Great info but the best part of this video was the gorgeous scenery and the riding. I could watch an hour of that. Thanks Neil.

The flipside of having compliant wheels is that when they twist under force, they will also snap back violently when the energy is released, as seen in a few clips in this video. This can make your bike (and especially the rear) seem skittish and wallowy. Stiff carbon wheels are more precise and more predictable and will not have the same tendency to throw the wheel around.

@nootnoot1463 Жыл бұрын
This is not true. How a wheel returns to its unstressed state is mostly about how the wheel is weighted by the rider. The force the wheel returns to normal will depend on how energy absorbing the material and construction is and generally a more compliant wheel will do so with less force than a stiff one.

@@nootnoot1463 Nah, wrong on all accounts. Carbon fiber has a higher damping factor than aluminium. Simple facts.

Spoke tension and type has the most effect on compliance in wheels
@Notyourslave69
@Notyourslave69 Жыл бұрын
Spoke gauge, tension, flange diameter and rim material and construction all play into how a wheel reacts under load. I prefer to use a good quality carbon rim with quality double butted spokes and proper tension. The carbon rim makes for a very responsive feeling wheel without the harshness of alloy spokes.

Not a friend of carbon frames and handlebars but in a wheelset carbon makes sense in my opinion because it doesn't bend easily.

Neil can you do a video sorting the back brake cable routing on your torque like your Spectral, or even Anna or Blake's. Wondering how easy or difficult it will be or even the best way to feed it through to make it neat. Thanks for all the amazing content btw 😁🤟

I run Carbon rims on a carbon frame. I must say some bike parks do feel very harsh to my hands. Next year I'm getting a bike with alu rims, interested to see how that feels.

You should test different wheelset with the same bike to really measure how the change feels.

This is a commercial- it's how the Don feeds his kids- so let's all say 'Good Show' and move on. 1. NEVER buy 'trendy' stylish wheels- stick with the easily repairable ones made with reputable components that can be built/serviced/ and re-built by yourself or any quality bike shop. 2. Hub 'engagement points' is an overhyped topic. If you build on something as iron anvil simple as an 18t. DT Swiss 'Hugi' hub, you are unlikely to miss the extra engagement of something like a 'Chris King', but you will definitely appreciate the DIY maintenance and lube it facilitates. When it comes down to it, most 'hub hype' is BS; once you're into sealed cartridge bearings not made in China (or worse) and companies with a genuine spare parts department, you're good. 3. Rims; again- avoid the hype; Don't be the first to try what's new, and buy quality over flash. 4. Spokes and Nipples; any spoke type or style or they don't stock in a local shop is an invitation to stupidity (see; Mavic), and 'proprietary' means 'expensive obsolescence' in real English. 5. Compliance vs. Rigidity; compliance is what you have suspension for, and flex in a wheel is what leads to fatigue and breakage. Avoid the buzzword BS and ride longer and more often for less money. If the blokes on GMBN ever get that hard up, we can take up a collection. Merry Christmas!

I run Berd wheels on my Scott Genius. $2100. Ouch. Best, most noticable upgrade I have ever done. Hard to explain how the bike changed. Stiffer but springier? Smoother? It was something I noticed immediately. If these wheels do not fit my next bike I will buy another set of Berds. Ouch.

I can’t stand flex in my wheels, I hate the feeling of it flexing under me. I prefer it being nice and stiff, also transfers power from pumping way better. But I also run my tires pretty solid with dh casing and dh inner tubes

You're right; 'compliance' is just BS marketing for companies with bad wheels.

@@floydblandston108 Because there's no such thing as companies taking any feedback from racers and XC and road riders I'm sure. All marketing and zero feedback for product R&D. Also zero competition between carbon and alloy wheel makers. I'm sure.

Forge+Bond carbon wheels evidently claim to have more compliance than standard epoxy carbon wheels, in that they use polymer bonding instead. I have no personal experience but thought I'd mention that in the carbon world, there claims to be a broader compliance than typical stiff.

why do you need compliance for full sus bikes? why not just experiment with rebound and compression settings? and try to mkae your legs stronger?

Wheels and tyres are a form of suspension in them self's they also hold the frame in place so any flex or compliance built in will effect the ride and feel of the bike and don't be fooled by the hype the best way to alter compliance in the wheel is spoke tension
