I were using the L lenses, i might be a bit more apprehensive. The reason I switched is due to us having our first child end of last year. I wanted critical focus and exposure that the M10 just couldn't guarantee with the OVF. The live view on the M10 is very clunky to use IMO. The SL2-S EVF is amazing. I have also been shooting a bit of video in C4K and the results are amazing. The second also... =) being able to photograph my sleeping child in a nearly dark room at ISO 12500 and get not only useable, but really good results is totally worth it.

Hi Matt - good luck with the decision whether to upgrade. You certainly know how to get the most out of Leica equipment. One thing I have noticed is that a decision not to upgrade can change when firmware upgrades happen. Nikon trailed Canonand Sony in the eye tracking autofocus really badly but a surprise firmware upgrade made it suddenly work and its now competitive with them. Anyway I digress - I eventually gave up on the dlux 7 that I discussed with you - just could not get focus at all - have bought a Nikon and now everything is pin sharp - I think maybe I got a dud. Anyway you were kind enough to help me with triggers and flash questions so I will remain a follower - maybe I come back to Leica. One day :D

Hi Matt, I look forward to your videos on all things Leica and beyond. I think really for you it does make sense to keep the SL as you said the IBIS is something you don't use and you use fast lenses in daylight or with some lighting. Having shot with both cameras, I can definitely say that the SL2s is better in many ways. The auto focusing is better, the lowlight performance is fantastic and the whole thing feels snappier to me. I also like the IBIS. part of the problem with any quick review is that you can't really use the camera in all the conditions and on different shoots to fully see the differences . I am looking forward to you 50mm APO versus Voigtlander review. Thanks.

Testing cameras in low light etc and the more modern camera benefits usually start to shine through. I have a few new videos I need to share then yes i'll get back to to the APO vs APO shoot out :)

Z6 is amazing all around and the best deal in the market for all around function and performance. That said, it does not offer the unique image quality of the SL and SL2S, if you’re just interested in stills.

I upgraded to SL2S from SL for its much better AFC and high speed FPS. Yes, when using M lens, there is not much difference. But SL2S allow me shooting sports with L lens. So I can get rid of my canon system.

Hi Matt I would have thought the SL2 having close to double the megapixels would be a far more worthwhile upgrade for your model and street photography Either way at this point I would expect the SL3 with at least 60 megapixels to be announced sooner than later (as soon as the excitement over the M11 has begun to drop) and the price of SL2 & SL2s cameras will drop substantially You’re SL has bottomed out and will retain most of its intrinsic value into the future All the very best Ron

Hi Ron, thanks! Yes agree I think SL cameras will not drop too much more in value and are a great professional workhorse camera. (Tougher than Ms for knocks etc). Less MP means less skin editing so 24MP can be OK too. (When I use digital Hasselblad H3D-31 photos needed a lot more editing as so much detail).

OMG Matt. You need to sleep on this I think you should reconsider. I have the Sl2S. Mostly use M lenses. The image stabilization alone is worth the upgrade. I also. Would totally love it if you do more street and environmental photography. I want come to London and do photo walk with one of your courses. Ps just bought Zeiss 50 1.5. ..And it is stunning & inspirational paired with with Leica SL2s

Perhaps what is missing in your review is the comparison in the autofocus area. I know that you love manual lenses so it's not probably your main concern but it could help some people. I don't think the SL is a beast on this topic (perhaps linked to panasonic technology who was never so good in this area too vs Sony or Fuji) but is the SL2-S better ? For this amount of money we could expect a quick , sharp and with efficient eye detection. Is it the case ?

Hi Phil, yes sorry I overlooked AF as a MF shooter. Yes others have confirmed that the SL2-S is a big upgrade when it comes to AF (vs SL).

Hi Maciej! Yes it was strange I felt like a celebrity that day, people kept saying hello to me haha :) Yes the SL price is really good now. I didn't notice IBIS benefits of the SL2-S (no difference image wise), I just shoot digital the same as film and within the cameras abilities so portraits 1/60 minimum ideally and then I never need IBIS.

Thanks very kind! I didn't, i've used it before (see SL2 video) and at the time the photos looked similar to the SL photos (without pixcl peeping). My computer is already full without the extra MP sensor but it could be useful if need to crop heavily for say a wedding shot (but I try to crop in camera).

It is a sensible upgrade considering that modern Micro 4/3 cameras out-perform the old SL in pretty much every metric. The SL2-S actually performs better in low light than the A7S III, which may come as a surprise to many. But the Sony does have higher frame rates. Having said that, if you like manual focus vintage lenses, including medium format lenses, and you prefer wider than longer lenses, then the SL makes perfect sense.

I recently did a natural light portrait shoot with my Panasonic G9 and S5, and was surprised at the quality of the G9's images, even compared with the S5. I used the Olympus 25 and 45 f1.2 primes which are really darn good, and under many circumstances I'd happily use the G9 for client work. If m43 beats the SL for image quality, that would take the edge off my desire for an original SL.

Second this. I used the SL2-S in 50000 iso and it blew the A7siii. The a7siii can shoot even darker at higher iso but for usable 50000iso, the sl2s is matched by panasonic s5, if not better

Hi Gino, i've never noticed too much difference with colours vs the M240. I need to picel peep to be sure and I will do M vs SL when I get time. Yes ISO in M240 is as you write. Base 200 but I still use 100 too.

Anyone have any thoughts on adapting Zeiss ZE lenses on the SL or SL2? I recently caught the Leica bug again. Had a bunch of Rs and Ms in the 80s and 90s, sold to pay child support. I've been using Canon and all Zeiss manual focus ZE lenses with EF mount. Bought a Q recently, and I'm off in the weeds. I'm trying to figure if I can expect better IQ from a SL2 and my adapted EF Zeiss lenses (with Maetro processor and no low-pass filter), than a R5 and that adapter. Obviously I'm not concerned with AF speed. I have a Canon R and enjoy the focus peaking on the lenses and I have 2 EF lenses with AF that I also adapt. I also have a couple of RF f4 zoom lenses for travel. I believe Id keep an R or R5 around just for that ecosystem.

Because even if the camera has IBIS if the model moves you still get a blurry photo. I've never really used it for photography (most of my cameras dont have the option* but you certainly dont need it).

Main differences to me are all in the SL column. Button ergonomic design, build is milled aluminum bock, gps is built in, and above all sensors files are more pleasing. SL is better…

Thanks TW. Yes I laughed at them too when they came out. A guy was buying one as hid main camera and I said why don't you get a proper Leica. Yearly later I got older and slightly wiser and now I use it 95% of the time. Brilliant camera and not as heavy as they look body only. Viewfinder is a dream. I still use M for street but otherwise the SL is a far better workhouse.
