This video is part 1 of my story of the Upper Dolpo Trek which I undertook in the far west of Nepal. The video shows the journey from down on the Indian border upto the remote village of Saldang in Upper Dolpo, the story of the trek continues in part 2.
The Dolpo region is adjacent to the Tibetan Plateau and many of its people came across from this Tibetan region. Although it is now being visited by tourists, Upper Dolpo has maintained its natural beauty. This makes it an essential destination for trekkers who admire the value of the unspoilt beauty of this area. The Upper Dolpo Trek is in a restricted area that was only opened for tourism in 1989. It belongs to the Shey Phoksundo National Park. The Upper Dolpo trek goes above 4000 meters in many places with three 5000m passes to ascend and go over. This area still maintains many of the Tibetan influences and the Tibetan culture.
The Upper Dolpo trail starts by leaving a small airstrip at Juphal and passes through many settlements and villages. In the early stages of the trek you see views of the pine forests and winding mountain rivers. In the distance you will see the high snow-capped mountains, which hide the mighty Kang La pass. Be mesmerised by the blue colour of Shey Phoksundo Lake, which lies at 3600 meters above sea level. The Kang - La Pass connects the Phoksundo valley and Shey Gompa. The Kang - La Pass is the highest point of the Upper Dolpo trek where you may see the beautiful mountains and landscapes. The Upper Dolpo trek passes the monastery at Shey Gompa where you can rest and see spectacular views of crystal mountain.
Leaving Shey Gompa you then have to ascend another 5000m pass over the Sela La which is not quite a challenge as the Kang La. Once over you are then into the true area of Upper Dolpo in Saldang.

Great to see another Nepal trekking video from you Ross - pt1 and 2. Looks a like an incredible trek so thanks for sharing the video and images - really inspirational. I finally managed to do the Manaslu trek in 2022, and back again in March this year to do Langtang and Gosainkund. Not sure I'll get to do one as remote as this, but outstanding scenery, culture and real sense of being off the beaten track from what you shared.

@@rosstetlowadventures9751 the remoteness appeals to me, I watched your Manaslu trek during lockdown, was hoping to go for my 50th but ended up Motorcycling instead!! After watching this, it's wet my whistle again, not visited since 2019, used Mountain Ram Adventures, based in Kathmandu, did you source your own guide? Or did you get a referral? Hired a porter and guide for the Mrs and myself last time, for me it was much better than going with a UK based company with too many HnS restrictions.
