Not only could you UNDERSTAND every word, she had flow, great narrative, and a comprehensive story that sent a solid message. This is not only hip hop. This is ART AND POETRY at its finest. Love MC LYTE.

Yup. That's what I miss the most. The storytelling, flow along with the beat all working together as a complete whole. I don't like doing the old person era comparison thing but one of the things that bugs me about modern rap/hip hop is the beat does far too much of the heavy lifting.

Why do you think black women started to do that ? It's because black men started were glorifying other races of women with the straighter hair and lighter skin. Black women felt this is what they had to do to get attention. Don't forget Whoopi Goldberg was ridiculed by the NAACP for wearing her hair natural.

This song is so amazing for so many reasons. Obviously the use of the original song’s meaning. The two depictions of a man; the player everyone feels as though they know and the man that has just as many issues as anyone else. Maybe even more. The story telling of this record always makes me second guess my writing skills. Breaking down multiple perspectives as well as maintaining her own. Topics that people still discuss today. The beat itself tells the same story with the ins and outs/samples. Captivating if you claim a love for story telling. More importantly creativity. This one record alone puts MC Lyte in my top 3 rappers male or female of all time. Much Love ❤️

Used to own the cassette tape back when I was in high school in Rabun County, Georgia, and listened to it over and over again. She was (and still is) one of my favourite rappers. But my 1st time ever to see the video! It also brings back memories of participating in campaigns against drunk driving in high school and university as part of organisations like SADD and SOAR. Sadly, here in Chiang Mai, Thailand , where I am now, drunk driving is an even worse problem, both for teenagers and adults of all ages, as compared to back then in the U.S., because here there is NO public transport late at night when people are going home from bars and clubs, and most people have a motorcycle rather than a car and go to bars and clubs alone or in twosomes, which makes a "designated driver" not an option. Also, more people, as compared to the U.S., drink hard liquor like whiskey. Far more people here have died of road accidents, as compared to COVID, yet a National Emergency was declared for the latter, but almost nothing is done about drunk driving and other bad driving and road accidents, including very little police enforcement of driving rules.

I'm from the Old School and sure, I loved MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Nikki D, Roxanne Shante, Foxy Brown, Queen Bee, Remy Ma, Sparky D etc. But this is a new era and new style. Not everyone is going to "get" how good the late 80s and 90s hip hop was. Now I'm sure alot of today's "hip hop" artists acknowledge their predecessors and I too miss the lyricism, turntablism, original beats but SOME of today's artists are imo actually pretty good. I appreciate Cardi B because she realizes and appreciates her Bronx roots. I definitely appreciate her hustle and drive and energy.
