When I worked at Citroën and my father asked me the same question, I told him to go for the four cylinder diesel. It has enough grunt for the kind of motoring that you will do in a C6, but gets better mileage. Of course it was manual, but who wants to drive a C6 in town or on small roads? Get on a motorway, put in top gear and forget the lever. The V6 petrol power was only to reach a slightly higher top speed. But at top speed, the C6 suspension gets slightly floaty, when someone gets in your way in the fast lane (been there, done that, and got a new t-shirt afterwards). The V6 diesel was of course beefier than the 2.2, but it needed much more gravy.
@UPnDOWN
@UPnDOWN 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say the C6 was floaty at speed at all. It's one of the most composed cars I've ever driven at high speeds in! 2.2HDI undoubtedly more sensible, but I'm not convinced the C6 doesn't need a V6's smoothness to complete the character of it.
@thomasalbrecht5914
@thomasalbrecht5914 2 жыл бұрын
@@UPnDOWN I agree it’s composed at what ranks as “high speeds” currently. It is excellent up to the top speed of the 2.2, and slightly beyond. I was talking 150 mph. I had the pleasure of introducing the car to the German press, and that involved making sure that the press cars in my fleet went up to top speed on the unlimited German autobahn. The V6 petrol cars went to 240 km/h. But while they certainly kept safe at those speeds, they couldn’t completely match the stability of certain rivals that were really designed with the German autobahn as prime preoccupation. When you went beyond 230, you noticed that the steering was a bit too light and the suspension control wasn’t too happy with emergency braking on uneven surfaces. You can say with good reason that this isn’t even what you should do with your car since it’s dangerous to provoke that kind of situation, but sometimes you just take too much confidence, especially with a car that up to that moment appeared so serene. At least I can say that the car did gave warning signs, and that probably if your intention wasn’t trying out top speed, you’d lift the foot anyway.
@bruceleigh3988

I would have to say that my 2.2 always feels smooth and fast enough... Haven't ever had it up to autobahn speeds so can't comment on that but I do feel that the 2.2 is the one to have! 😀

In Finland the annual road tax is €862,50 (£743,50) for the 2.7 HDI and €460,70 (£397,15) for 2.9 petrol. The fuel tax is ~30% lower for diesel -that's why higher road tax for diesel cars. However, the diesel prices have been 10...25 cent/liter higher then petrol at the pump over the last ½ year. And yes, the people have been crying about this the whole time. On the main car sales website there is 6 HDI's and one 2.9 petrol for sale. HDI prices starting from 5k€, but the petrol one is a low mileage (68k) at 25k€.

Nice interesting back to back comparison Rich with no surprises. I find after many years of driving behind turbo diesels I would always miss the effortless characteristics of the torque that turbo diesel provides, probably well used to the sound differences as well so if I was ever wavering towards a big engine petrol car this test doesn't change my thinking. Im tempted by a C6, and scan the market occasionally. not sure if I would ultimately make the move though. Thanks for the entertainment😋

The DT20 is particularly rare in PSA's passenger vehicles in the UK. On AutoTrader right now, there are three C5s... that's it, nothing else. The 407 Coupé received about 60, so either most are gone (unlikely) or people just don't want to sell them. Also, if I recall correctly, the DT20 was lumbered with the same gearbox as the DT17... so power is up, but torque only increases by 10 N⋅m.
@UPnDOWN
@UPnDOWN 2 жыл бұрын
The gearbox was slightly improved (and uses different fluid) but overall is largely the same box, yes. There are very few around and when they do pop up, they're huge money - to me, they're not close to being worth the premium as they are very similar cars overall.

@@UPnDOWN Trust me, the 3.0 HDi is worth every penny. :-) I always tell my clients if they are happy with their 2.7, don't test drive a 3.0 HDi because the difference is huge. Especially how it works together with the gearbox. It makes a huge difference! Otherwise I agree very much with your conclusions. And the 2.2 HDi with manual gearbox is actually a favourite for me, you should try one!

It apparently took a video of almost 43 minutes to draw a conclusion. For me, the dark interior is the clear winner. Not only that it is much easier on the eyes, but it also sounded much more mature and less screamy. Of course, an interior is also about the materials used and how they feel and smell and how sustainable the whole is. So there are still some open questions, but not to the extent that it could undermine my conclusion, I expect.

