I've had this 01 Cabrio for about 4 years, and it has needed a convertible top forever now. But I've never had any idea as to how it went together. I searched all over the internet for years, and came up empty handed. Your video is the first to explain how to do this. I'll be ordering my new top in a week or 2 to get it done. @@dubworldvwadventures I sold the car before I ever got around to it. I was crushed while unloading a trailer last year in Texas, and didn't have a choice but to sell it off. I sent the new owner your video and I can only hope he gets that done.

my 01 didn't have a window with a frame like this. I got a cheap top from Ebay that didn't come with instructions. I followed this and just didn't put the window back in. I'm probably going to make an attempt with the window later.

Like these a LOT better than the older ones (like the bugs) that have the cable that pulls the top into the metal channel on the body of the car. Where you need to tighten the cables from the inside next to rear seat.

Would using some soapy water in the channel help to push the piping (@8:00) through the rear channel? Being exposed to the weather for any amount of time would wash the soap away, if you are worried about soap residue.

Never use soapy water Inc dish washing detergent. They contain salts which may attack the metal work. We always use silicone spray lube. The channel is not subject to water to wash soap away.

@@chortlemk1 You can't use silicone universally. If the car is going to be repainted, silicone products causes fish-eyes in the paint. Using wax and grease remover doesn't always work to remove excess silicone, and since a convertible is a mechanism that can frequently be used - the operation of the mechanism will tend to cause the fabric of the top (and the silicone in the channel) to spread on the paint. I've been in paint shops where they actually forbid ANY silicone sprays, semi-liquid or solid lubricants from entering their buildings, including silicone waxes. Yes, you would normally want to replace the top after the paint, but fresh paint is easily damaged, so some shops elect top do the top first and then the paint. Soapy water washes away, silicone doesn't. You can argue about which detergent to use and it's effects, but usually that is a better option than silicone.

Not so. The tray the top slides into is buried down into the car it has no baring on the paintwork. And if you’re painting a car then the top and tray should be lifted up and out of the way of the car body. Plus there’s a rubber seal that sits between any of the body and the tray. Indeed when These are replaced factory wise there are 2 Steel blocks the tray/rail actually bolt to and to the mounting holes to make the install easier. A spray sillicone with straw is more than adequate and accurate enough. I’ve fitted loads of tops using the VW method having trained in Germany where they use sillicone spray. And if you’re getting fish eyes etc in Your paint that’s down to poor preparation and not your top fitting.

I found it much easier to clean the four side rubbers well, lube with wd40 and simply slide them into place. No worries about wrecking them this way. Just be careful to place towels under the areas the wd 40 might drip on like your seats etc.

Be careful about the location of the rear sides. They have to be able to go up to the edge of the rear window opening at the bottom. You have to rivet the material here so this can happen so this requires some stretching on each side so the material slides forward in the groove enough to accomplish this. It’s not enough to merely center the top on the aluminum stick! Also tough to see how to place the water deflector in this video, says to screw it in but this wasn’t shown. Just installed mine and this is what I found.
