Thanks for showing us your project, I want to do the same thing on a slightly different bike, but my controller box is very small, I doubt I can get a more powerful controller to go inside. I hate the controller box being at the base of the battery, obviously there have to be holes for the cables to go in, but that means water gets in too. Thats maybe not a problem for you down under but I am in the UK! Already had to replace the controller due to muddy water damage.

@@joc1862 do you think it would work to move a rear hub motor to the front wheel, after removing the cassette holder and sawing down the axle, because I want to upgrade my 500 to 750 like you and will have spare controller and motor left over. @@utubeape Not quite sure what you mean. Do you want a motor in each wheel? If so, it can be done but it's messy - 2 motors, 2 controllers, 2 throttles or better, I throttle linked to both controllers - what about pedal assist? Do you have enough room on the bike?
@utubeape
@utubeape Жыл бұрын
@@joc1862 thanks for the reply, I already have a fat tire ebike but want to improve it, the rear has the 500w motor, its controller is under the battery which is behind a seat post. To upgrade the back motor to a 750 I need to fit a new controller anyway to somehere else on the bike, I have room. I want 2 throttles so I can only use the additional front motor when needed, because it will have a smaller battery., maybe 10 Ah. Already got pedal assist mounted. I just wondered if you have ever tried to fit a rear wheel motor onto a front wheel, having taken off the cassette and sawing down the threaded bar / axle
@joc1862
@joc1862 Жыл бұрын
@@utubeape No, haven't tried that. Cutting up the motor would be a messy job. You would need to check the position of the bearings on the cassette side to see if the altered motor would fit between the front dropouts. Also torque arms would be required for the front forks. I'd sell the 500w motor and controller and put the money towards a ready-made 500w front wheel fat tire kit and buy a bigger controller for the 750.

Hope you respond.Did you ever think of just adding a front hub motor--I have a 20 inch CSC coming and was thinking of just adding another motor similiar to how a grizzly is--and another battery.They got 1000 watt front hub motor kits that are reasonable and have excellent reviews and the few folks that have done this have ebikes that literally fly up the steepest hills with little to no effort.I mean the motors are probably using maybe 40% of their power if that--so everything should last longer--plus a 1000 watt alone can climb hills--added to my 750==I just want something that can go offroad and have the range to go 40 miles plus on throttle only if need be.
@joc1862
@joc1862 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I had thought of that. Problem with that for me was that the bike would get too heavy with the extra motor and battery - and I have no space on it, especially if I ran dual controllers as well. The other thing was that I wanted to get at least a bit of excercise while riding the thing. As it is, the 750w (geared hub) with a beefier controller climbs hills easily, with little effort on my part. I didn't want another motorbike as I already have one of those. Also, with so much gear on the bike, it's more conspicuous if you ride on main roads and more likely to be stopped by traffic police for illegal riding. As in my case, I've got to ride on main roads for a couple of ks to get to an offroad park....Once there though - great!

@@khronin Check the type of 750w hub motor you're getting. If it's geared, you'll get lots of torque for hill climbing and lower top speed. If it's direct drive, you get less hill climbing ability but higher speed on flat roads. You would probably need a 1500w hub motor (which gets heavy) if you want to climb hills with a direct drive. Depends where you ride. For offroad, torque is probably best.

@@joc1862 It is geared hub bafang and that it is a real bafang 750 so it has 1000 watts or so for uphill. I do not need the ability yet--but I plan on going up to helen GA after the summer to take it on some more difficult trails--i should have a good feeling if it can handle it by then.I was going to get a grizzly but did not want a moped style fixed seat ebike--i have a 20 inch BMX and have ordered a comfort seat because I do plan on peddling.I gave up moutainbiking a few years ago because i llive near 2 hills to get to my house--not big ones--just long and it was miserable to have to deal with them after being worn out from biking.I am more worried about the trail riding in a few months--it takes a lot more energy to ride on trails then pavement.

You will need to put a larger controller to see benefit from the new motor. Motors will behave the same as controller will send same amps to each. The lager magnet is battery strength. Meaning it will handle heat better (heat build up slows the motor and can burn it out). I’m not an electrical engineer but I guess there is a larger capacity overall. Still the motor should only respond to the power being sent to it by the controller. 25amp is good but new motor can handle 35amps (short time be for heat builds) best at 30amps. Let me know if theory plays to practice as I am going to do this to my RadMini but with Bolton Bikes (check his upgrade on UTube) tutorial and motor 750watt/controller 35amp/color monitor- upgrade sell. Also see ERI Denver ant Electricbike both on line (USA). Good video it helps in respects thanks!

I just did the swap on my Rad rover 5, first run out lasted about 14 miles before battery cut out and for some reason the motor was really freaking hot. Too hot I think. @joc1862
@joc1862 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm... you need to check your controller to see if there is spare wiring coming out of it that is not being used (a 3 wire connector with black, red, green or white wires). If so, that is the usual throttle wiring that the manufacturer may not have used (because a throttle can be road illegal) and an aftermarkek throttle may be added to it. If not, the controller may be specifically designed for your bike without a throttle connection. If you can live without a display, most cheap Chinese controllers (of the right V and ah) will come with throttle connection, but you need to get a compatible throttle with it. Matching things up with an odd controller (display, throttle, PAS) can be a problem. Stick to your pedal assist - I personally prefer it to the throttle and your battery lasts much longer.

@joc1862

Hmmm... The 750W motor I used was the Bafang geared motor and it will run on various voltages - but that is determined by your controller. It is generally used with a 48v battery system and the controller will cut power to the motor if the voltage gets below about 40v, to protect the battery (lithium). With an appropriate controller, it will run on that voltage - but very poorly. It will lack power since you're feeding it with 240W, which defeats the purpose of using a 750W motor.