@@UPnDOWN It is generally known that a dark interior absorbs high-pitched screaming sounds better. Seeing your test route(s) - I noted Taylor’s Garage in Droxford, then the turn onto the B2150; plus the humps near the Horse & Jockey in your drive of the Bleu Delta CX - you’re not far from my home in Sarisbury and my back roads route to Horndean, I wish I’d brought you my (immaculate 100,000-mile) 3.0HDi to drive as a comparison. You really would retract those ‘it probably isn’t too much different to drive’ words within 60 seconds of the off! It’s a completely different C6 experience: quicker, gruntier, quieter, more refined, more reliable, tauter; just soooo much better. And half the VED. It’s truly the car that the C6 should always have been. I had two 2.7 Exclusives; then I bought the 3.0. I was enthralled and even more delighted! I sold the 2.7s tout de suite!! My 3.0 has gone to a good home in Gloucestershire now. I had it for almost six years, and it never gave a moment’s trouble. Unlike the 2.7s… Ten years of C6s, doing all my own fettling; I’ve “done my time”. Love your channel, your anecdotes and delivery, Rich! The reason the petrol feels old school is you have to rev it high up the rev range to move. The diesel has a lot more mid range shove which is more what we're used to these days. The best option for this car is the 3.0i Petrol. The crankshafts on both the 2.7 and the 3.0 Diesels suffer from oil shortage because the oil pumps fail and the whole engine is completely destroyed. The crankshafts on those cannot be repaired. Typically they last about 100,000-150 000km and then after this,they die.

2006...the obvious choice when buying a C6 would be the 2.7 diesel. Power, torque, fuel consumption. It's 2023 on the street. C6 becomes a classic car. Diesels have tarnished their reputation in general, plus there are questions about the reliability of the 2.7 engine. And here the obvious choice is the 3.0 gasoline engine. Simple and reliable. This opinion is confirmed by the market prices for the C6 with gasoline and diesel engines. There is also the rarity factor of the gasoline engine on this car.
@UPnDOWN

Yup, can't argue with any of that. The diesel works better as a package even today. It's faster and more economical, but the petrol is the better ownership proposition in 2023 (or 2024, nearly!) I expect the petrol values to skyrocket.

It wasn't just the UK, it was most of Europe where diesel sales reigned supreme. On the face of it, they made more sense, too; Better economy, better range, more grunt and lower Co2. They were like a big petrol engine in a smaller, more efficient turbocharged package. For driving long-distances, the diesel C6 is just better at it. Course, now we've all realised that Nitrogen Oxide is a thing, plus have been bent over a barrel for a long time at the pumps, and then combine that with the added complexity that it took to make diesels work much better than petrols now at the point it's all starting to fail, and the petrol now looks to be the right choice after all (though in honesty, an electric C6 would be the best one!)

I've just realised, being surprised at your attitude to the claimed engine size of the 3 litre, that there are two ways of reading those round number specs. I've always read them in terms of maximum engine capacity for racing formulae: so, a 3 litre is an engine designed for a formula specifying a maximum capacity of 3,000 cc. Which means the actual capacity will be something like 2,900 to 2,999 cc, depending on the engineers' confidence in the accuracy of their production, and of the scrutineers' measurement. You, on the other hand, are reading it like an advertisement or label, as for instance if you got a 3 litre container of orange juice (other beverages are available), you'd be rightfully miffed if it only contained 2,900 cc. Neither's right or wrong; I think it used to be the case that manufacturers typically described engines in the racing formula way (which maybe also has taxation implications in some jurisdictions), but maybe that's changing.

There’s the direct comparison and the value comparison. The V6 petrols seem quite a bit more expensive now, with a better engine reliability reputation. The V6 diesels are much cheaper but have that terrible engine reliability reputation. The derv will have the torque that does things in a more relaxed way. As someone above mentioned, the 2.2 four pot diesel might be a good compromise of price and reliability, if you can live with the comparatively meagre performance. The character of the C6 always struck me as being rather laidback and suited to easygoing motoring, not slow, but sedate! Thats the word sedate. An unruffled cross country pace sort of sedate. And the C6 seems like the last of the luxury executive saloons from an “ordinary manufacturer”! And the sales probably explain why! 😢 Those road tax prices won’t help the survival rate between now and its 25th anniversary when road tax will become free. A reduction in road tax for 15-25 year old cars would be nice (sort of a modern classic reduction!), but highly unlikely! I’d love one, but the petrol purchase price and the diesel maintenance costs plus the road tax are a killer for me at the moment. I just hope enough survive past that 25 year point for me to reconsider it before I have to hang up my driving gloves (metaphorically speaking rather than literally). The only problem is prices will have gone the way of the XM and CX by then! 😢
@valentinexristov8915
@valentinexristov8915 8 ай бұрын
If you cannot afford it now, you probably will not be able to do so in about 5-10years. Prices are going up almost day by day. 300,000km examples (petrol) go for 10-15k Euro in Germany and Netherlands. So definetely expensive purchase and for the future as well. The 2.2 is reliable, but you dont have the AMVAR option which makes the C6 special. Otherwise, the 3.0i V6 and the 2.2HDi are both slow and not very fast. But being honest, 2.7 and 3.0HDi are not sports car either. They just got the torque.

Diesels and Petrols of that era, and if of the same capacity, cannot be directly compared because of the simple fact that one is turbocharged and the other isn't. Furthermore, diesels at that time were the result of much bigger push in development than the petrol counterparts. If you leveled the plain field by slapping a modern turbo and the electronics to go with it, than the diesel would be sniffing it's fumes.
